26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 90 mins. with The Beach Boys - Dennis Wilson commentary on: January 30, 2015, 03:43:04 PM
Pretty sure it's from 1977 and perhaps broadcast a little later outside the US. It's vaguely familiar and if I have heard before it's on one of a bunch of cassette tapes I received from an infrequent poster here in 1979 or 1980.

You`re So Good to Me was performed throughout 2008 I believe including at the lengthy British shows (where Here Today and Good to My Baby were also heard).

I remember "Here Today" was played (and sounded fantastic!) with the Australian Symphony Orchestra at the Melbourne show I went to in late 2010 (I think it was)

Early 2010. I was there too. Great show.

The fact that Mike lost that lawsuit over a disc that was labeled as "the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson" would mean he's allowed to release an album under "the Beach Boys' Mike Love," so he would be permitted to mention that association in some way.  That Daily Mail Brian Wilson CD also included photos of the original Beach Boys on the cover, including Mike.  So, presumably Mike is legally allowed to include photos of the original Beach Boys on any CD cover, including pictures of Brian. Even without Brian being on the recording or Brian's permission.

Jurisdictional issues aside, in the highly unlikely event of a court case your scenario would be decided on its merits.

My guess is that if (and that's a big if) an album was to be released as The Beach Boys sans involvement from Brian and Alan then it would be all signed off in advance.

Just wanted to put Christians side of the story out there that's all.  He was subjected to some crappy internal politics which is truly a shame.  I agree with the earlier post about the vocal blend being better with Christian in the touring band.  Christian certainly had some similar tonalities to Carl.  In my opinion his talents were under utilized.  The few times I heard him sing lead on God Only Knows before they started piping in Carl were nothing short of amazing.  Quite honestly his lead vocal really put Bruce's to shame.  There is a video somewhere on YouTube from 2011 and it is awesome.

Having heard Christian in an off-stage setting his voice to my ears at least is more Dennis circa 1970 than Carl at any time.

As for being "subjected to some crappy internal politics" it's still a gig most musicians would walk across broken glass for.

The charges relating to trying to procure a murder have been dropped.
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Phil Rudd and Dennis on: December 29, 2014, 03:07:22 PM
I don't know how much media attention Phil Rudd has been getting overseas with his recent troubles but here at least it's fairly big news. He's lived in the same town as me for more than 25 years and is not a big deal to anyone, apart from high-end car dealers and those involved in a particular 'profession'.  When I see him around I often think of Dennis especially when I see Rudd cruising with a blonde in some expensive car or hanging out in a burger bar or something with several young ladies. The last few months of his life appears to publically spiralling out of control. I'm not implying for a moment that Dennis was involved with any illegal activity but in Rudd we have a very talented musician who is estranged from his band who are clearly exasperated by his on-going behaviour. Rudd has his 'hangers-on' some very well meaning and trying everything to help the guy  and others merely along for the ride.

By all accounts Dennis was very strong willed and nobody could help him until he wanted to help himself. What do you do with guys like Dennis and Phil? Clearly cutting off or reducing Dennis' money supply didn't work but then throwing money at the problem might have amplified the problem. Perhaps with Dennis it was simply his time to go. Regardless, for a mere mortal like myself, seeing guys like Dennis and Phil, so ridiculously talented, extremely wealthy (in Phil's case at least) and good looking to boot (definitely not the case with Phil) throw it all away beggars belief. So sad.

filledeplage -
this video tribute was created by Randy a longtime road crew member & friend of Mike's.
The first segment of photo's were from his collection. All the newer photo's and video's were taken by me (except for 1 or 2 of Wojo's)
I filmed the last two shows  Mike ever played with the Endless Summer Band at Ridgefield Ct. and W. Hampton Ny. 7-28-2007.
Mike's wife Jane even sent me one of his BB tour jackets the next year after Mike's  passing.  Al knows I have it also, it hangs in my closet as a rememberance of a dear friend.  I couldn't even begin to tell you all I know .. most good and some bad but regardless I have the memories forever.

Hope you enjoy going to see Love's shows but  in my opinon it all ended when Carl died & Al left.
Today I enjoy seeing the other BB spin-off bands. ie. Surf City Allstars, Cal.Surf Inc, & of course Al's band.

Oh by the way California Surf band with original band members is booked in Ct. next May. I am told that other bookings may happen around New England in that time frame. Hope to see you there.

(this is my one and only post of the year )

Thanks Surf Patrol, very moving and a wonderful tribute to a heck of a nice guy. Tremendously talented too. I spent a little time with Mike. First post show Sydney Australia in 1998. A small group of us spent several hours in a pub (apparently he enjoyed visiting different pubs) and he regaled us with many tales never once saying a bad word about anyone. A few months later he was in New Zealand and really went out of his way to make my whole family welcome. In hindsight I wonder if he knew his time with the band was running out. Beats me. regardless, way too young for such a kind and gentle person.

