I am not sure what this is....

The Beach Boys ~ Groovin' (Summer In Paradise Outtake)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74LPZnpcZO8

It doesn't sound like the Young Rascals' song.

Sounds like someone fiddling around with a couple of soundbytes from "Hot Fun in the Summertime."

These guys do remember way more than you would think; they just need to be asked. Don’t ask me how I know, but Mike will sing you “Wontcha Come Out Tonight” if you prompt him.

I hope someone does prompt him, I love that one!
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Looking Back With Love - Official Release on: March 17, 2021, 10:02:53 PM
I recall Mike saying "I'm not against it" in response to this question in an interview or fan chat a few years back.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys re-unite for “Add Some Music to Your Day” re-recording. on: February 26, 2021, 02:33:08 PM
Gee, that was really lovely and touching. A favourite song from my favourite BB album, it's just perfect for this kind of family project, isn't it?

Went down great too on the 50th anniversary tour, with Brian singing most of Mike's parts.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1997 Tour Footage w/Carl on YouTube on: November 05, 2020, 11:26:20 PM
I don't know why people say this is hard to watch. Sure, you can tell that he's a bit bloated from the meds, but man, he sounds so good! I admire that he did the tour that year, even though he was in the middle of the fight of his life.
Only wish I knew how he would sound at 70-something; I wish he was here.

It is admirable, but a strange choice. Perhaps a way of fighting the idea of the cancer being fatal. If he felt there was a good chance it wouldn't be, surely his wife and kids would have been the complete focus.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tom Petty tried to sing like Carl in “Room at the Top.” on: October 18, 2020, 10:16:14 PM
Tom talked a few years back about releasing a companion album to Wildflowers that would include songs that would have been on the originally envisioned two-disc version of Wildflowers. I wonder if Tom completed the project prior to his death and, if so, if Carl is on any of those tracks.

You can hear Carl much more clearly on the version of Hung up and Overdue released on the new Wildflowers box-set.

Great to read such positive remarks about MIU!
I feel slightly guilty that "Sweet Sunday" is probably my very favourite Carl lead, as apparently he wasn't overwhelmed with the song himself.

Thanks, BBsCovers! For the life of me I can’t find those quotes in the source provided. I’m assuming they are from page 2 of the rock cellar mag article which archive.org can’t link to (and the original article is not found on Rock Cellars website). I found this quote on page 1 and it’s another example of Mike’s support/involvement in the project:

“As a matter of fact, Mike was talking about how one of his dream projects would be a box set with one disc highlighting each of the group members’ strongest moments over the years, which is incidentally something that Mark (Linett) has been wanting to do for many years too.”

At this stage seven to eight years later with nothing to show of this "dream project", this story in retrospect really doesn't do Mike any favors.

I disagree. All sorts of projects, dream or otherwise get touted at some point and take a long time to (or never) to appear. It demonstrates a willingness to celebrate each Beach Boy individually and as something akin to equals. It doesn't quite fit the notion of Mike wanting to "be" the Beach Boys.

The point is that eight years later it hasn't happened,  Mike has NEVER mentioned it in an interview,  nor has he made any other moves to champion such things.

I don't recall any of the Beach Boys "championing" too many releases outside of new solo albums, but I agree it would be nice if he did.

10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: August 31, 2020, 05:27:58 AM

It is possible, but I vaguely remember Brian having very little, if anything at all about "Student Demonstration Time" in the Sunflower twofer liner notes. I think he called it "too intense" or something to that effect.

Although, that doesn't explain "Don't Go Near The Water" not being mentioned.

"All I wanna do" got mentioned today in Brian's post about Sunflower, so that surely shuts down the idea of any Feel Flows hinting to us. "Don't Go Near The Water" is pleasant, but perhaps Camp Brian doesn't like to be reminded of the many Al/Mike co-writes in the 70's...
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Solo piano album on: June 09, 2020, 09:04:15 PM

You still have time to change that all around. I'm 7 1/2 years older than you and while I can't do what I used to do, I'm doing my best to not be exhausted and work out three or four days a week, take care of 2 acres and have a part time job. I wish I were 65 again! Brian is 5 years older than I am and I'm amazed that he can do what he does. He's an inspiration, indeed!

No doubt you can source a drop of inspiration (in purely that regard at least) from all our beloved Beach Boys then, even Michael E. Love?
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys as part of a wedding on: May 17, 2020, 08:59:10 PM

I hadn't mentioned it above, we're doing three "first dance" songs, one my pick, one hers, and one together pick. Mine actually is "Only With You," but with the tag from Dennis' version spliced on at the end.

