Embarrassingly all-American? Maybe. Musically incompetent? Not a chance in hell.

Pills Probably fairly early. Once read he had to pop a tranquilizer to pass his drivers test
Pot late 1964
LSD early spring 1965
Cocaine some say late 1967 I would put it at more like late 1968. Carl once stated he didn't realize Brian had a real problem with it until the So Tough sessions.
Herion Probably 1973-74
As far as when he last did it who knows. I assume no herion or cocaine since 1983 but with Landy who the hell can tell. LSD I doubt he did after the sixties though I do think he did it more then three times. Pills probably stopped doing the wrong ones after Landy As far as pot perhaps he still does it once in a while.

I'd lean toward late 1967 for the cocaine, judging by comments from Danny Hutton. Brian's voice changed from Wild Honey to Friends, as well. which is a symptom of cocaine (ab)use.

I think it's "I got so flustered", not "I got some mustard".

Yeah, you're right, it is "I got so flustered", Curtis!  Whoops!

Hey Curtis, what do you think of Brian Wilson's version of "Drip Drop"?

It's alright. Brian's enthusiasm is really freaky though, and he sounds coked out.
105  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Catbirdman's List: Questions, Answers, Speculation on: April 28, 2011, 02:28:51 PM
There we go, Secret Smile, yeah, thanks doods! Tracks 18, 19, 20 (stereo).

Tripped on a cornucopia
Stripped the stalk green and I hope ya
like me the most of all
my favorite vegetable.

I tried to kick the ball but my tennie flew right off
I'm red as a beet 'cause I got some mustard.

I also just listened to a boot I forgot I had called "The Beach Boys & Paul McCartney - Vegetables" (NMR004 Nowhereman Records),
39 tracks of Vegetables sessions.

I think it's "I got so flustered", not "I got some mustard".

Don't want to get off track here, but has anyone here heard the version of Vegetables that has the "Cornucopia" lyrics in it? I wonder if it will be released. I can't remember if it's been booted or not - would someone point me in the right direction if it indeed exists?

Sorry for the dumb question - I'm allowed one, right?

That version IIRC circulated widely on the internet back in, oh, 2001-ish? For a while I don't think it appeared on a physical bootleg, but I think it eventually did, on Archeology. Just going by memory here, and the memory cheats. A few different sources of this piece were also on the "Secret SMiLE" title that circulated widely (to my chagrin) back in 2004.

Yes, Archeology and Secret Smile both have them. It was also used in the wonderful, wonderful Smile mix by pancakerecords.

5.   Wonderful with lead vocal and yodeling bvs     (OKAY, I'M CONFUSED, DON'T WE HAVE THIS ALREADY?)

No. We have a couple of rough vocal takes from Carl and a demo vocal from Brian. No yodeling BVs, either.

The backing track of Brian's 1966 version w/yodeling BV's is definitely out there and has been booted many times.

Sorry, misread the BV's bit.

Did Brian have a hand in the lyrics to this version? It sounds like a lot of the verses could've applied to him circa 1972.
110  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian on stage in the early 70s on: April 25, 2011, 08:30:25 PM
The sound quality is absolutely dreadful.

The version I found on Google.

It's a very poor quality audience tape. You can barely hear any of the Beach Boys, much less Brian.
111  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If Smile had been released back in 1967... on: April 20, 2011, 11:45:35 AM
I wrote an alternate history once on this issue.  It's still bouncing around the internet somewhere.

My feeling was that if SMiLE had come out in 1967, it would have been a big hit.  Different..perhaps, but a fully realized production.  The surfer/endless summer fans would have dropped off, just like the Beatles lost a lot of their original 1964 Beatlemania fans (like my Mom, for instance) with Sergeant Pepper, but they would have found a whole host of new ones.  More importantly, the Beach Boys would have played Monterey, and their songs would have been played on FM radio, and they would have stayed relevant.

I also think that SMiLE would have been the last such ambitious work...though Wild Honey would have been a lot better and a lot more produced.  I also speculated that BW would still have had a mental breakdown (you can't keep away mental illness forever), which would have compromised Wild Honey a bit, but it would also have caused the group to begin taking a more active role in songwriting and production.  The only difference would be that the turmoil would ensue with a band still at its peak, rather than on a downward slope.

Basically, I had the group putting out a double album in 1968, touring in 1969, and then releasing one last great album (Landlocked) in 1970 before breaking up.   I took it all the way to 1981, and I guess you'll have to find it and read it to see the rest.