Song?  I only get to pick one? Shocked

That's no fair my friend. Wink

I'm allowing you to pick more than 1

Well, right this moment, it's the original of Let Him Run Wild.
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The BB fanbase's reaction to Kokomo's success at the time in 1988 on: December 12, 2014, 10:51:38 PM
As a fan of 16 or 17 years at that time I was thrilled to pieces. I got so many comments from friends and acquaintances who knew of my fandom. All very positive. Kokomo is a radio friendly song and plainly the general public lapped it up.

I ran into Mike in December that year and he kept asking me how Kokomo was doing in New Zealand and Australia.

I have to say I'm from a period of BB fandom when you had to dig for stuff and do research. Now people think they are entitled to be spoon-fed whatever they want. I also walked five miles in the snow to school.
Not a record. I used to walk even more. Anyway, let's not take this 1 step forward, okay? So, you had to dig for stuff & do research. Fine. But this is new Millennium, with quick access to anything. It's a snobbish attitude if the older generation starts blaming the younger for being born in this time frame. But I'll tell you a secret: we are all in equal position, we like the BBs, doesn't matter young or old fans. So what does it take to share the interview with everyone who reads this board?

A PM usually does wonders.  Smiley
I did message kiwi surfer, in the nicest way, as I usually do. Only *then* I asked it here. No difference, as it appears.

Well if he's "selective" and/or asked not to share it - then perhaps he oughtn't create a thread about it.
Exactly! Thank you very much, sir!

Let me get this right. Before starting any thread relating to any unreleased material, no matter how inconsequential or the context, one must have the ability and be willing to immediately reproduce for all and sundry no matter how unwashed they may be. The mind boggles.
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2014 on: November 30, 2014, 02:46:45 PM
Considering he got the most applause by far, probably justified.

So it comes down to some kind of clap-o-meter device now? No wonder another full reunion is unlikely. I wouldn't want to be party to such nonsense either.

Why on earth not?

I don't mind being bugged, it's the sense of entitlement that annoys.

What's a "level playing field"? Mike writing all the songs with BW and telling Melinda to take a hike? Roll Eyes It's never enough for Mike without extreme control and using BW as a human cash cow.

That's a way too simplistic observation and in reference to the "cash cow" quip without merit.

Sometimes it hits me how sad and low it is that Mike is touring as "The Beach Boys" while Brian, Alan and David are all standing and performing. So sad.

There's much to be sad about in the world, especially if you are a glass half empty type, but Mike and Bruce touring as The Beach Boys hardly warrants any hand-wringing on our part.

In my opinion Mike as the licence holder would likely be in neglect of his duty if he did not actively pursue bookings.

I'd say to this the same as I would any hobby/interest, etc. None of this matters as it pertains to life, or the world itself. But if one takes time in their life for hand-wringing over anything that isn't actually consequential to life itself, than those who don't like Mike using the name should feel free to hand-wring if they want. It's not any less consequential than any other inter-band drama over the years.

I'd say at this stage of their career it is totally inconsequential how Mike is billed. If this debate had occurred in the 1960's or 1970's then yes it would not have been "any less consequential than any other inter-band drama." But here we are talking about a band heading towards their 55th anniversary with the principals approaching their mid 70s. Individually and collectively they owe me nothing. I'm just thankful I have the opportunity, if I so wish, to hear the surviving principals in one configuration or another.

This is a great book, really well done, the proverbial labor of love.  This book, Brad's "Surf's Up," and Ian's and Jon's "In Concert" books are never far from reach.  Each has contributed enormously to our understanding and appreciation of the band.

Manfred is a friend and a very talented singer/songwriter/musician. He has recorded several CDs of original songs with a clear BW influence. This book grew out of his love of the Beach Boys' music and his appreciation for the beauty and diversity of 45 rpm picture sleeves.  And, like most books, one burning question -- "Gee, I wonder how many Beach Boys' picture sleeves there are?  Not just in Germany, but the entire world." A rather daunting task.  That he accomplished it so exceptionally and had it published so beautifully, and in full color, is quite an achievement. He changed a little niche of BBs collecting.

Manfred would be the first to admit the book could have benefited from a German to English translator/editor. But those are minor points and they lend a certain earnest charm to the book. Besides, if I had to write a book in another language, it would be unintelligible. So, kudos to you, my friend, for fearlessly tackling the nuances and idiosyncrasies of the English language. Sehr gut!

Unfortunately, there will most likely never be a second edition as there are a few additions and corrections that Manfred and Christian kept track of over the years, most notably the world's only Carl Wilson picture sleeve -- "Hold Me" from the Netherlands . . .  or is it Holland?

But, the best thing about the book? It persuaded that bgas guy to stop bidding on international sleeves!

Well said Jim. To counter the bgas development however the book has inspired me to start bidding on international sleeves!

AWK!!  Too Late, Jim has all but three from the book.... ( and I'm not selling them to him anytime soon)

Does Jim really have all but three of the featured sleeves?

I'm pretty sure there's a colour version floating about too.

