Looks like a nice complete collection of smile sessions. Any idea about what of this stuff is totally unheard?
Any revelatory or interesting sounds?

Great!

I haven't heard that interview! Can you put it up somewhere?

His way of talking sounds like a bit of later-Brian-spaced-repetive talk, but with his still clean voice.
Crazy!

I just listened to this album, and think a similar project would work great using bb material, using the entire catalog. Take the greatest harmonies and instrumentals and mash it up and highlitning the really cool moments and stuff. Lots of harmonies and stuff are so hidden in despers complex sunflower and surfsupmixes. Having fun with those tracks and isolating stuff would be perfect. wild honey also has some cool tracks that (besides a regular stereo mix of course), could really benefit with a treatment like this making some sort of rnb/soul passage. TFor example, the harmonies of "here comes the night" sounds incredibly powerful acapella and up front.

Heh, I have a feeling Alan boyd is keeping his mouth shut to surprise us.

Who knows, maybe he has secretly aquired the Durrie Parks acetates and will put them up on the new site. Razz

You want more? OK:

"Wild Honey" - Live @ Crystal Palace Sports Stadium, South London - June 3, 1972
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkKqL0fTsu8

Fascinating how fast Ed Carter changes from Bass Guitar to E-Guitar! Cheesy

WOW, what a totally amazing, great rocking band! Is this the Beach Boys??  Shocked
Mike love looks cool also, really into playing that theremin.
Blondie and Ricky really added some spark to the live band!

This is a concert I really want to watch in its enterity!
I wonder if more is filmed..
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Joanna Newsom's new album on: September 18, 2006, 07:18:32 AM
Yeeessss.. I got it. It leaked, so every fan has it, but I will absolutely definetly buy it on LP when it arrives.

..and yeah, I LOVE the new album! The whole album is a dream collaboration come true. Van Dyke Parks arrangements are very tasteful. I though the arrangement on the first track bas a bit disjointed, but I got justed to it after some listens, and the other tracks are totally marvelous!

I rank joanna and her music up there with Syd Barrett, Brian wilson and so on. Damn!
The album is a true masterpiece. Her voice has improved also. Its stronger and she has gotten better control over it, I think.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: September 12, 2006, 07:02:38 PM
"I Sleep Alone" was really good, I'm surpised Brian never released it in any form.  Thanks for posting it Jasper!

I wonder what the chances are that a studio version exists somewhere?

It does..  Tongue
In the studioversion Brian sings falsetto all the way during the chorus.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: September 12, 2006, 06:08:09 PM
hah whaaaaat Jasper?

There was one or two fumbles with the lyrics, but its nothing.
He was in very good voice, and the falsettoparts sounds great.

Thanks for finally posting it!! =D

14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: John Lennon 'Mike Love is a jerk' on: September 10, 2006, 07:02:58 AM
Hmm, I think this deserves a new thread somewhere. I awaited this album since last year, and the news about van dykes involvment was some sort of dream collaboration come true. I have, as lots of other fans, already got hold of the leaked album, and will buy it on double lp when it is released in november (recorded totally analogue, mixed at abbey road). It is amazing. Van dyke parks arrangements filled out the songs perfectly.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: September 10, 2006, 04:20:53 AM
hey, Jasper!

Transfered that "I sleep alone" video yet?  Azn
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Brian album announced on: September 06, 2006, 11:05:11 AM
Heh, I don't care if he uses real instruments or not, only thing that matters is that he is genuinly interested in the recordings and makes them as perfect as he can, based on his own current preferences and not someone elses or someones elses expectations.

And I still think he can sing a nice falsetto, if he really tries to perfect it when recording. The falsetto on surfs up (a childrens sooong) I think is totally fine. I still prefer a later-day brian falsetto to someone elses.

Someone named George-something made a mix some time ago(hmm, QUITE some time!, about 2 years ago) that incorporated sections that could have been assembled in april '67 to a quite cohorent and nice listen. He made a stereo and monoversion of this edit. I think I have it saved somewhere.. hmm

found'em, am I allowed to put links up to yousendit?
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: August 30, 2006, 07:51:47 AM
Wow, Brian looks like his early seventies self when he is playing bas! Great footage! and darn those french speakers!
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's your favorite BWPS section? on: August 29, 2006, 07:14:32 AM
The "cycle of life" section I feel is most perfetly contructed, but the chorus lyrics for
"song for children" takes away the impact from the song with the same name.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Caroline No. A new Pet Sounds musical? on: August 04, 2006, 07:28:23 PM
In general, I think musicals based on popular music feels forced and are a silly watch. The more I respect and highly regard a certain piece of music, the more I will prefer to not have it performed as a musical. Abba works very well, since the songs are all hits, fun and made for the masses.
Of course, I love Abba and respect the music, but it has qualities fit for musicals and entertainment and so it works.

Petsounds is a very emotional, and in a musical way, advanced piece of art. While it has some hits, I strongly believe it will have a hard time finding a audience that will appreciate it. The casual beachboys fans won't recognice and appreciate the songs, and the mote hardcore fans(like the people at the board),  will cringe watching the musical. Setting the emotions from petsounds to something concrete and made up, not originated from Brians Wilsons head, degenerates it, just like a book in general is better than a movie remake.

The idea of singing out your feelings for situations made to the songs from Petsounds is cringe material.

Just my bag of cents. But good luck anyway!
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: July 26, 2006, 01:07:03 PM
I really like the flow of your mix! about the same rythm on all the odd tracks, creating something different and very cool!

But please rename your mix and description text to something that doesn't make it seem like its some crap.
like "smile era footage and sound" for example.
I don't want to post this link to a friend when its called "Bits & Pieces that don't make any sense".." blabla sorry folks.." and so on. Tongue
Its really a great mix of smile-era footage and sound!
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1970 Paris footage Everyone has to see this!! on: July 20, 2006, 01:21:16 PM
YES!

Very cool! The france overdubs was annoying, but man is it cool to see some bb performances from 1970!!
it looks very intimate, there is no stage, just the floor.

Why are there no replies to this thread!?

thank you very much for the link!
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: June 22, 2006, 04:27:49 PM

hmm, don't want to nag, but, Jasper, could you possibly post I Sleep Alone live?
I really like to see this! Thank you for sharing all these rare videos!! They are totally amazing.

25  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: June 11, 2006, 04:46:10 PM
Is that lipsynched? For a second or two at one point it seemed like his lips weren't moving,.

It's live. He also sang "I Sleep Alone" and made a couple of mistakes.

It seems to me that the harmony parts, like the middle section and the ending section,
is prerecorded with lotsa Brians, while the lead is live. Man I would love to get hold of that backingtrack!

..Please post ISA!! Unreleased song, perfomed live, that's ultra-yummy.
