151  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: To have a complete SMiLE collection (as of 9-1-11) *UPDATE to session inventory\ on: October 10, 2011, 12:55:50 PM
I think it would be nice if we can make a list of all the essential Smile tracks/recordings/mixes we already have, but aren't present on the new box set. People can compile that list from their own collection and then have all the essential Smile tracks on two sets: one official and one 'extra'.
152  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: October 10, 2011, 12:42:30 PM
I find it interesting that "Surf's Up" and "Well, Your Welcome" (sic) are on the same reel.  It does lend a bit of credibility to the theory that "You're Welcome" may have been envisioned as a sort of coda to a Surf's Up finale.

It might be due to the fact that both songs were recorded on the same day...15 December I thought.

I'd really like to have a pm as well please! Thanks in advance.

Trying to compile a list of SMiLE songs that have been or have never been available in stereo/mono not including the upcoming set. Let me know if this is correct:

Mono:
01. Our Prayer: Yes (GV box set)
02. Gee: Yes (GV box set)
03. Heroes And Villains: Yes (various)
04. Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock): Yes (GV box set)
05. I’m In Great Shape: Kinda (mono "vocal" on Endless Harmony. Other section I believe hasn't)
06. Barnyard: Kinda (mono "vocal" on Endless Harmony. Other parts have on boots).
07. My Only Sunshine (The Old Master Painter / You Are My
Sunshine): Yes? (Can never tell if the boot is in stereo or if it's just in terrible quality  LOL) - This is indeed a mono mix with the vocal overdub.
08. Cabin Essence: No
09. Wonderful: Yes (GV: box set)
10. Look (Song For Children): Think there's a boot that has one but not sure. - Yes, available on Vigotone Smile (but listed as Holidays).
11. Child Is Father Of The Man: Yes on boots.
12. Surf’s Up: With the exception of the demo vocal, no.
13. I Wanna Be Around / Workshop: No - Actually it is availalbe in mono, on Vigotone Smile (even longer than the stere version)
14. Vega-Tables: Yes (GV box set) - And part 2 and part 3 mono mixes on UM 17
15. Holidays: Yes albeit in bad quality on box set. - Yes, on Vigotone listed as Tones (Tune X)
16. Wind Chimes: Yes (GV box set)
17. The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow): Some boots have mono mixes. - Yes, mono mix with fire sound effects (best quality on UM 17)
18. Love To Say Dada: Yes (GV box set) - And for the Water Chant, there seems to be a very bad quality mono mix on Secret Smile. It might be just a fold down of a stere mix/version though.
19. Good Vibrations: Yes (various)

Stereo:
01. Our Prayer: Yes (20/20 with later overdub)
02. Gee: Think so. I know it sounded in true stereo on PC's mix. - Yes, Archaeology track 24 I believe.
03. Heroes And Villains: Yes (Hawthorne, CA) - And the Cantina, Prelude to fade and some other sections as well (mostly on Archaeology)
04. Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock): Yes (various boots have stereo sections) - Verse in stereo on UM 17, the rest of the track in stereo (mostly stereo vocals) on UM 16.
05. I’m In Great Shape: Kinda. Tracking session booted is in stereo I believe.
06. Barnyard: No
07. My Only Sunshine (The Old Master Painter / You Are My
Sunshine): Again, can't tell - Very good quality instrumental version on UM 16
08. Cabin Essence: Yes (With various overdubs on 20/20)
09. Wonderful: Not the harpsichord version.
10. Look (Song For Children): Yes. Most boots have stereo sections - Complete stereo on UM 17 (take 20)
11. Child Is Father Of The Man: Yes. Most boots have stereo sections - Yes but not of the sections used in the mono mixes.
12. Surf’s Up: Yes (Surf's Up) - (And the backing track on the Box Set)
13. I Wanna Be Around / Workshop: Yes. Boots always seem to have this in stereo.
14. Vega-Tables: Yes (various boots) - Yes, but of the verse there are only stereo version missing some overdubs (the bass I believe). Of part 2 and 3 are stereo mixes as well, but those seem to be not finished stereo mixes, just the sessions with the vocal OD in stereo (also including some studio chatter in part 3)
15. Holidays: No but some fake stereo versions are out there.
16. Wind Chimes: Yes (various boots) - Complete stereo version on UM 16, fading into a stereo version of...
17. The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow): Yes (various boots) - Stereo on UM 16, but not including the ending part included in the apparently finished mono mix.
18. Love To Say Dada: Yes (One boot has this in bad quality) - Stereo on Secret Smile. And for the Water Chant, it is in stereo on UM 16 but with a track fading out at the start and one fading in a the end. This seems to be the best, finished stereo mix though. There is another one on UM 17, calles "Stereo Mix", which sounds like a mix as well, because it sounds different to the Vocal Overdub stereo tracks.
19. Good Vibrations: Technically impossible  LOL

