Great 31 min interview. The look a little tired.

2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Frankie Valli or Brian Wilson - who had the better falsetto? on: March 02, 2011, 01:41:46 PM
I am really fascinated by Brian's early voice and was wondering if he isnt just using his head voice in the song "Barbie"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JO-dQh1WsU

One thing Ive noticed is that his voice is not doubled as it was done in later more well known Beach Boy songs. To me that might be the difference.

In other words, even though Brian is singing in his head voice its when his voice has been doubled that it sounds more airy and a falsetto.

I agree with what you are saying up to a point. My only contention is this. If the drummers tempo is not consistent then the whole song will not sound right as it is being played live.  True Ive seen the audience (people in the bar) dancing away because they were too drunk to stop and say, " Hey this sounds like crap"!!!
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was Dennis a good drummer? on: February 24, 2011, 01:59:35 PM
Well, we don't always get what we want!

Music is an organic experience played by humans. If you're in a bad mood it will affect how you play, just as being in a good mood will!

Look at Money by Pink Floyd: when it comes back from all the solos/breakdowns it's about twice as fast as they started it, but who's complaining? Listen to the various live takes of the song floating around, and the meter is more consistent? Therefore, why the hell did they keep and issue a take for the album that went up in meter? Because it feels great and kicks ass, that's why!

I guess Im biased because Ive been playing the drums since 1982. When I play live I try to keep the tempo consistent because its the audience that is paying me to play music that will help them get away from their problems for a couple of hours and for me to let my mood affect my playing wouldnt be professional.

When Ive gone to see a band play live I want to hear the song as it was recorded that is the drummer plays consistently in his tempo.

I don't often use such rudimentary terms to describe my disdain for any specific musician, but Neil Peart friggin' sucks. Yes, I know he's a technical wizard. Yes, I know he has about two dozen different drums in his setup. His playing is boring as friggin' hell.

Testify!!!!  Cool

I have to disagree here. I think Neil Peart is one of the most exciting drummers I have ever seen live in concert. Other favorite drummers of mine include Ringo, Bill Bruford, any of Zappa's drummers from about 1973 on, Bonham, Moon, etc. And I enjoy DW's performances on the Long Beach '81 and Seattle '83 shows.

Least favorite drummers? How about Tommy Lee from Motley Crue and Lars Ulrich from Metallica?

Funny, Tommy always reminds me of Dennis, not only because of the simple playing, more than that Tommy has a great heart too and is like Denny the crowd favourite and even when he talks he sounds a bit like him.  I think Lars Urlich was great in the eighties, when I first listened to albums like Master of Puppets or And Justice For All I thought he might be the best. Nowadays he does not deliver that passion and sound anymore.

I think the mentioned Long Beach and Hawaii performances in the early eighties really rule. BTW This is the only time I saw Dennis playing drums on Help Me Rhonda after the mid-seventies.  Dennis IS rock and roll. In my perfect rock band he would be in with Bon Scott providing vocals, Keith Richards playing guitar and Cliff Burton bass. They are all not the best (with the exception of the latter maybe ) but they really show the passion and so stand for rock and roll.

My second favourite drummer would be Eric Carr.

Peter Chris and Eric Carr are two of the greats as well!

Peter Chris is a great example of a flashy guy with tons of drums but who still played loose and swung and played with a lot of heart and knew damn well when to simplify!

Peter Criss couldnt play in time. The live stuff is horrible.

I was just going to add that Mike Love is starting to look like (in the face) Bruce Johnston.

BTW @ Matt Jardine, Im friends with Surfer Spud who is good friends with Stevie whom knows your dad.  Grin

Wow, no one wants to comment on the middle of this TV show song???

It was co-written by Mike Post and it has a very catchy Beach Boyish middle part.

Ok, What are your thoughts about this song and the Beach Boys interlude???
I love it and can almost hear the Beach Boys themselves singing with cool music backing them up.

Great find!!! Im still trying to figure out who is singing the falsetto.
Its not Brian is it? It sounds like Brian.
I dont see him but then the rest of the guys seems to be singing Ba Ba Barbara Ann at the same time.
Usually Bruce would sing Brian's falsetto but he is clearly singing with the rest of the guys.

Any thoughts?

It's Alan. Unlikely to be Brian as he's not there.

Wow, really? I would have never have thought it was Al. Thanks.

15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The legendary Labor Day weekend, 1961 on: December 04, 2010, 11:14:41 AM
... I'm just saying I think the band probably grew out of many get togethers and rehearsals and that that convenient Labor Day story as being the BIG BANG is nothing more than Murry spin which entrenched itself in BB's lore starting way after the fact.

I believe Mr Stebbins has hit the nail on the proverbial head here.

Murry, always the promoter, probably wanted a story that could be easily repeated to DJ's, record company execs, that was short, interesting and showed the BB's as having the ability to come up with a song and have an immediate hit on their hands.

