776  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Punk Appreciation Thread on: January 13, 2006, 07:30:07 AM
The fact that a lot of punk songs are still relevant speaks badly for the effect it's had on political values so far. I'd expect that to change in the next 20 years, though. Some things take time.

Yeah, you're probably right as far as the writing thing goes, but I'm sure it can be a factor in some cases.
778  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Van Dyke Parks on TVOntario on January 26 on: January 12, 2006, 10:18:06 AM
Anyone know anything about this? My mom saw an ad for it but I don't know much more beyond this. Mind you, I'm not sure how many people here get TVO...

Oooh, Heroes and Villains is another one! There's the alternate cantina version vs. the single version.

Oh yeah, I've heard of them. I got the Rykodisc reissue of their Vs. album, but it's one of those "buy it, listen to it once" things for me.  Undecided

There are also several official alternate/earlier versions:

Time To Get Alone
Breakaway
Do It Again
Cottonfields
Don't Back Down
Little Honda
The Little Girl I Once Knew
Help Me R(h)onda (3 of these)
Let Him Run Wild
California Saga: California (single mix)
It's Ok (single mix)
Rock and Roll Music (single mix)

I'd say that Queen II and A Night at the Opera are very stylistically diverse, yet cohesive albums. I think the trick is to have the songs written and recorded in the same time-frame so the overall feel and production of the album comes from the same place. I don't know, I think my demo album is pretty 'diverse', even if it's not that stylistically varied. What do you think about that as an example, Josh? I think you've heard my album...

I love me some Buzzcocks (Singles Going Steady, mainly), The Jam (all of it), Sex Pistols (album, Spunk bootleg), Ramones (first 5 albums), The Clash(some, anyway). I also like X and X-Ray Spex.

This stuff sounds really interesting. I'd love to see it someday.

I do remember someone complimenting it to him somewhere and Brian thanking him and saying that he liked it, too. No idea where I heard that, though.

I meant no harm.

I want to see/hear more of the Boys in 1965 doing Today! songs. I have a clip of When I Grow Up from somewhere, and one of the DVDs has them doing Help Me Rhonda and Please Let Me Wonder with Brian there. Are those easy to find?
789  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Music downloading creates listener apathy on: January 11, 2006, 08:38:19 AM
My daughter "roots through" my iPod the same way she would root through a stack of vinyl. Finds cool stuff, listens to it over and over again, just like in previous generations.

Yes, but that is NOW... I'm just wondering if/how people will store their old mp3s in 30 years (or whatever the new technology is). If the iPod/hard drive crashes, you lose it all.
790  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Music downloading creates listener apathy on: January 11, 2006, 07:37:36 AM
Really, all it means is that in 30 years, kids won't be able to root through their parent's music collections and find as many cool LPs and 45s (or even CDs). I guess it remains to be seen how people "hold on" to their music collections if they're purely digital.

Maxine Brown - Oh No Not My Baby

My friend, um, gave me the Girl Groups box as mp3s, so that's what I am listening to.

Nope, it's the wives.
794  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Music downloading creates listener apathy on: January 11, 2006, 06:20:47 AM
I feel like if I own it, I owe it to myself to listen to it and absorb it. This is not always the case, however. I have spent too much money on albums I only listened to once or twice.

From the SWD Thread on the old Smiley board:

WONDERFUL

Baldwin Organ and cellest at first with Carl

Wa Wa Wonderful is wives singing segment

Children, who I think were Carl's (that would be Jonah), were present at the vocal recording and ask to be quite, but the whispers were kept in the mix because of the "party" section

Harmonica

Party like sounds of family gathering, a seperate recording. Audree (mother), Dennis and Brian are named. All the wives and other friends are in the mix. Piano* in background with organ.

Brian at piano*

Na-Na is Brian & Carl

*The piano has a special tuning practiced by some piano tuners who tune studio pianos. It widely detunes the second and third string of the note set.

In Windchimes the "honk" -- do you mean at 1:26, the organ stop in tape echo?

Amazing! Too bad you don't recall the songs, but that's another great story. I admire your ability to work with what you're given and find a way to get the job done.

Man, I love Rock 'n' Roll Radio. Am I nuts, or do I hear a split second of Surfin' USA in the intro?
798  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Smiley Smile on: January 10, 2006, 10:38:54 AM
I really like HGS, myself.

I also really like the women singing "won-won wonderful"... It has a really cool vibe, even if it's kinda creepy.
799  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Friends on: January 10, 2006, 08:53:02 AM
I absolutely love Transcendental Meditation. The saxes are awesome, the feel is jazzy and really unique to the Beach Boys, and Brian's singing is really cool and 'out there'.
