Thanks for the 1983 concert footage! Very fascinating although the concert itself is kind of lame compared to their Knebworth performance from only three years back. It's strange to see two drummers on stage. As a musician, was DW that unreliable by this point? Brian appears to be in decent shape here, which is nice. Not a big fan of Carl's rock songs.
Yes. I saw a show on Labor Day weekend of '83 where Dennis wasn't even there. Mike explained during the show that there was a problem with their plane to New Jersey & the band had to borrow Willie Nelson's private jet to get to the gig. There wasn't enough room for the whole band so Dennis was one of the odd men out (as was Brian). Kowalski was a necessary part of the touring band during those years.

The boot of Carry Me Home, along with some other booted songs, such as the Shortnin' Bread track, the Good Timin' track, Battle Hymn of the Republic, & a few others, sound to me like they were Dolby encoded (possibly with Dolby SR) & then transferred from a 1/4 inch machine without Dolby decoding. Perhaps the booters forgot to flip a switch before transferring this stuff, or had no Dolby noise reduction units available. Anyway, here's hoping we'll get to hear Carry Me Home in decent fidelity for MIC. Something tells me we won't get both Carry Me Home AND WIBNTLA. Probably one or the other & the one would likely be WIBNTLA. Just my thoughts.

Once again, I'm respectfully agreeing to respectfully disagree with most of the respectful people on this respectful board.
1- Sail on Sailor - best BB song ever. EVER! Blondie nailed (& continues to nail) it. 2- California - quintessential Beach Boys, with a country rock twist. 3- Funky Pretty - Brian writes a pretty neat song during a weird period of his life. 4- Steamboat - chugging rhythm with an amazing steel guitar break. Not crazy about Rieley's lyrics, though. 5- The Trader - again, lyrics do very little for me, but Carl's performance / production save it. 6- Only With You - amazing ballad from Dennis. Showcases Carl's voice. 7- Leaving This Town - love Blondie's vocal & Ricky's moog solo is cool & spacey. 8- Big Sur - this waltz version is WAY better than the syrupy 4/4, sorry. 9- The Beaks of Eagles - love Al's music & singing here, but Mike's narration is annoying & pretentious. 10- Mt. Vernon & Fairway - it doesn't deserve to be included on a 2 sided EP, but there's some nice music here. Like the GV boxed set version.
For the record, I enjoy reading these lists. Keep 'em coming.

I wonder what happened to those Carnegie Hall 1972 tapes. Would be a stunning live release.
I think a full release of the Carnegie Hall performances would be a great idea. We respectfully agree to respectfully disagree. From what was said – what, a couple of years back? – this may well be more a case of "when" than "if". If, then I hope 'Wonderbill' will be omitted. That abomination is capable of turning what would otherwise be an excellent box set into a nightmare, for yours truly. Nah then, me n' thee see eye to eye on many things, but I love Wonderbill. It was a good sign of the times, and the times was good. I hope they omit nothing. Agree. I think "Wonderbill" is one of the highlights of that show. I respectfully disagree. That chimera of a song makes a transition from the sublime to the atrociously plodding. I agree, the two songs don't fit at all. The medley also shows that the flame members didn't fit that well into the BBs.

I don't like this album nearly as much as most of the folks on this board. Loved it when it first came out, but very little has stood the test of time for me.
1) Ding Dang - so bizarre, you have to love it. As others have said, it's too short. 2) Good Time - also rather bizarre. Didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me over the years.
Everything else doesn't cut it for me. Sorry! Let's just agree to disagree.

Sometimes it takes a bit for the obvious to slap me in the face: if SWD engineered it, it can't date from later than fall 1971, because that was when he left the BB's employ. Ergo the 1972 date for writing has to be inaccurate.
Or, perhaps SWD didn't engineer "Out in the Country," even though Mr. Goldberg claims so. There certainly are some inaccuracies here.

C-man's post in this thread is pretty interesting: A full-on track was cut for this, too, at the same session as "Marcella" and something called "Body Talk". Musicians present were Tandyn Almer, Ricky Fataar, Bruce Johnston, Tony Martin Jr., Brian Wilson, and Carl Wilson. A few days later, banjo & strings (arranged by Tandyn Almer) were overdubbed. Shame that version hasn't leaked out. Don't know if it has vocals or not. C-man also mentions that Doug Dillard played the banjo overdubs. Looks like that version now HAS leaked out, with vocals by Goldberg. The plot thickens. This is sounding more & more legit to me.

Mr. Goldberg state in the video that "Sweet and Bitter" was recorded just after the Sunflower sessions. AGD's site has a Mike Love session with unknown title for 10/28/70, which would fit this time period. Could that be it?
He also states that "Out in the Country" is from the Surf's Up / Holland era. That would be a pretty long era: 4/71 through 12/72! Since David Sandler seems to be involved in that track, perhaps this could be from the Wilson / Sandler sessions from Feb. through April of '72? Ricky Fataar & Tandyn Almer are reportedly on there as well, so probably not pre 1972.
Who knows?

I think the conga player is Robert Kenyatta. My question is, who's the percussionist holding the sticks to the left of Ricky? At this time it was usually Kowalski who played percussion & sat at the kit when Ricky moved to steel guitar, guitar, or flute. But that doesn't look like Kowalski.