Its more interesting than having to explain David Marks and Al Jardine and how they were in the band and then left the band etc...  Wink

Frank Devito owns Danmar Drum products. I forgot about him playing on Surfin USA.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surfer Girl Song Question on: November 22, 2010, 07:17:42 PM
So, how can someone write a book and not get a simple fact straight with regards to a famous/well known BB song??

If I had been the writer of this book, that kind of a story would have made me make sure of the facts before publishing it.

How many witnesses/corroborators does one need to say this is fact??

....if this info is not correct then what other info in that book, Heroes & Villains isnt correct??

On a side note, I used to go to Hume Lake Christian Camp for the week in the late 80's. They had a live band to help with worship. I had also played the drums since 1982, so anyone I met who played, I bugged.

They had a speaker at this camp once who claimed to have been a session drummer on the earlier BB records. So, I asked him which songs he played drums on and why.
He said that Dennis wasnt good enough to play on some of the records and that he had played on California Girls, Surfin USA etc....

His name was if I can remember, Steve something or other. I didnt get into the BB's heavily until the day after I graduated from HS in 1989 so I just went along with what this guy was saying.
They did let him play a drum solo on the hume lake bands drumkit. This guy played a Gene Krupa kinda solo but not good enough to have impressed me as a session drummer.

Now I know this guy must have been a fake cause we all know that Hal Blaine was the only other drummer on the earlier BB songs. Right?? (besides Brian on Surfin)
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surfer Girl Song Question on: November 21, 2010, 03:33:20 PM
Okay everyone, I searched and I didnt see anything relevant.

In the book, Heroes & Villains by Steven Gaines, he writes that Surfer Girl was the first time that Brian didn't use any of the other Beach Boys on a BB song.

It says Brian had friends and other musicians sing or play on it but it still sounded like the Beach Boys.

Any truth to this??

Beekeeper

Back in the old days of fanzines, Brad Elliott tracked down two members of The Survivors in 1982 - Rich Alarian & Dave Nowlen. Alarian made a whole bunch of claims that, even back then, looked questionable: for one thing he claimed he sang lead on "Pamela Jean", a falsehood which was comprehensively blown out of the water when SOT Volume 4 came out, of course. He also claimed to have written some of the lyrics credited to Roger Christian. However, his main claim was that Brian used him, and the rest of The Survivors, to record tracks for the Surfer Girl album while the rest of the band were on tour. Now, granted Brian did quit the 1963 Midwest July/August tour to fly back to LA to hold a Honeys session and two Survivors sessions, and it's a fact that the documentation for the Surfer Girl sessions is largely missing, but prior to the tour starting on July 18th, the band only played six dates in California and Arizona, ample time to record some tracks... and in any case, a weeks worth of dates excepted, Brian was on tour with the band. Didn't want to be, but he was.

So, in answer to your 'any truth to this ?' question, I'd say on balance, no, none at all.

Thanks Andrew. I had always wondered about this. I started reading the book again(Heroes & Villains) and upon reading about Surfer Girl, I had to do some asking.

Thanks,
BK

Yes, and do you remember the Coke commercial with polar bears in it and "Little St. Nick" being played?

The Polar Bear "Christmas" commercial is from the 90's and more recent.

I was just wondering if my memory was correct about the Coca Cola commercial & if someone could tell me more.

Thanks,

I searched and didnt see anything conclusive.

Did this bass line tag at the end of "Can't Wait Too Long", ever show up on any other BB song? I saw someone mention its the bass line from "Wind Chimes" but I dont think it is.

Its at  4:53 on this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHXGvDP8iLI

I remember the song Good Vibrations was used for a Sunkist commercial BUT I also seem to recall a Coca Cola one as well.

I can remember a giant inflatable soft drink can in the water. Jet Skis jumping waves.

From around mid 70's to early 80's.

Anyone else remember this?

Thanks everyone for the info. Very interesting trivia. Im sorry if these things have been noticed and discussed before.

I was also wondering if anyone has noticed  from this link(second half of the show) that during "In My Room" how Carl and Al are trying not to laugh while singing and Brian keeps looking over at them starting @ 4:44, (I think they are starting to sing outta key ?).  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQnv8q4N1f4&feature=related

plus Al keeps yelling  to someone off to his right at 1:34 during some of the guitar solos notably "Surfin USA". Any ideas?

A marathon indeed - it took no less than 13 sessions to complete the instrumental track!  Vocally, though, it was reportedly one long marathon session, with Bruce, Carl and Al singing the backgrounds non-stop through the whole song (rather than just doing it in sections, which most people would've), then probably tripling it.  Mike was tacked on later.  Brian was meant to be, but apparently never was.

Thats interesting because I always thought it was Brian singing the real high falsetto part on that song. It sure sounds like Brian.
