Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1997 Tour Footage w/Carl on YouTube

I don't know why people say this is hard to watch. Sure, you can tell that he's a bit bloated from the meds, but man, he sounds so good! I admire that he did the tour that year, even though he was in the middle of the fight of his life. Only wish I knew how he would sound at 70-something; I wish he was here.
It is admirable, but a strange choice. Perhaps a way of fighting the idea of the cancer being fatal. If he felt there was a good chance it wouldn't be, surely his wife and kids would have been the complete focus.

Thanks, BBsCovers! For the life of me I can’t find those quotes in the source provided. I’m assuming they are from page 2 of the rock cellar mag article which archive.org can’t link to (and the original article is not found on Rock Cellars website). I found this quote on page 1 and it’s another example of Mike’s support/involvement in the project:
“As a matter of fact, Mike was talking about how one of his dream projects would be a box set with one disc highlighting each of the group members’ strongest moments over the years, which is incidentally something that Mark (Linett) has been wanting to do for many years too.”
At this stage seven to eight years later with nothing to show of this "dream project", this story in retrospect really doesn't do Mike any favors. I disagree. All sorts of projects, dream or otherwise get touted at some point and take a long time to (or never) to appear. It demonstrates a willingness to celebrate each Beach Boy individually and as something akin to equals. It doesn't quite fit the notion of Mike wanting to "be" the Beach Boys. The point is that eight years later it hasn't happened, Mike has NEVER mentioned it in an interview, nor has he made any other moves to champion such things. I don't recall any of the Beach Boys "championing" too many releases outside of new solo albums, but I agree it would be nice if he did.

It is possible, but I vaguely remember Brian having very little, if anything at all about "Student Demonstration Time" in the Sunflower twofer liner notes. I think he called it "too intense" or something to that effect.
Although, that doesn't explain "Don't Go Near The Water" not being mentioned.
"All I wanna do" got mentioned today in Brian's post about Sunflower, so that surely shuts down the idea of any Feel Flows hinting to us. "Don't Go Near The Water" is pleasant, but perhaps Camp Brian doesn't like to be reminded of the many Al/Mike co-writes in the 70's...

You still have time to change that all around. I'm 7 1/2 years older than you and while I can't do what I used to do, I'm doing my best to not be exhausted and work out three or four days a week, take care of 2 acres and have a part time job. I wish I were 65 again! Brian is 5 years older than I am and I'm amazed that he can do what he does. He's an inspiration, indeed!
No doubt you can source a drop of inspiration (in purely that regard at least) from all our beloved Beach Boys then, even Michael E. Love?

I actually sort of enjoy the new single. Sure, it's corny as hell, and the *interesting* drum mixing gives me flashbacks to SIP, but I have to admit, it did get stuck in my head. At first listen I was a little underwhelmed, but after a few listens I can say it definitely hits the spot in a way. It's not perfect, but I'd still take an ok Mike Love song over many other artists. Hearing all of Mike's new stuff really makes me curious what Brian, Bruce, and especially Al have in their back catalog, or 'vaults'
I have a real soft spot for the original, so can't help but enjoy this version. It has the same catchy chorus, but I miss the guitars and faster tempo of the earlier version.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Definite Smiley Smile Message Board's Song & Album Rankings - Results

The surprise for me is All I Wanna Do making the top ten - a deep cut well known to Beach Boy fanatics but not usuallly ranked up with the likes of God Only Knows and Good Vibrations. This Whole World is not unexpected.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been more responses to the poll. How many members does the board have? This should be something everyone, even just lurkers and readers who usually don’t post, could participate in.
It would be better if it was restricted to album tracks. As much as I'd hate to deny members their more esotoric choices, I think a narrower focus would lead to clearer results. Not that the top ten here looks bad, I realise I'm in the small minority of people that don't enjoy Surf's Up much until the coda.

I'm afraid the most likely answer as to "what's really left" is the morbid one. The profile will be raised again when someone, and especially Brian, dies. That's when another trove will be released, the major outlets will celebrate the legacy, etc.
We may even get something as "exciting" as the first posthumous Tom Petty box set out in a month or two...