If it's not this, I'll eat my hat.
112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Classic Rock Outtakes Industry:where do we go from here? on: April 19, 2011, 12:38:00 PM
The upcoming Queen reissues have raided the vaults, and I gather the Floyd are contemplating an archive project. That aside, I'm thinking the remaining legendary tracks are the 24-minute "Helter Skelter" (yawn...) and Macca's "Carnival of Light", which I'm most reliably informed is absolute bollocks. Oh, and maybe before he dies, Dave Clark will authorise the DVD/BluRay release of the RSG ! material he owns.

That said the 10 minute version of "Revolution 1" which surfaced quite recently is bloody great.

I'm still hoping for some kind of Pink Floyd out-take collection, which if Nick Mason is to be believed, might actually happen. And I think those connected with Pink Floyd missed a big oppotunity by not including "Vegetable Man", and "Scream Thy Last Scream" on the recent Syd Barrett best of, or the PATGOD reissue from a while back.
Because those two songs are actually from sessions for the group's 2nd album.

Unreleased post-"Emily" single, actually.

Really? The mind boggles to think that either of those two tracks could ever have been even considered as a potential single.

Remember, none of the members of Pink Floyd besides Barrett were tested songwriters at that time. It's very possible that they were ready to take whatever material his rapidly deteriorating mind would give them.

On another note, Barrett was apparently crushed when Vegetable Man got rejected for A Saucerful of Secrets.
113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If Smile had been released back in 1967... on: April 19, 2011, 12:30:13 PM
We probably wouldn't have gotten Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl and the Passions, Holland, or Love You. With Brian still dominating the band, Carl and Dennis wouldn't have been so eager to step up as songwriters. It depends on how stressful the SMiLE sessions would've been on Brian's health had it been finished, though.

Perhaps the best thing to do with this record is keep it sealed and sell it on Ebay when you get tired of storing it. Playing it doesn't seem to be the best option for this instant collectible. Cheesy

I bought it for listening. It's not like you can get a new vinyl of Good Vibrations or Heroes and Villains for that price.
115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: CAPITOL/EMI TO RELEASE \ on: April 17, 2011, 07:15:38 PM
I caved in and bought one after seeing a copy at my local record store for 11.99. Ah, well. I've always wanted Good Vibrations on vinyl.

Love Ya sounds a lot like 15 Big Ones/Love You Brian.

EDIT: The demo for Night Blooming Jasmine on the BW '88 remaster sounds like a smoother version of the LY/15BO voice, too.

Yeah, it counts. 1982 and on is really where it gets difficult (though I suppose there are probably some 70's leads that would make a fan confused...)

Then it's probably the closest he's ever come to sounding like pre '74 Brian. He does the same style of falsetto in the acapella bridge to Love and Mercy too, albeit slightly buried in the mix.
120  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: April 10, 2011, 12:01:37 AM
On BWPS Surf's Up, is it Brian doing the falsetto "a children's song", or Jeffrey Foskett? I've heard people say both.

It doesn't sound like anyone's backing up Brian during that part. And it sounds a lot like his Imagination era falsetto.
121  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When Brian's Singing Sounds Like Brian on: April 09, 2011, 05:03:26 PM
The hard part is, 60's Brian almost always sang in head voice/falsetto. Mid 70's and on Brian almost always sang in modal - save for BV's. But, uh, I'd put up Orange Crate Art as an example. Cry too. He goes into falsetto just before the tag to Surf's Up too. And the 90s live versions of Caroline, No also count. But all in all, he really doesn't sound anything like he did in the 60s. It's understandable. Years of drug use, several packs a day, plus possible brain damage due to the medication Landy was feeding him made his phrasing near completely different than what it was (although it's been getting better since Imagination)

EDIT: Does Getcha Back count at all, or is it too soon?

Facts are where I start from, not where I stop.  Grin

Which brings me to something I just noticed... the wording on the plaques is a bit odd, isn't it ?

"Studio & engineering by..."

"Thanks also, The Beach Boys ! (Especially Brian)"

This is just a feeling, a hunch if you like... but maybe we should be looking outside North America ?

You're saying that this tape collection/fake was made during the Beach Boys' Dutch holiday?
123  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Mystery on: April 05, 2011, 08:42:29 PM
A better question would be how they/he/it got the tapes in the first place. It's not like the Boys handed out session tapes willy nilly to everyone who asks, and the plaque makes me think that this Paul Bramsen had to have at least worked with the Boys on one thing or another. Maybe asking Brian/Mike/Al/Bruce themselves (and showing them the picture) would be the best option.
124  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A couple of American Spring questions... on: April 03, 2011, 10:44:40 AM
"It's Like Heaven" is another really Brian production, too, that acts as a precursor to Love You.

Not really a precursor, "It's Like Heaven" was recorded around 1977 or '78 during the short lived Am Spring revival.

Not particularly, but at least it's not made for Vegas. A bit boring, though.
