126  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Fun, Fun, Fun Backing Track Session. on: March 26, 2015, 12:57:39 AM
I was playing around with a channel separator in Audacity and I discovered something! The basic track for Fun, Fun,Fun was actually recorded in Mono only during Takes 1-2. Take 3 was actually recorded on two tracks of the Multi-Track tape and the final track of the Three-Track contains the Overdub track of more guitars, more bass, saxes and Hal's drums. So on the first Track you only have Brian on Piano and Carl on Guitar, you can even hear the other instruments in the background. The Second Track has Al on Bass, Ray on Bass, Dennis on Drums,Hal on Tambourine, Jay on Sax and Steve on Sax. I mean what a creative way to record from mono on one track and decide to switch to two tracks instead. Brian still amazes me!

Here are the tracks

Brian Wilson once again, blowing minds! Pet Sounds in 1966, Smile would have to in 1967 and then Love You in 1977! Now it's 2015 and he's doing it once more! It would be bizarre to hear this on today's hit radio knowing it's him from way back when! It better hit the charts and knock off all the untalented pop music!

Yes we need one! I mean there are sources such as:  http://www.beachboysarchives.com/
http://fridaynightboys300.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/the-beach-boys-1964-keep-eye-on-summer.html
http://recordingsunflower.blogspot.com/  The 15 Big Ones Sessionography is right on the back of the LP of the album and in the album booklet for the CD version and some of the ESQ issues contain Craig Slowinski's Sessionography for All Summer Long and the Christmas Album. Craig said that he is also in the middle of working on a Made In California Boxset Sessionography as well and this summer issue of ESQ will have full Sessionography for Summer Days! I would love to see an all album source book as well!
130  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do You Wanna Dance live 2015 with Dennis on: February 13, 2015, 01:34:58 PM
Two notes about this:

1st Note: This is the first time in a long time that Do You Wanna Dance? is played in it's original recorded key, I didn't know that they could all sing that high still wow! I remember that when it was played on the 50th anniversary tours, the key was dropped down to suite Brian's voice.

2nd Note: Dennis voice is actually taken from the original recording, so it's the 1965 vocal track of Dennis. Now what makes me wonder is if Dennis sang the lead by himself and the boys Overdubbed their background vocals or are all the voices recorded onto one track? I'm trying to go back to Craig's Today! sessionography and make sense of it. If they are all on the same track, then that means not only is Dennis in the chorus so is Brian, Marilyn, Carl, Al and 1965 Mike singing with the live band. Maybe they somehow isolated Dennis only?
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The Little Deuce Coupe Album on: February 04, 2015, 10:56:29 PM
Has anyone figured who played on the new tracks from the Little Deuce Coupe album from 1963, such as No Go Show Boat or Spirit of America? Was it just the boys or did any studio musicians contribute instruments?
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Missing All Summer Long tapes? on: January 30, 2015, 02:11:48 PM
I was reading the issue of ESQ with All Summer Long and I really liked the sessionography by Craig. I noticed that some of the songs are multiple bounces for tapes, however some of these bounced tapes have never been heard before such as the separated background vocals for Hushabye or any sessions for the tracking of Wendy or Little Honda. What happened, did these tapes disappear or were they taped over? At least we some of the tapes and we have the final 3-track masters.
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I need help identifying some Brian Wilson boots on: January 25, 2015, 06:29:52 AM
That's a 12 String Acoustic Guitar that Carl is playing. Could it be the one used for recording "Then I Kissed Her"? It would of been cool to hear the boys playing during this photo, but we will never know!

Brand New Stereo Mixes of Fun, Fun, Fun, Warmth of The Sun, Do It Again and Country Air on the 2013 Made In California Boxset.

New Stereo Mixes of Why Do Fools Fall In Love and Pom Pom Play Girl on the Keeping An Eye on Summer The 1964 Sessions digital release.

