Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Bass Playing

Which reminds me of Willie Nelson's answer when getting asked by Ray Price if he (Willie) could play bass. "Can't everybody?" Willie had never played bass before but became the bass player for Ray's Cherokee Cowboys after that. Like a lot of players with (presumably) no money, Willie would've spent years playing 'fake bass' on the low strings of his guitar. When it's time to move over, you already know what you're doing and all the notes are in the same place. Just bigger McCartney did something similar in the old Beatles days, the bass he had to play was an electric guitar with piano strings fitted.

Both Brian and Bruce had a weird picking technique.
Bruce picked. Brian thumbed. Yeah that 'thumbing' technique, I've seen Bruce use it too. That thumbing technique that Brian uses actually was 'the' technique at one time. When bass made its transition from the stand-up bass used by people like Elvis's Bill Black to the electric basses made by Fender, the thumb technique from the stand-up remained until people figured out more efficient ways of playing - including using fingers, pick, or indeed slapping with both thumb and fingers. This can be seen in older basses (or reissues thereof), where instead of a thumb rest allowing the fingers to play, there's a finger rest/grab handle allowing the thumb to play while still being anchored.

This doesn't really excite me much. Seeing a bunch of bands, probably current and from yester year, performing classic BB songs. With or without whosever left, this strikes me as a worse effort that the 25th anniverrsary special from Hawaii...which wasn't really that good. We shall see. Maybe they can have that obnoxious guy play Do It Again, and have him strut around the stage with Mike screaming "DO IT"...or have Stamos mug for the cameras "playing" a guitar that isn't even plugged in. Would have been better to just have whose left, with Blondie and Ricky too, play a few classics...just that alone would have been enough IMHO.
There are good ways of doing such tributes - the Kennedy Centre Honors type shows are generally well-regarded https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cZ_EFAmj08Of course I wouldn't put it past the BBs to do something completely full of naff inflatable palm trees and the rest, but this shows it can be done...

Finally got my box set. Had a massive score/scratch on the front of it - nice.
Something I find annoying about these boxes - the separate sleeves won't fit back inside the box if they have a protective outer on them. So you either take your records out of the box or leave them inside, unsheathed. Or not care, like people used to do.
Also the first time I've seen a single-sided 12" other than on some promotional DJ singles

Actually, I've been disappointed that previous compilations have ignored the 80's, except for Kokomo. Even on a big box like MIC, it's like the 80s/90s never existed. Someday, someway, we need to have a comp that collects all the stray tracks like Chasin' the Sky, Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue, California Dreamin', Still Cruisin', Somewhere Near Japan, Crocodile Rock, Runaway.
Not only that but HQ versions of the videos of those songs. Some are in excellent quality while others like Somewhere in Japan exist only with prostage stamp resolution video taped off VH1. Someone must have them in a clean, HQ version.

One of the things that lends credence to The Beach Boys being a 'brand band' as opposed to a group of specific named individuals. Most people don't know who Brian or Mike are (let alone Carl), but they could perhaps tell you who Paul McCartney, John Lennon or Freddie Mercury are/were. There is a difference.

Regarding the documentary, unfortunately I don't think we'll be looking at anything near the scope of the "Beatles Anthology" if we're looking at simply a feature-length doc.
Someone recently dug up some info indicating the doc is being done with Disney, so I'm guessing we're looking at a single, "feature-length" documentary (*possibly* two parts at the most), probably on the Disney+ streaming service.
I think we're looking at, at best, something more like an updated version of the "Endless Harmony" doc as opposed to a BBs version of the "Beatles Anthology."
Perhaps something of the scope of The Bee Gees one on HBO - which still did well for them https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bee_Gees:_How_Can_You_Mend_a_Broken_Heart
