They didn't put the song on the album because Holland was rejected for not having a potential hit single. I don't know why "We Got Love" was targeted, but it was the decision. I dunno, "Funky Pretty" is just NOT radio-friendly. Not the studio version, at least!

"Funky Pretty" actually got a decent amount of AirPlay on AOR stations for a few months after HOLLAND was released.  At least in the New York market.

some of these were used for the in concert album, right? great shots!

I don't think so. I believe the album was released about 2 weeks before this show.

I think I'd take any combination of the songs mentioned in these posts over what wound up being 15 Big Ones.

Assuming Dennis would have let the band use his material, here's an album I'd have waited in line for at my local record store on release day:

The Beach Boys - It's OK

Side 1
It's OK
My Love Lives On
Shortenin' Bread
Holy Man
Ding Dang

Side 2
Good Timin'
Rainbows
Battle Hymn of the Republic
California Feelin'
Pacific Ocean Blue
80  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So...What is your favorite MIC track? on: November 19, 2014, 12:57:30 PM
Made In California got a HUGELY unfair trashing on this board when it came out. it's an excellent box set, and better than Good Vibrations in many ways. Lots more material, for one thing. Also, the material actually covers pretty much right up to, pretty much, current-day Beach Boys, while the 1993 box set only goes up to "Kokomo." And there's a much better variety of material overall. Perhaps most importantly: let's say someone hears Made In California and is exposed to, say, Sunflower material for the first time through it. Well, just about every album the Beach Boys ever did, save Still Cruisin' and Bummer in Paradise, is in print or available for (legal!) download, and even the latter two are still pretty easy to find. In 1993, I had my first exposure to post-1969 Beach Boys (except 15 Big Ones) from the Good Vibrations set, but I couldn't get any of the 1970-and-later albums because they were out of print!

But having said that, my favorites:
- "It's About Time" and "Wild Honey", both live...wow! Next time someone tries to tell you that the Beach Boys just weren't a rockin' concert band, well...use these tunes to prove that there were times when they absolutely were!
- "Our Sweet Love" vocals and strings...I was never a fan of the song as it appeared on Sunflower, but man, this track is nothing but divinity. Never realized before that Carl harmonizes with himself on this song, too.
- "You're Still A Mystery" -- I much prefer Brian's mellower voice over his very harsh mid-'90s voice, and it's nice to finally have this song in studio quality!
- "Don't Worry, Baby" with Brian's single-tracked vocal...holy cow, he sang the living crap out of that!!

Believe it or not, WIBNTLA was never one of my favorites from this set. I just don't find it to be the end-all, be-all it's been hyped up to be all these years. Is it a great Dennis track? Absolutely. Is it a tragedy that he pulled it off Surf's Up and that it never surfaced again until 2013? Hell, yes. But just not the absolute best Dennis song. To me, it's not really up there with, say, "Forever" and "River Song."

All good points. Re "Wild Honey:"  A lot of folks on this board weren't happy with the mix.  The 2 sticking points were the "theremin" too low in the mix & the excess of reverb on Blondie's lead vocal. While I personally would like to hear more woo woo machine, I absolutely love the MIC mix done by Mark.  Re "WIBNTLA:"  it remains my favorite track from MIC, but Dennis' body of work is so great, that it's certainly not his best.

Did Carl play any bass on this record or is the Priess book just wrong on that quote?
This has been bugging me too - given that Ed seems to be playing lead guitar on "Help Me Rhonda", either Blondie or Carl could be playing bass on that track.

If I'm right, I think Help Me Rhonda has always been weird with its bass players - that was one of the songs where Bruce would play Bass on even into the early 80s, and also one where Brian would occasionally play Bass on in the 80s, as said in a thread describing the "Chinese Fire Drill" in the 1980s (which, now that I check... was actually written by you. How about that?).

However, later in that thread, c-man says Blondie was on lead guitar and Ed on bass for the MIC Rhonda, which was from 1972, so unless they changed the arrangement over the course of a year, it probably stayed the same.

Really, knowing what Ed Carter played lead guitar on would help with knowing if Carl played any bass the most, but considering the guy has one whole interview on file for  his entire life...

Thanks for reminding me of that thread (and the info with in it.  I've been under the weather lately (and starting a new job) but I plan to start compiling a spreadsheet for the album and blocking out the instrumentation and that stuff will definitely come in handy.

I actually already made a Google Doc for that. It's pretty bare so far, but I guess this would be the easiest way for people to add things to it.

I've never tried something like this before, so hopefully everyone can access it.

Great job!  Should Daryl Dragon be added to the '72 recordings?  I think it's been established that he played those shows even though he isn't lited in the credits.

Sounds to me like Mike says, "Oh Billy" & Dennis says, "Billy Hinsche."  I seriously doubt that's Dennis on the electric piano. Sounds very much like Billy's keyboard style, especially when you here the other live recordings of "Rhonda" during that time.  They all sound like Billy to me.
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surf's Up Alternate Track Order on: July 18, 2014, 07:18:28 AM
The first Beach Boys album I ever bought after 20 Golden Greats was a cassette of Surf's Up.  It's  produced in England by EMI and the running order of the tracks is:

Side One: Don;t Go Near the Water; A Day in the Life of a Tree; 'Til I Die; Take a Load off Your Feet; Student Demonstration Time; Looking' at Tomorrow
Side Two: Feel Flows; Long Pormised Road; Disney Girls; Surf's Up.

