Maybe we covered this sometime back, but...I was listening to the instrumental rough mixes of "Good Timin'" that float around, and from those somewhat low-quality sources, the harpsichord sounds like an electric, especially on the note decays...consensus?
I agree about the decay. Still not convinced either way though, as the quality of the boot I have is rather poor, so it's really hard to tell. My guess is electric.

OK, so I'm reading the interview, and the very first response makes the eyebrows go up about a foot. In response to being asked how he "first came to the band's attention", he stated "I did a documentary for radio called The Rise And Fall Of The Beach Boys at the beginning of the 70s". Now, I was the very first person to interview him about the BB in summer 1982, and when I asked pretty much the same question, no mention of any such doc. Has anyone here ever heard about it ? Thought not.
There are further 'problems' with some of his other answers...
I'm guessing that radio documentary only exists in his head.

Anybody wish, the 1974 song "Wishing You Were Here" by Chicago could have somehow been put on here? I do. Yes, I know it's a Chicago song -- but Al, Denny and Carl's vocals totally make that song. They ARE the song. It's just sublime. It's a song that really shows how fking GOOD the Beach Boys were. It puts a giant exclamation point on what could have been ...the wasted years of the mid-70s. I implore everyone to go seek this song out immediately if you don't have it. It's on Chicago VII. The title, lyrics and the Boy's vocals are so painfully poignant on the fact that the Beach Boys and/or Brian Wilson WEREN'T there. Wishing You Were Here. I'd like to hear the background vocal track(s) isolated. But that would be even more unlikely than having a song from a different band on the box set.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Blondie Chaplin to Guest with BW on Some Dates

From Blondie's Facebook page: Blondie Chaplin is pleased to officially announce that he has been invited by Brian Wilson to guest on several dates on Brian's new tour including opening night in Florida, and dates in New York City, Montclair NJ, Las Vegas, LA & Oakland. This great news! Can you convince Blondie to perform October 3 in St Augustine? Thanks! Will do!

For me, the song even exceeded it's expectations. I'd like to hear the guitar a bit hotter in the mix during the instrumental break, but that's no biggie. And yes, there are a few minor clicks & pops in there. The "noodling" at the end is awesome. These are exciting times!

What's with the weird filter effect on the piano? Is that on the bootleg?
It's actually more prominent on the bootleg. At least the copy I have. Sounds like digital artifacts from too much noise reduction. I'm guessing the early boots of this show were circulated on cassette & gathered some tape hiss over the generations. When these things began to circulate digitally, people tried to reduce the hiss, sometimes overdoing it. Anyway, this version sounds quite good to me, compared to what I'm used to.

The Beginning of the End is presumably owned by Capitol. Thank Him is owned by Brian; he has had the acetate for several years now.
Brian, who remembers the other person on the recording to be Carl, has a copy on cassette. And his copy happens to be exactly one generation worse than mine. *cough* Please turn your head before coughing.

Is it possible that Billy played the piano solo on 11/19/72 at Capitol Theater, NJ & Daryl played the piano solo on 11/23/72 at Carnegie Hall, NY? I guess not all that unusual, considering 3 different vocalists were rotating the lead on various nights. I believe the "In Concert" version was recorded 8/19/73 at Nassau Coliseum, NY with Billy on "electric" piano solo, followed by a guitar solo (Blondie?)

Out in the Country > A Day in the Life of a Tree
These do sound similar with the organ part, but I think "Tree" came first. I could be wrong. This thread seems to have been derailed as we're no longer talking about MiC Tracks, but any tracks that evolved into other tracks. An interesting idea for it's own thread, imo.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When were the Beach Boys at their best in concert?

Generally, 1966-1975. I start with '66 because I think the Michigan shows were a step up from anything done live before that period. I'm only going by what's been booted, as my first time seeing the band was '73. I end with '75 because the Beachago tour from that year was quite good, imo. Especially the encores with both bands playing together.
Specifically, 1972-1973. The Blondie / Ricky years were the best for live shows. I've seen the band live 9 times between 1973 - 1989 & the first concert was the best. Here's my breakdown (as if anyone cares):
12/16/73 grade = A (Blondie & Ricky both in the band) 8/23/74 grade = B+ (Ricky but no Blondie) 11/21/74 grade = B (Billy sings "I'm Waiting for the Day") 6/14/75 grade = B+ (first Beachago tour) 8/28/75 grade = C+ (nothing special here) 11/25/76 grade = B- (Brian's back) 9/4/83 grade = C (Mike sings "Imagine") 6/1/84 grade = C+ (Carl sings "Heaven") 6/23/89 grade = B- (2nd Beachago tour)
A nod to the '93 unplugged show & last year's tour (going by recordings I've heard). Also a nod to BW Pet Sounds Tour (A-) & Smile tour (from hearing recordings).

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Charles Lloyd, Waves & TM
|

Jazz flautist Charles Lloyd worked on-stage and in the studio with The Beach Boys in the early '70's. I believe that is him fluttering midst the - dare I say it - psychedelic wash of Feel Flows. The Boys seem to have returned the favor by appearing on two cuts of his Waves lp - on TM and on Rishikesh. I don't have the credits handy but if I had to guess I'd say TM is a co-composition. It is, at any rate, a gem, far superior to the album closer on Friends and, I think, well deserving a place in the canon. I don't know for sure if it was ever performed live. I think it might have been, at CW Post in '73 - but memory is uncertain. I do know that Mike refers to it at the Carnegie Hall 72 show. Anyway, here's the link to a truly great, unjustifiably neglected performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_xpxNnlqHEAlways wondered if there was a place where you could legally purchase & download the TM track or the Waves LP. This version has pretty poor sound quality. I've searched, but it appears to be out of print.

I have no idea who the guitarist is, but he does resemble one of the Cate Brothers. When I saw the BB in September of '74 at the Nassau Colessium, the Cate brothers were the opening act. One of the Cate brothers later replaced Robbie Robertson in the re-formed Band. Again I have no idea. Just throwing it out there.
