Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is the most devasting moment in the band's career?

Releasing Smiley Smile easily. That it wasn't Smile and is just too weird an album that sounds nothing like their previous output alienated a massive portion of the fanbase and doomed them commerically and critically. I really don't know what Brian was thinking with smiley smile releasing inferior versions of several basically completed songs like that version of wonderful instead of the smile version maybe he really was trying to spite his bandmates....

I wonder how different The Beach Boys legacy would be if they'd been allowed to release just 1 album a year which is still far more productive than any group you see today. They'd receive great deal more critical acclaim I think, in my opinion more people would have them up alongside The Beatles and The Rolling Stones on the strength of these individual albums. Assuming a double album of 20 tracks this is what they would look like.
Beach Boys '63
1. Surfin' Safari 2. Surfin' 3. 409 4. Surfin' USA 5. Farmer's Daughter 6. Lonely Sea 7. Shut Down 8. Lana 9. Back Home 10. Surf City 11. Surfer Girl 12. Catch A Wave 13. The Surfer Moon 14. Little Deuce Coupe 15. In My Room 16. Hawaii 17. Your Summer Dream 18. Be True To Your School 19. Thank Him 20. Spirit of America
Beach Boys '64
1. Fun, Fun, Fun 2. Don't Worry Baby 3. In the Parkin' Lot 4. The Warmth of the Sun 5. Why Do Fools Fall In Love 6. Keep an Eye on Summer 7. Dead Man's Curve 8. I Do 9. I Get Around 10. All Summer Long 11. Hushabye 12. Little Honda 13. We'll Run Away 14. Wendy 15. Do You Remember 16. Girls on the Beach 17. Drive In 18. Don't Back Down 19. Merry Christmas Baby (Different lyrics) 20. Christmas Day (Different lyrics)

I've thought of combining That's Why God Made the Radio and No Pier Pressure.
The album would be called Summer's Gone.
Side A (Youth transitioning to Old Age/ Optimism)
1. Think About the Days 2. That's Why God Made The Radio 3. The Right Time 4. Saturday Night 5. Guess You Had To be There 6. Strange World 7. Isn't It Time 8. Sail Away
Side B (Old Age/ Regret)
9. This Beautiful Day 10. Whatever Happened 11. I'm Feeling Sad 12. Tell Me Why 13. The Last Song 14. From There to Back Again 15. Pacific Coast Highway 16. Summer's Gone

He spends a lot of the review saying how he doesn't like Runaway Dancer and not only that but being second it somehow messes up the rest of the album . Just because you don't like one song doesn't mean it suddenly becomes a 3* album. Think Abbey Road and Maxwell's Silver Hammer or Land of Dreams by Randy Newman and Masterman and Baby J those are just dreadful songs but it doesn't stop them being great records. I happen to love Runaway Dancer it's a far better song than either of them although it was definitely a grower. I also feel there is tendency to underrate albums by older artists to try and make it seem the stuff on the radio isn't total crap compared to that of the 60's. I'd give NPP from what i've heard so far a solid 4/5

So far I'd go for:
1. Guess You Had to Be There 2. Saturday Night 3. The Right Time 4. Sail Away 5. Runaway Dancer 6. Our Special Love
I've liked every single one so far, I can't wait for The Last Song to be released which I think everyone knows is supposed to be the best song on the record.

I believe strongly like our american friends that no one should be born into a position of power the royal family stands for everything i am against.
The royal family hardly has any real power. They're just pampered to the extreme and cause everyone's taxes to sky rocket. In reality, the power lies within parliament. I do realise this even if they are powerless the idea of having an unelected official being the only person that can sign bills into law is against my political philosophy. The royal family are an anachronism in modern society we have no use for them and should become a republic.

I can forgive people liking the royals because it makes them feel more british or whatever even though i disagree them. The people lining the streets at thatchers funerals however they are either ignorant or have no heart.

There is something wrong with this country that so many people are fawning over the birth of a royal baby who is going to experience luxury that many of fawning public could only dream of. There is something disturbing about celebrating the birth of a child whose ancestors were adept at stealing money and land from our ancestors. Why there are people camped outside the hospital i don't know. I believe strongly like our american friends that no one should be born into a position of power the royal family stands for everything i am against.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson a Sam Cooke fan?
|

Those who know music still appreciates the tremendous contribution Sam Cooke did to music until his life was cut short by his own personal failings. If Dennis was a huge fan of Sam he certainly didn't learn from the recklessness of Sam's behaviour. Did they ever find out what happened at that motel with Sam and the woman?
The way i understand is that Sam Cooke brought a hooker back to the motel who then robbed him. Sam Cooke then confronted the manager wearing nothing more than a shoe and sports coat demanding to know where the woman had gone. Then Sam Cooke supposedly grabbed her and they fall to the floor then the manager picked up the gun and shot him.

Hi Mr Desper not a question about your wonderful sound engineering work but I was wondering seeing as you engineered the American Spring album, what you know about the mysterious Floyd Tucker who was the writer of Awake. After failing to find any info about him what so ever leads to me believe he is either a one hit wonder someone that Brian, Marilyn or Dianne just happened to know who'd written a song or whether its a pseudonym like Reggie Dunbar (Murry Wilson).

I don't think there has to be a particularly Brian-centric reason that album connected with him as it did. It's a simply devastating piece of work, bitterly hilarious in parts but so deeply humane. It's not hard to imagine an artist of Brian's caliber being floored by it. I don't think the meaning of the lyrics to "Sail Away" was much of a secret, and I think knowing it only adds to the song's beauty since its so emblematic of Newman's style, which is to dig deep into the minds and souls of the characters who are usually considered beyond empathy. I have wondered about the extent of its influence on Brian. Consider that he got deeply into the album in 73 - right? - directly before his voice started changing. Really makes me wonder how much his singing style on 15BO and BBLY must have been an intentional imitation of Randy Newman, especially in light of how pure a tone he was able to achieve on M.I.U. just a year later. Just imagine the last line of "Roller Skating Child" that Brian delivers in Randy Newman's voice, and it literally makes more sense. Just a thought.
Very intriguing call! I will ponder it for quite some time and then try to come up with an answer... you certainly raise some interesting possibilities... Never heard that theory before interesting. Has anyone ever asked Brian about it?

Why do you think it affected Brian so much, so much that it stopped him from "sliding into further depression"? Obviously he'd have found songs like Political Science very funny but personally I think its due to the songs God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind) seeing as he was in a somewhat existential crisis at the time as evidenced by the song Til I Die wondering why so much suffering occurs and the song Old Man which i imagine would have touched very Brian deeply given his relationship with Murry.