I was surprised to find when I joined the forum that this it isn't the standard order.  Does anyone know what led to this re-ordering and if this is a bootleg or what?

It wasn't unusual for the record companies to rearrange the track orders on cassettes & 8-tracks, in order to make the sides or programs of near equal length, as mentioned above by unreleased backgrounds.  It also saved them money on the amount of tape used in the shell, which could be significant on duplication runs in the millions of units.  Sometimes the artists were consulted on the revised track order, but the record companies always had the final say since it's all about the profit margin for them.
85  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Reverberation 1969 on: July 09, 2014, 02:39:44 PM
Here's an album that I think would have done well as Reverberation (last Capitol album):

Side A
1- San Miguel
2- Forever
3- Got to Know the Woman
4- Deirdre
5- Celebrate the News

Side B
1- Loop De Loop
2- All I Wanna Do
3- Break Away
4- Slip on Through
5- I'm Going Your Way

I think that's a nice flow.  Pretty Dennis-heavy, I know, but that's not such a bad thing, eh?  San Miguel could have been a single & Break Away would have been a bigger hit in the US.  Just my 2 cents.
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Studios used during the Capitol era. on: July 03, 2014, 11:04:40 AM
These figures aren't as accurate as those for overall gigs, mostly because purely vocal sessions are - obviously - not documented with an AFM contract. That said, it's a pretty good indication (say, ±5%) of how many sessions the band did 1961-69... and where. These are exclusively for Beach Boys sessions:

Western - 135
home studio - 95
Columbia - 45
Gold Star - 26
Sunset Sound -  19
Capitol - 15
Wally Heider - 15
Sound Recorders - 11
ID Sound - 10
Valentine - 4
World-Pacific - 2
Radio Recorders - 2
RCA - 2
Capitol NYC - 2
Conway - 1
Colombia Nashville TN - 1
Bell Sound NYC - 1

I'm absolutely fascinated by this kind of stuff.
Not sure if that's good or bad.
Either way, thank you very much!

According to AZ Lyrics http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/beachboys/palisadespark.html, Carl is saying, "Those coconuts are bad in the ass damn."  I'm sure that's it!
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: May 23, 2014, 01:41:15 PM
I've often wondered this when listening to live recordings, when the band mentions the Surf's Up album and a huge crowd response sounds, do they really know the 1971 Surf's Up album and are cheering for it or are they assuming it's an early Beach Boys album since the word "surf" is in the title and they think it's gonna be Surfin USA or Catch a Wave or something? I know the Surfs Up album did do fairly well, but I've just often wondered that.

Example, the response Carl gets when he announces the song he's singing is from Surf's Up- http://youtu.be/Mdg2MEpvqXY

The audiences at the small clubs that Carl played at during his solo tour was made up of die hard fans.  I'm guessing, at least in the case of this tour, the audience knew the Surf's Up album quite well.  They even knew Billy Hinsche, as you can hear them yelling out Billy's name BEFORE Carl introduces him at this particular show & at the Bottom Line show that took place around the same time.

Personally, I don't see any bragging here.  While I'd love to here this stuff & probably won't get to in the near future, I also like to stay informed about what's out there with the hope that I might one day get access to it.
91  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which version of Big Sur do you prefer? on: March 28, 2014, 07:16:37 AM
I like Holland version better. The Landlocked version sounds like a Folgers coffee commercial  to me.

Spot on.  Never thought of that, but I completely agree.
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which version of Big Sur do you prefer? on: March 27, 2014, 08:31:35 AM
Please put me down for the Holland version.  The harmonica, acoustic guitar, & steel guitar add an appropriate feel, imo.  It goes well with "(On My Way to Sunny) California."  I don't hate the 4/4, just find it a bit syrupy.

It's definitely gotta be "Smart Girls", hands down. That song is the embodiment of every rock fan's stereotype of what they think rap music is but actually isn't. Quite rightly, it's a complete and total embarrassment.

... except that it remains resolutely unreleased.

Can we all agree that "Smart Girls" is THE song that would never see official release by the powers-that-be, even if hell froze over?  I think we'd see "Teardrops On My Bed" get official release before "Smart Girls".

"Battle Hymn of the Republic" has them all beat.

When the Brian Wilson site 1st came on line I asked a question about SMILE boots...Wondering weather BW had any participation  in leaking the smile stuff..Like being apart of it because of his resentment  for BB not liking it..WELL.. We all know better now but 14 yrs ago it wasn't common knowledge.. Well I asked the question and got jumped on by Melinda about that and I was sure the bootleg police were comin to my door.. LOL..! True story..

Melinda was pretty active on the boards back then.
And often unkind to anyone posting anything hinting toward something negative about Brian in any way, shape, or form.
