I must admit I hadn’t heard of Jakob Dylan, but to look at him it’s pretty easy to work out how he got his break in music :D

I have something to say about your fundraising campaign but I still need to find the right words. When I do, I'll post it in the Welcome thread.

Nope. This is too important to tuck away; it needs saying here, out in the open:

You see, folks, I'm a little confused. Are there really just six people in the world who would like this series to continue? There are over 50 subscribers to Joshilyn's YouTube channel. There have been well over 10,000 views of her video-related topics on Smiley alone, to say nothing of the warm and encouraging comments along the way.

I find this hard to reconcile with the number of donations so far. For a message board with a heck of a reputation in Beach Boys Land one would expect a little more commitment from its members. If this falls through, we all stand to lose, including Joshilyn herself.

This series is literally making history. As HeyJude points out on their Facebook page (see HJ's signature) the "Power Mower" project is in all likelihood unique. In my opinion it’s the best thing that has happened to BB fandom in years. Just look at the list of goodies Joshilyn has lined up for future videos. Please don't let this golden opportunity go to waste. If the funding process stops now (despite a magnificent first donation), we'd be throwing that opportunity away, maybe for ever.

Please, folks, help push the amount raised so far into four figures--that would be a wonderful start.

It would be a tragedy if JH's "Power Mower" project were to be allowed to founder, particularly when we can do something about it now. Let's face it--we may never see its like again.

Are Beatles fans just...geekier?  I know, I know, these people have been doing it longer than I have, just gotta give it time.  It's just interesting how the internet works, and interesting how fandoms work.

For instance, here is a video that came out just two weeks ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAg-DYlcbhg

It is the isolated transcription performance of the percussion on the Beatles' "And I love Her."  It's done by the wonderful folks at Ably House--I love their videos.  It has 2500 views.  That is my goal for my videos.  Maybe it's the silly Beach Boys/Beatles "Competition" thing that I'm falling prey to.  But I really want to show the world how smart and brilliant the Beach Boys music is.  Frankly, the parts are often way more interesting that what was happening on Beatles records (which of course means nothing in the overall effect of the final track, necessarily.)

Anyway--just some thoughts.

The Beatles musicality has been written about virtually since they started - dissertations have been written on the topic, there are entire DVDs worth of material about it, documentaries, books...

The biggest difference between the two bands? The Beatles had a very high standard, where most songs would be a 9/10.
The Beach Boys had some higher highs, but also, many lower lows than the Beatles.

Don't be put off though, the vast amount of people listening to the bands aren't musicians and never will be.

Hard to say. Born in the 80s so some things like Fun Fun Fun were 'around'

This is the first one I seriously remember picking up on: this scene in Look Who's Talking :D

I latched onto Brian's voice immediately but it would take years before I knew what group it was and who was singing

“How did Carl bring joy to the group?”

“He’d say ‘let’s go guys’”

“And what did Al Jardine bring to the group?”

“He sang”

WTOP audio interview

Warning: it’s an awkward listen. Amazingly the interviewer gets 15 minutes of material without Brian really getting involved

I wonder what Mike's cd for 2020 is going to be?

Seeing that Superbowl mess, I was wondering...
What other bands in the history of rock'n roll have gone from the sublime to the sad / ridiculous / tacky / awkward spectrum?

That's something that always amazes me with The Beach Boys : When you see videos like that or the "Summer of Love" video, it must be almost impossible to tell someone who've never heard of them that they're the same band from the 60s and 7Os.

Because, and Mike knows this, in the public eye the entire band's output is closer to Summer of Love than anything else. That's what pays the mortgage.

Reading between the lines I wonder if this is some of Nick Walusko's old gear and associated cases.

I found tis on the web. It says it is from the Super Bowl 1998.

The infamous day Brian, Carl (near death) and Al watched on tv as the "Beach Boys", to their surprise, performed at the Super Bowl.