Great choice and I agree, only way to listen to it Smiley
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys as part of a wedding on: May 16, 2020, 07:41:54 PM
My wife and I sang "I do" at our wedding, with our bridal party doing backing vocals. Not a triumph but fun enough.

I just wish "Only with You" had gotten in there somewhere but I hadn't bought the "Passions/Holland" twofer at that stage.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike Love single on: May 02, 2020, 12:25:39 AM
It's not magic but it's certainly agreeable enough for something whipped up in a few days at home.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike home listed for sale- where is he moving? on: April 22, 2020, 10:19:15 PM
He's going down to Kokomo, naturally.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If 15 Big Ones was a completely originals album on: April 21, 2020, 07:28:50 PM

WB wanted sails, not quality.

Hence why we got track 3 on the Light Album!
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1973 Carl interview with Bob Harris - A Soft Spoken Symphony on: December 26, 2019, 01:10:51 AM
Thoughtful is the word! You'll notice the only time Carl is quick to say something is when Harris is attempting to wind it up, and it appears he's suddenly realised he's given the wrong impression about the likelihood of any of the members doing other things... and "manifest" is a fun choice of word. Thanks for the link.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike working on yet another new album on: June 27, 2019, 11:39:57 PM
I actually sort of enjoy the new single. Sure, it's corny as hell, and the *interesting* drum mixing gives me flashbacks to SIP, but I have to admit, it did get stuck in my head. At first listen I was a little underwhelmed, but after a few listens I can say it definitely hits the spot in a way. It's not perfect, but I'd still take an ok Mike Love song over many other artists. Hearing all of Mike's new stuff really makes me curious what Brian, Bruce, and especially Al have in their back catalog, or 'vaults'

I have a real soft spot for the original, so can't help but enjoy this version. It has the same catchy chorus, but I miss the guitars and faster tempo of the earlier version.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: recently uploaded crazy Beach Boys commerical, staring Mike+Bruce on: March 23, 2019, 01:02:42 AM

- What is that wretched wannabe Beach Boys music that's playing? Is that some Adrian Baker soundalike stuff? Or just generic library copycat "surf" music?

Sounds a bit like the backing vocals from Crocodile Rock.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love - \ on: September 27, 2018, 04:08:29 AM
Sounds good to me, no noticeable auto-tune to my ears!
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rock N Roll to the Rescue on: September 14, 2018, 05:59:22 PM
The song resulted in another a long line of slightly weird, awkward TV appearances where Brian and the band mimed the song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxJfuml6ir8

And then they did it live at Farm Aid, with Al singing Brian's lines:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfwxe0W9h2A

Al and Mike share Brian's vocals in that Farm Aid live performance. Rough start and Al is uncharacteristically hoarse, but the song comes off alright once they get into it.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Definite Smiley Smile Message Board's Song & Album Rankings - Results on: September 08, 2018, 09:56:33 PM
The surprise for me is All I Wanna Do making the top ten - a deep cut well known to Beach Boy fanatics but not usuallly ranked up with the likes of God Only Knows and Good Vibrations.  This Whole World is not unexpected.

I’m surprised there hasn’t been more responses to the poll.  How many members does the board have?  This should be something everyone, even just lurkers and readers who usually don’t post, could participate in.

It would be better if it was restricted to album tracks. As much as I'd hate to deny members their more esotoric choices, I think a narrower focus would lead to clearer results. Not that the top ten here looks bad, I realise I'm in the small minority of people that don't enjoy Surf's Up much until the coda.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Discuss & Rate Brian Wilson Songs Day by Day on: September 07, 2018, 03:45:37 AM
Today's song is Night Time.

I know I'm in the minority here, but best on the album for me. Super-catchy singalong in all it's 80's glory. "Shelter" is it's latter-day cousin.

Your ratings for Walkin' the Line:
1-0 vote
2-1 vote
3-4 votes
4-2 votes
5-0 vote

I would have given 5 to Walkin' the Line, it's really grown on me, particularly the instrumental break. Brian was right to be excited about this and Night Time IMHO.

Nice bio about The Beach Boys will Mike, Brian, Bruce, and Al. Interviewer asks If Mike still loves Brian, which was a question I was not expecting!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PegO2j-KfC8

Thanks for this. I like the demonstrative approval of Bruce after that question also (his only contribution other then sitting next to Mike).