Let me know if there's anything wrong

Great idea! I've added some info in the quote itself.
155  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The correct Vega-Tables song structure. What was/is it? on: October 08, 2011, 12:10:38 AM
OK, next track: With Me Tonight. First of all: when was it recorded? The only track on the Smile box "You're With Me Tonight", seems to be recorded during SMiley SMile so that may be the Smiley version. Is the track represented elsewhere? There are three versions we know of, the slow, the fast, and the Hawthorne, CA version. Was it originally intended for another song, or was it a track itself?
156  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The correct Vega-Tables song structure. What was/is it? on: October 06, 2011, 07:35:27 AM
In the meantime I took a look at all the Vega-Tables mixes again, and now I think the new mix might be very close the the 'original' structure. It seems quite logical: a second Do a Lot after the second verse, the bridge before the fade, and the fade closing the track. The only thing that seems a bit superfluous to me is the vocal "I know that you'll feel better", without it the track sounds more structured and coherent to me. But if you want to include all the pieces recorded, the new mix is possibly the only logical way to do it.
157  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: To have a complete SMiLE collection (as of 9-1-11) on: October 06, 2011, 07:15:30 AM
Hi The Real Beach Boy, is everything from the actual BBOV tracklist in your list, or everything from the 12 CD "The Smile Sessions" tracklist earlier in the thread? I think the latter is a more complete.
Thanks,
Paul
158  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The correct Vega-Tables song structure. What was/is it? on: October 05, 2011, 01:56:38 PM
We can use this thread to discuss the original song structures of any Smile song. What do you think of Child Is Father Of The Man? There are two vocal mix structures, but also a instrumental mono mix. I think the instrumental  mix is the closest to the original structure. The only problem with it is that BWPS uses a different structure. But the piano part (bridge, which strats of the vocal versions) is at the end of the song, just like in the instrumentla mono mix.

And to add a question: what is known by now of the new included on disc 1 of the 2cd/Boxset?

The new mix differs quite a bit from the versions we knew till a month ago, even from BWPS. I think there are two possible reasons for this: or they tried to use as many pieces as possible in the new mix, or they have found some historical evidence for this new structure. I hope the latter is the case, as I think the reconstructed album should be as historically accurate as possible.
161  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The correct Vega-Tables song structure. What was/is it? on: October 03, 2011, 12:09:17 PM
I think the new version is too complicated to be the correct order from April 1967. And wasn't the Smiley Smile vocal part recorded during Smiley Smile? I think that could mean it wasn't orignally intended to be included.
162  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The correct Vega-Tables song structure. What was/is it? on: October 03, 2011, 11:23:20 AM
The only problem with the early Mark Linnett mix is that the "I know that you'll feel better" verse isn't present. The vocal is present on the double vocal part, so maybe they would cut it out later (including seperating the two vocals) and put it between the last two do a lot sections.
163  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The correct Vega-Tables song structure. What was/is it? on: October 03, 2011, 09:27:14 AM
Hi everyone. I think the Smile track with the most uncertain structure is Vega-Tables. I want to give it a try and find out what structure Brian Wilson would have used in the 60's. Here's the versions we know of:

The Smile Sessions: Verse - Do a lot (fast) - Verse (backing vocals, I threw away my candy bar...) - Do a lot (slow)  - Smiley Smile vocal part - Verse (I know that you'll feel better when...) - Bridge (Piano+vocals) - Fade (Part 3)

Good Vibrations Box Set: Verse - Do a lot (piano)- Verse (backing vocals, I threw away my candy bar...) -Bridge (Piano+vocals) - Verse (I know that you'll feel better when...) - Do a lot (slow) - Fade (Part 3)

Vigotone (early Mark Linnett mono mix?): Verse - Do a lot (piano)- Verse (backing vocals, I threw away my candy bar...) - Do a lot (piano) - Do a lot (slow)

The last mix seems to be cut from the Arpil assembly tapes which are on Secret Smile, it's exactly the same parts in the same order. Do you think the fact that the piano Do a lot appears on all sessions tapes makes clear it was going to be used? I think that the inclusion of the slow Do a lot on the April assembly track could mean it was going to be used as well. And do you think the 2 mix rehearsal tracks on UM 17 say something about the song strucure?