I don't know if it's wildly available but I recently found the Super Bowl clip on youtube.. I"d never seen it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELjvd6Nl870

What a mess

Incredibly surreal to see Phil Hartman introducing them. It makes it feel like this is some bizarro episode of The Simpsons where Troy McClure is introducing some strange alternate reality version of the band. And Mike's voice sounds too good here and I'm sure it must be lip-synching to studio vocals, no way those are actual live vocals.

What a weird time for the band. Phil Hartman gave them a spoken introduction and had to bend over backwards into a pretzel to describe the band that was about to play. It felt like that description had to be signed off by a bunch of power lawyers, and that's probably not far from the truth. It's also interesting how this band is billed as "a tribute to the beach boys" (for the only time ever?) in contrast to the current band which is actually billed as "the Beach Boys".

That said, considering the studio vocals, they sounded better than I was expecting. But the whole thing is just very weird and awkward. And why wasn't Al here? That was because Mike didn't like his attitude, correct? Poor Al.

What time in the clip? I can't find any beach boys on the linked video

One of the things that's kinda interesting about the Beach Boys is how often instruments are swapped - including vocals, that have alternated around Brian, Bruce, Carl, Al, Mike and the session guys over the years. Bass has gone between Brian, Carl, Al and Bruce. Mike used to play the theremin synth thing on Good Vibes...

I followed another independent documentary film once that took years to come out (about 7-8 years after it was 'done') as they couldn't clear the music. Netflix is full of dodgy documentaries with soundalike music that don't quite hit the mark, and I'd hate for it to become one of those.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: December 31, 2019, 03:33:53 AM
Per "Endless Summer Quarterly" - it's in the finishing stage and hopefully will get an independent cinema/festival release 'soon'

And additionally - Al Jardine reckons a Love and Mercy musical is being planned for Broadway.

June 19: Beach Boys play Norway

June 19/20: Brian Wilson band plays Spain.

Dare to dream...? Both bands in Europe at the same time

If the BBs version has the better verse, this has the better chorus
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: December 13, 2019, 02:13:48 AM
IIRC, the copyright motivation actually resulted from a misunderstanding of the law, which is why most artists (including the Beatles!) did them for a year or two and then stopped. The BBs continued because of fan interest. Seems like fans weren’t interested enough in last year’s for them to continue.

Not according to Mark Linett last year:

"It has a lot to do with 50-year copyright term limit in the U.K. and the E.U. for sound recordings. Back in 2013, some copyright tribunal amended that, and added 20 years to the term. But there was a sort of use-it-or-lose-it provision, which basically said unreleased recordings have to be officially released within 50 years of creation in order to get copyright protection. And I think they did this because in 2012, the first Beatles recordings were starting to fall into the public domain. It happened with the Beach Boys too — the Surfin’ Safari album in that territory is now public domain, because the registration wasn’t retroactive."

But The Beatles and Beach Boys stuff was released

I see these things as copyrighting things like sessions or alternate takes

I've got access to Aus/NZ/Vietnam stuff, but I don't know what I'm looking for... any ideas?
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sloop John B guitars ~ isolation video on: December 12, 2019, 02:44:41 AM
Some have requested that I put together a score for the arrangement.  I had typed it all up in standard music notation, but Tab is helpful for many guitarists, so I added that with the caveat that I'm not that familiar with tab standards and how you do things with it, so use it as you will.

More to the point, it's the only notation some of us understand :D Looks great, thank you Joshilyn

Something that’s always been a puzzler for me is figuring out the vocal arrangements. Some episodes on the vocals would be pretty neat to see. 😉

I found this the other day which makes it surprisingly easy to read

https://www.surfermoon.com/tabs.shtml#vocal

There are a few songs (Til I Die, etc) linked on there. The GitHub site linked to is offline now, but archived here: https://web.archive.org/web/20120205222544/http://beach-boys.aure.com/
Seems some of the linked files are gone though.