Bruce a good surfer? You bet. I have seen some very cool photos of Bruce surfing.

This Whole World - The Complete Beach Boys Singles and EP Cover Collection by Manfred Schmidt and Christian Haschke.

I know this book has been mentioned in various threads before so Mods by all means move it elsewhere if you see fit.

I'm ashamed to admit I only recently laid my hands on it and am kicking myself I hadn't done so much earlier. Just love it and it's inspired me to collect as many of those covers as I can. It's renewed my interest in collecting.

Well done Manfred and Christian and a big hello Manfred from your old pen pal.

Hopefully, it will be available sooner than later. Otherwise, no point in creating a topic about interview with no link to that. We shall wait.

That attitude is hardly likely to spur me along.
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: December 1968 interview recording and Christmas greeting. on: November 24, 2014, 04:21:11 PM
I have a recording of an interview with Alan from the reception for the group at the Hilton hotel a few days before the recording of the "Live in London" album.

Can you post a link to this interview, if you've got it in an e-format?

At some point I will make the interview available. I have had number of reel-to-reel tapes for several years one of which was labelled The Beach Boys but until yesterday I had no idea of the contents.

Other artists include Marc Bolan, The Nice, The Hollies, Duncan Browne, Solomon King, The Scaffold, Cliff Richard, Love Sculpture and likely others. The Marc Bolan interview is possibly the most interesting seeing that it was recorded upon the release of Tyrannosaurus Rex’s first single Debora.  Several artists launch into Christmas carols for their "New Zealand fans."  Alas, no Beach Boys effort yet. The Scaffold (recorded in New Zealand) in particular sing an off colour version of "Lily the Pink" which very likely was never broadcast.

I have a recording of an interview with Alan from the reception for the group at the Hilton hotel a few days before the recording of the "Live in London" album. When asked what the Beach Boys will be doing over Christmas Alan replies "we'll be reviewing the live album which we'll be doing this Sunday at the Palladium".  Which puts paid to the notion that the group weren't aware, as Steve Desper claims on page 115 of the Rusten and Stebbins book, that the performance was being recorded.

I thought the story was that everyone was aware that the show on Sunday, December 1 at the London Palladium was to be recorded, but that no one knew that the show on December 8 at Finsbury Park, Astoria was being recorded by EMI.  When the album came out, and it was from EMI's tapes of the Finsbury Park show, the group was not happy.  So Jardine's statement and Desper's statement are not mutually exclusive.

Lee
You're right Lee... If you read Stephen's quotes literally. "We were only there for one night..." They were unaware the Dec 8th show was the concert EMI would use for the LP, as Alan confirms that in the quote Kiwi posted... his, the group's and Stephen's assumption was the Dec 1 show was going to be the album's source.

Ah, I see now.  The comments by Steve Desper and Alan, as noted above, are not mutually exclusive. I had overlooked the 1 December show on the preceding page despite Alan referring to the upcoming Palladium performance in a "couple of days" as being recorded for a live album. This likely dates the interview/reception either on the day of arrival in the UK on the 28th or on the following evening.

Interviewer: "Any chance of Brian ever touring with you again? Alan: "I don't ever foresee that, I'd say he's retired from the road". Interviewer: "Just staying behind and doing all the writing:. Alan: "No, not all the writing as you will see by the next album. The group has contributed 60 to 70% of the material. Brian is working in the capacity of making sure things get done right rather than actually spearheading them, the group is doing much more of the actual effort now of producing and engineering the album."
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: December 1968 interview recording and Christmas greeting. on: November 24, 2014, 12:17:18 AM
I find it easier to believe Desper than Alan. The ML banter of that show was so far out that it would be strange how anyone would want that included on an upcoming live album.

However the interview pre-dates the show (and hence any banter by Mike) and Alan is plainly aware of the intention to record and release the performance.

Alan also talks about the current single (Bluebirds), the upcoming album (20/20), their busy schedule and fields the inevitable Brian questions. All with considerable poise.

Also included is a very cool Christmas greeting from Dennis and another from Bruce.

Anyone familiar with the interview?
50  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cameo Brian appearance in article about being Hollywood Chauffeur on: September 18, 2014, 01:24:04 AM
My former neighbour, an expatriate Californian, on learning I was a Beach Boys fan said he loved the band but disliked Brian Wilson. Naturally I was intrigued and pressed why. Jim it turns out was a frequent flyer in the '70s due to having a girlfriend working for one of the airlines. On one such flight, Chicago or Detroit bound he thinks, Brian was aboard and he quickly became Brian's new best friend. Dinner and other plans were made but shortly before they landed Brian pounced and attempted to strangle him. It took several people to pull Brian off. No explanation was given and Jim swears he did nothing whatsoever to provoke Brian.

I have no reason to disbelieve the story and several other things he told me all stacked up. I asked a couple of times if he was sure it was Brian (and not say Dennis) but he was adamant it was Brian. Jim, a former competitive surfer, grew up in same area and knew Dennis a little from the beach around '65 or so.