A great compilation but, I wish that we would have gotten Don't Worry Baby and The Warmth of the Sun as Acapella mixes and some session highlights from This Car of Mine!
136  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Can Surfin' Safari ever appear in Stereo? on: January 10, 2015, 06:06:00 AM
So we know that the Surfin U.S.A Album and on can be all Stereo. What about the Surfin' Safari album? What Session Masters are missing? We have the backing track sessions and Overdub Sessions for Summertime Blues,  Heads I Win Tails I Lose has just Overdub Sessions for Vocals, We have almost all the Tracking Sessions for Little Girl (Your My Miss America) except the vocals sessions, we have the master takes for the Cuckoo Clock and County Fair Backing Tracks as well as the 2nd Vocal and instrument Overdub Sessions for those two songs, but that's it. I heard a while back that Surfin' is actually a Two-Track Master, with Vocals on one side and the instruments on the other side, so that one would work. We also have the odd ball Extraction mix of 409 that works surprisingly well! I know that Surfin' Safari either was only Mono or the tape was lost in time so it would need an extraction mix. Are there any tapes that haven't appeared on the SOTs set that exist? Or do we have to have extraction mixes of Ten Little Indians, Chug a Lug, Moon Dawg and the Shift?  So maybe Craig, Andrew, Alan or Mark or some other experts can weigh in on this topic!

I was just wondering! Anyway what a great set and release! I hope we get a 65 release as well! Thanks Alan and Mark for the hard work and effort put into it, it was worth the wait!
138  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Christmas (Beach Boys Related) on: December 25, 2014, 11:26:38 PM
I got Pet Sounds on Vinyl, Two of the Mono and Stereo Remasters: Surfer Girl and All Summer Long and oh yeah, Jon Stebbin's FAQ book on the Beach Boys. I can't seem to put it down to stop reading it, it's very cool!

So, since Man With All The Toys, Santa's Beard, Merry Christmas Baby, Christmas Day, We'll Run Away, Do You Remember, Carl's Big Chance and Drive In weren't on the Keep an Eye On Summer 1964 release, are they out of copyright or is there another compilation that will gather up those songs?

Thanks for the post but the YouTube police have blocked it in the U.S.
141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ever given another BB album the SMiLE treatment? on: December 18, 2014, 06:55:35 AM
I have never done that, but it gives me an idea! Shut Down Vol. 2! Now that we have some acapellas, takes and using some audio channel isolation we can make an interesting mix ala SMILE. Smiley
142  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: “The Warmth of The Sun” Multi-tracks on: December 14, 2014, 10:16:20 PM
The Multi-tracks for Fun, Fun,Fun were also noted to be on that tape or from the same session. They were also considered lost too. When the new stereo mixes for both tracks showed up on MIC, it was surreal! When I heard the stereo mixes, my thoughts were ok, now we have to hear the backing track in full stereo, because the Hawthorne, California mix was mono only.

I love all of the session highlights and New Backing Track Mixes. I still wonder though, where are the tracking sessions for Wendy and Little Honda? I mean, I love how they are presented on the set but, I would love to hear highlights from these sessions some day! Are they missing from the vault, I would love to hear them!
144  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 14 Beach Boys albums coming to vinyl/SACD on: December 04, 2014, 01:19:48 PM
Rhonda and Good Vibrations are using the Digital Extractions, however there is no mention of 409, A Young Man Is Gone or I Get Around being Extractions mixes? Maybe it's a typo or they found more tapes?
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Oh, Carol...I know. (!!!!???) on: December 01, 2014, 08:03:31 PM
What I want to know is, who is the jerk that liked her post?  Embarrassed
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The We'll Run Away Appreciation Thread on: November 25, 2014, 04:56:48 PM
So who played on the Basic Track and the Instrumental Insert? On the basic tracking I hear: Brian on the Piano, Carl on Acoustic 12 String Guitar and maybe Dennis on drums? On the Instrumental Insert I hear Carl doubling the 12 String Acoustic Guitar and Brian on the organ, which I believe is a Hammond? It sounds like the same organ used on Wendy and Don't Back Down, as all three songs were recorded at the same session? Maybe C-Man can shed some light on this. No, I don't have a subscription to Endless Summer Quarterly for the All Summer Long issue, to see the credits for the song.
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Let's Live Before We Die on: November 15, 2014, 04:09:26 PM
What is the story behind this song? It sounds like it was recorded in 1964 because, the people playing improvise a little Carl's Big Chance during the sessions. I can hear Brian on Piano, Carl on guitar, Hal on Drums and some unidentified players.
148  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Interesting Ebay find on: October 02, 2014, 11:21:49 PM