164  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: judging from the tracklist what will make u smile from the Smile Sessions on: September 17, 2011, 12:15:00 PM
Barnshine can be found on Secret Smile and from a different (clearer vocal) source on Project Smile. Hope that helps!
165  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: September 16, 2011, 03:29:01 AM
The mixes of HAV and SU sound a bit like Mok's version to me.

Track 28 (Archaeology) has a slight variation at the end ("it's dum") but otherwise track 27 and 28 are only sound quality upgrades over the Parts 1&2. Maybe that scounts as two parts of sessions, otherwise I am missing something.
48. H&V Tag (alternate vox)   - I didn't find this one.

Tomorrow I'll try to complete disc 2.
Thanks for helping,
Paul

My first attempt at disc 1. It is by no means complete, there are some tracks listed that I couldn´t find with a quick search. Please participate and make the list complete! Hi JohnMill, unfortunately I wouldn't know whether that track is only to be found on that bootleg: I only have disc 4.

On topic again; I know that document, it was online at the Smile Shop web page.
Does anyone know how up to date the BBOV tracklist was? To my knowledge it was pretty much complete. I can try to post the tracklist (one disc at a time) and the source for each track listed. Anyone will be free to add related tracks, suggest different sources and discuss it.
170  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: To have a complete SMiLE collection (as of 9-1-11) on: September 01, 2011, 12:20:46 PM
The False barnyard lyrics are on Secret Smile as well, and possibly in better quality on Project Smile.
I would  be interested in such a "Smile complete" project, a bit like Purple Chick's Beatles Deluxe Editions. We could try and make a list. I once compared the BBOV list with my collection and I could find almost every track, with two or three exceptions. And there were a few tracks I had, but weren't on the list.
171  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: To have a complete SMiLE collection (as of 9-1-11) on: September 01, 2011, 01:35:42 AM
I did some research and looked at all my bootlegs and I think I may have a complete Smile collection by now. This is what I have:

Best Unsurpassed Masters (CD 4) - Unique Vega-Tables (and maybe Good Vibrations) mixes.
Heroes And Vibrations
Smile 1988 Mark Linet Rough Mixes - I think this one doesn't have any core tracks on it, just noise reduced Vigotone mixes
UM 15 - GV Sessions
UM 16 - Smile - For some stereo tracks - DYLW, TOMP, HGS, WF, CIFOTM, Look take 3, IWBA, WC/MOLC/Water Chant
UM 17 - Smile Sessions
UM 18 - Smiley Smile
Heroes And Villains Sessions Parts 1 & 2 - Some unique sessions/other parts
Heroes And Villains Sessions - Vol. 2 - This one seems to be available mp3 sourced only. I have found a flac version, but that seems to be mp3 sourced as well. However, the mp3 and flac discs are different in mastering, so both are needed for a core collection I think.
Psychedeic Sounds - Includes IIGS and All Day sessions (mp3 sourced)
Secret Smile - Various core tracks, Cabin Essence sessions, rough mixes, and upgrades for some Archaeology tracks.
Archaeology - Some unique tracks, like stereo HAV outtakes
Smile (Odeon) - Probably nothing special on this, only some alternate mixes made by the bootleg label itself I think.
Smile (Vigotone) 1st version. - I found two versions of this, and "version 1" seems to be the best source.
Smile Sessions (Sea Of Tunes Source Tape) - Again, some unique sessions/tracks.
Project Smile - For some small bits I don't have anywhere else.

And for official releases, you need:

Smiley Smile/Wild Honey
Friends/20/20
Sunflower/Surf's Up
Good Vibrations CD Single
Good Vibrations Box Set
Pet Sounds Sessions Box Set (for GV)
Hawthorne, CA (Stereo mixes/GV/With Me Tonight)
Endless Harmony (Good quality HAV/IIGS/Barnyard demo)

I think this seems to be all, if I missed something, please add it to the list!
Paul

Thanlks for your answer. I misread the date as well - I think the Water Chant was recorded in April/May 1967.
173  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 28, 2011, 12:25:14 AM
Do you think

22. Psycodelic Sounds - Underwater Chant 11/4/66 (Bonus Track)

is the Water Chant? Otherwise that segment wouldn't be anywhere on the box set...
174  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 26, 2011, 01:05:10 PM
I think those are dummy LP's. Even the 45 rpm's have banding. I hope we get a press release and a (possibly detailed) tracklist soon!

I'd be very happy with just all the know tracks in the best quality, and some simple mixes. For example, Look given a fade-out and a clean mix of the Water Chant. I hope they that they include some clean mixes of the tracks and parts used in the Smile mix on disc 1. Otherwise we would have various tracks in best quality but faded in, and out. If they include a mix of CIFOTM on disc 1 (like BWPS), they should incude the rough mixes and parts on the other 3 discs.
