Weezer will be absolutely made up to be playing after them

Why would Carnie need to miss her own dad.. could she not.. visit him?

Being part of a complex family is hard to understand if you're outside of it (or perhaps not experienced this yourself)

Sometimes everyone being alive and visitable isn't enough.

I'm sure everyone would want to see Paul McCartney participate, but what would be the point of him showing up and singing "Let it Be" or "Hey Jude"?

When he played at the George Harrison tribute gig he was playing on George's songs. Hell, I even think he played on at least one song about himself - and not in a complimentary way!

Carney was the guest on a beach boy oriented internet talk show last night and she pretty much said that Brian's touring career days have ended and that he's retired from touring. If that's true hope he's healthy and happy  would be nice to hear some sort of a formal statement made though. She also said she was very concerned about her dad's health and hadn't seen him in a while for some reason. Hope all is okay with Brian

Which reminds me of Willie Nelson's answer when getting asked by Ray Price if he (Willie) could play bass. "Can't everybody?" Willie had never played bass before but became the bass player for Ray's Cherokee Cowboys after that.  Cheesy

Like a lot of players with (presumably) no money, Willie would've spent years playing 'fake bass' on the low strings of his guitar. When it's time to move over, you already know what you're doing and all the notes are in the same place. Just bigger Smiley

McCartney did something similar in the old Beatles days, the bass he had to play was an electric guitar with piano strings fitted.

Both Brian and Bruce had a weird picking technique.

Bruce picked.

Brian thumbed.

Yeah that 'thumbing' technique, I've seen Bruce use it too.

That thumbing technique that Brian uses actually was 'the' technique at one time. When bass made its transition from the stand-up bass used by people like Elvis's Bill Black to the electric basses made by Fender, the thumb technique from the stand-up remained until people figured out more efficient ways of playing - including using fingers, pick, or indeed slapping with both thumb and fingers.

This can be seen in older basses (or reissues thereof), where instead of a thumb rest allowing the fingers to play, there's a finger rest/grab handle allowing the thumb to play while still being anchored.

This doesn't really excite me much. Seeing a bunch of bands, probably current and from yester year, performing classic BB songs. With or without whosever left, this strikes me as a worse effort that the 25th anniverrsary special from Hawaii...which wasn't really that good. We shall see. Maybe they can have that obnoxious guy play Do It Again, and have him strut around the stage with Mike screaming "DO IT"...or have Stamos mug for the cameras "playing" a guitar that isn't even plugged in. Would have been better to just have whose left, with Blondie and Ricky too, play a few classics...just that alone would have been enough IMHO.

There are good ways of doing such tributes - the Kennedy Centre Honors type shows are generally well-regarded

Of course I wouldn't put it past the BBs to do something completely full of naff inflatable palm trees and the rest, but this shows it can be done...

Finally got my box set. Had a massive score/scratch on the front of it - nice.

Something I find annoying about these boxes - the separate sleeves won't fit back inside the box if they have a protective outer on them.  So you either take your  records out of the box or leave them inside, unsheathed. Or not care, like people used to do.

Also the first time I've seen a single-sided 12" other than on some promotional DJ singles

I’d support the remastered release of those latter videos if only it meant being able to watch a documentary about the Beach Boys without having to see them messing about in that sodding swimming pool

Actually, I've been disappointed that previous compilations have ignored the 80's, except for Kokomo. Even on a big box like MIC, it's like the 80s/90s never existed. Someday, someway, we need to have a comp that collects all the stray tracks like Chasin' the Sky, Rock 'N' Roll to the Rescue, California Dreamin', Still Cruisin', Somewhere Near Japan, Crocodile Rock, Runaway.

Not only that but HQ versions of the videos of those songs. Some are in excellent quality while others like Somewhere in Japan exist only with prostage stamp resolution video taped off VH1. Someone must have them in a clean, HQ version.

Have Pet Sounds songs not had updated official remixes since 1996 then?

Oh no, have I given them ideas in asking that...
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why was Carl not replaced? on: May 19, 2022, 10:38:24 AM
One of the things that lends credence to The Beach Boys being a 'brand band' as opposed to a group of specific named individuals. Most people don't know who Brian or Mike are (let alone Carl), but they could perhaps tell you who Paul McCartney, John Lennon or Freddie Mercury are/were. There is a difference.

The foil case on the limited versions sounds fun

Regarding the documentary, unfortunately I don't think we'll be looking at anything near the scope of the "Beatles Anthology" if we're looking at simply a feature-length doc.

Someone recently dug up some info indicating the doc is being done with Disney, so I'm guessing we're looking at a single, "feature-length" documentary (*possibly* two parts at the most), probably on the Disney+ streaming service.

I think we're looking at, at best, something more like an updated version of the "Endless Harmony" doc as opposed to a BBs version of the "Beatles Anthology."

Perhaps something of the scope of The Bee Gees one on HBO - which still did well for them https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bee_Gees:_How_Can_You_Mend_a_Broken_Heart

This press release around the Sounds of Summer 6LP also mentions a tribute concert.

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-beach-boys-announce-yearlong-60th-anniversary-global-celebration-301535248.html

Would suggest that if it's not in that press statement, then that tribute gig (which may feature some, all or none of the BBs) is the closest we'll get to a 60th celebration
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer 6LP Announced on: April 28, 2022, 06:25:57 AM
Here's the full press release, which mentions other upcoming projects (the So Tough/Holland archival set, a feature-length documentary, etc.):

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-beach-boys-announce-yearlong-60th-anniversary-global-celebration-301535248.html

Good spot. Sounds like the "tribute special" is the closest anyone's getting to a 60th gig - which may include some, all or none of the BBs.

The documentary is major news though - could do for them what the Anthology did for the flagging Beatles brand in the 90s.

20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anybody went to a Beach Boys (Mike and Bruce) concert recently? Your opinion? on: April 14, 2022, 07:35:59 AM
I would agree that, tempting as it is, please don't use audience recordings on YouTube to form your assessment. There's something that phone microphones do to the instrument and vocal mix that completely changes it from the way the audience actually hears it. You really do have to be there to hear it properly.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anybody went to a Beach Boys (Mike and Bruce) concert recently? Your opinion? on: April 01, 2022, 02:54:10 AM
It’s actually a pretty decent band. Like the BW band, it has possibly too many people onstage which may or may not be to your liking.

Everyone in this band is fully participating, and at some gigs they do enormously long set lists with a few curios

You’ll enjoy it

There's something I really like about the Al show that you don't get from the rather bloated two other bands - just a few people on stage, just enough, working to fill the gaps. It sounds a hell of a lot better.

Might this be the project that will surface later this year, according to Al?

As a foreigner, the music genre of 'autotune country' is quite something to behold