Does anyone know what this was? Is it a bootleg or a disc compiled for someone who has been in the vaults?

I was looking at the highest bidder and it says y***s which translates to "yours" Was this bidder Mark, because I know he has Yourplace or Mine studios. Just curious about the name.
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Good Bye Surfin Hello God! on: September 28, 2014, 12:29:54 AM
I was looking at the old vigotone bootleg website and the information has a blurb  from some very famous mixers! Well, read on!
Goodbye Surfing, Hello God!:
The Beach Boys In Session, On Television, And In Concert -- 1963-1972

Once upon a time, it seemed an impossible dream (to quote that Man Of La Mancha classic), to actually to session tapes of groups such as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.  It was nigh-on unfathomable for the average fan, and was the sole domain of a select team of musicians, producers and engineers who had actually been present at the sessions themselves. Occasionally, a tantalizing bit of poor-to-average quality tape of one of these tracking or vocal overdub sessions would sneak out, but in general, fans would simply have to make do with the official releases and wonder how these magical bits of musical brilliance had been constructed.  This, of course, is the way the artists involved would have preferred it to be; who would be interested in the rough ideas, half-finished concepts or alternative visions for the songs that had constructed their careers?  There was a reason that these items had never been issued: the best takes or mixes were the ones selected for release.  Lock up the multi-track session tapes and mixdown tapes as well, they dictated, and let the official recorded canon stand on its own merits.

Thankfully, in the case of the Beach Boys, the last decade has unleashed a plethora of unissued material as a result of archival and cataloging projects dating back over twenty years.  While working on these projects, renegade engineers were kind enough to dub copious numbers of tape copies from the masters and (in their own special ways) made them available for all to hear.  While the Beatles and the Stones have certainly had a substantial amount of rough tapes exit the vaults in a similar fashion, the sheer quantity of unissued recordings from the cousins, friends and brothers is truly awe-inspiring.  Not to mention, frankly mind-numbing at times; how many screwed-up takes of "Christmas Day" can any human bear to hear?

However, true Beach Boys fans are a stalwart bunch.  No matter how many of these tapes have already seen the light of day (particularly thanks to the good folks at the Sea Of Tunes label and their fine series of CD box sets), these same enthusiasts will be happy to know that there is even more to be heard.  There are more session tapes and mixing sessions, great live (and semi-live) television appearances, more 'in concert' material from their prime live performance era of the 60's and early 70's, and plenty of other odds and sods.  This is the reason for the box you hold in your hands now.  Vigotone is proud to offer to the grizzled, yet indefatigable Beach Boys veterans Goodbye Surfing, Hello God!, a collection of previously unissued session tapes, unreleased alternative mixes, and  uncirculated-to-date live performances, all in the same exemplary quality one has come to expect from these earlier releases.  Sit back, enjoy, study, and get up every so often to use the facilities; Brian would want it that way.

Mark Boyd Elliot

February 2001

Now the question that remains is, is really Mark Linett, Alan Boyd and Brad Elliot saying this, because I thought they were against bootlegs?

Thanks for clearing that up C-man, as for the link not working I don't know why it doesn't as it was created yesterday.
