Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Holland was released 45 years ago today.

I would love for there to be a good sized book written about this album. Between Brian ditching the actual country of Holland sessions, to how the individual songs came about, a travelogue of what Carl and the gang did in their time off in Holland, how the new members (Blondie and Rickie) fit into the band, Van Dyke saving the album with SOS, etc. Heck, maybe this can turn into Bill Pohlad’s Love and Mercy II I’ll be sure to play this album today. I've been thinking about writing that book for years. It’s a shame that Jack Rieley passed on a few years back. He would probably be the best source for that story. I came as close as being his friend on Facebook, but he was already in and out of the hospital in those days. He had such a profound influence on the Beach Boys.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Q: best historical analysis of Good Vibrations?
|

Dear people,
I'm currently obsessed with Good Vibrations. I'm listening to every session en reading every snippet of information about this big cultural achievement. There's of course a lof of ground to cover (PSS and TSS boxsets, various dvd's and books), but they all seem to focus on a small portion of the GV-timeline. I want more.
Is there a complete overview of the recording proces of GV? What's the best book on this subject? I really like c-man's website and sessiongraphy in TSS-book, that's my favourite source of information for GV

Hate to say this again:
According to my distribution system Made In Califonria is still released in January
BUT
There's also a Beach Boys 50 Live dvd and blu-ray that's coming november 16. I believe that was the original release date for the boxset. So there's still some stocking filler this year

I just downloaded the first version from sendspace and I'm loving it! It's great that you can just insert a disc. I had a Daniel Johnston in my cd-drive and it started playing! Funny stuff!
Project Smile was heaven, this is going to be hardcore heaven!

Take the intro of Amusement Parks U.S.A., I have never heard the percussion and organmelody on the mono mix. The stereo mix takes the song to a new level. And when I listen to the mono mix now, I DO hear those parts.
It's funny you say that, because the instrumental track sounds pretty 'locked' in mono in the center. I know, I know. But the new stereo version just gives so much space that I'm hearing new things for the first time. For instance, the bridge of Wonderful. I never heard or paid attention to Mike's line, in the stereo version it's very clear. Things like that I can now also hear when listening to the old mix. I'm not implying that the mono mix is any different now, if that's what you thought.

Just listened to the Smiley Smile Stereo cd, anybody else have issues with the piano in With Me Tonight? Seems like it misses a few bars...
Splendid sound and a whole new way of listening to one of the weirdest and greatest records of all time.
Wowee... cheers for this! Well, my first two lines were a complaint, but yes....it's cheerful news! Lot's of details on SS that are totally new to my ears, but have been there all time!

Really, really, really awful
Weird delays, weird reverb, sound everywhere, too much autotune, terrible new lyrics
'Isn't it time, isn't it time, isn't it time to be lovers?' instead of the original rhyming line WTF? Making the single less catchy?
The album version had so much potential and they ruined it. I hope this will be a hit, but it doesn't deserve it, to be honest

Isn't Bertus a wholesaler?
Yes. Sorry, I said it before in the Remasters-thread. But this is the system Dutch shops use to order cd's. The price can be anything between 90-100 euro's, with taxes.
