51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Getting One's Friends Into The Beach Boys on: August 07, 2010, 03:26:26 PM
I gave up.

The Beach Boys have a "Fun, fun, fun, Surf, Rhonda" Image you just can't break. Their further interest is below zero.

My girlfriend though I played the BWPS live DVD, now she's in it too.

always remember, these are kids with little experience, a garage band. If you compare it with Phil Spector at that time, he had professional musicians that created his "wall of sound" For a first album it's good with some classic tracks, but of course compared with what to come...

4 points.

I think it's problem is, it's between Today and Pet Sounds, two outstanding albums of the Boys and if I compare with these, I only have to give 4 point, otherwise it would be unfair. Still it's a very, very good album with many classics

It's the best pre-Pet Sounds Album, actually everything is already said to this masterpiece. I remember the first time I heard it, it blew me away...

I gave it a 4 with a fat extra point.

It's one of my favorite, I really love the titel track and Wendy

5 Points, it's just the best.

Starts so optimistic, in the middle full of love and in the end so sad.

You can now pre-order the album on iTunes with a bonus track - "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off"
...

What does Brian sing about? The 50th Anniversary?
58  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Speculating about 'Run James, Run' on: August 04, 2010, 03:41:32 AM
Does anyone know if Run James, Run was a request from the James Bond production company or did Brian just try to sell it to them? All I know is “They turned it down” (quote from Pet Sounds Live DVD)

If RJR would have been on a 007 movie it could only have been You Only Live Twice
Thunderball had it's premiere on 12/09/65 and RJR was recorded only 3 weeks earlier on 11/17/65

Maybe I should run Pet Sounds over an action scene from that movie and see what would have been....

Dear Mr Desper,

I'm a new board member and I'm thrilled to have found this thread with your marvelous insights of a time that, in hindsight, must have been most exciting. I guess The Beach Boys were anything but dull in the late Sixties and early Seventies.
I made an internship in a recording studio in 1982 (it was the time of analog 24 track recordings) in Germany , so I have only little insight myself and some of your described techniques are still in my memories.
I guess you're still editing your book, can't wait until you post the long awaited message: "Book revision is finished!"
Sorry, no question from me this time (reading all these posts makes me speechless with admiration), just wanted to say "thanks" for your time spending on this board

best wishes
