I really like Like a Summer Rain. It's definitely inspired by Don't Worry Baby, melody-wise. Yellow Ballon has a bit of God Only Knows in there, especially at the start.

Well, that doesn't really prove that Carl was worried about replicating it onstage, though he may have been; do we have any other evidence to support this?

Just got this in the mail the other day, along with Save for a Rainy Day, which has multiple versions of the Yellow Balloon song as well.

To those of you who are more familiar with this era, how do you like this stuff? I'm enjoying it.

I love it.

When did they ever perform anything from Smiley Smile, aside from Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains? I could see Carl's point if they subsequently went out and did Whistle In, Little Pad, and With Me Tonight live, but they didn't, did they? Also, I'd love to see them do She's Goin' Bald live!

The Gift
Dead Man's Curve
A Beginning from and End (I find this one really funny because it's so over the top)

I got the Slanted and Enchanted deluxe thingie because it was cheap. I listened to it once while working on physics and didn't really pay attention to it. The next time I listened to it, I was bored at work and it annoyed me and I haven't played it since.

Does the fake Lei'd GOK count? I love that one.

Same with a friend of mine, he's got upwards of 5000 songs on his computer in mp3... I checked the playcount, and roughly only a quarter had actually been listened to.

That's me, too. One reason is I'm still obsessed with the Beach Boys, Spector and other 60s stuff and listen to the same songs/albums over and over instead of always playing new things I've not heard before (i.e., all the music my friend gave me).

I like Yellow Submarine, too. Paperback Writer/Rain is awesome, though, so that would be a tough call. It's weird that those songs are 'hidden' on Past Masters.

I agree, and I think that it was a very intentional and perverse move on Brian's part. I'd rather listen to it than Help Me Ronda, though.

It's similar to the joke that Cassius vs. Sonny does with The Warmth of the Sun, and even, to a lesser extent, our Favourite Recording Sessions does with Don't Back Down, only in the opposite direction. He does it again with Wind Chimes/Gettin' Hungry. In fact, this deserves its own thread.

I love the cheesy organ in Wild Honey and How She Boogalooed it.

I like Al's t-shirt under the button-shirt look, actually. He has it in the When I Grow Up clip, too.

773  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Punk Appreciation Thread on: January 13, 2006, 08:12:28 AM
That's probably the problem with punk and why its messages are still relevant. By the time they get old enough to be in a position of power (I'm thinking politically, here), they've lost their edge or no one would give them the power, anyway. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, neccessarily, but it's sort of a fact of life.

Then again, my opinion here is entirely uninformed and just based on my casual observances, so if anyone wants to argue it, I'm all for it.

Actually, I recently was in a crisis situation where my iPod was unavailable, my portable CD player was unavailable, and all I could use was my trusty old walkman, er, portable cassette player (good thing I hadn't thrown it away or I might have had to go unentertained and *gasp* face the public for a change). Well, let me tell you, the sound was garbage because there was so much hiss. In order to actually hear the music I had to turn it way up, which just made the hiss worse. As for iPods, well, I imagine that if people play them too loud (I can see this being a problem with the tinny bud headphones) they could cause a problem, but this is the same as anything concerning music. To quote a weezer slogan: If it's too loud, turn it down!
