I also know that VDP said that The Beatles came to LA and listened to SMiLE tapes, and that was a load of crap, too. You're point?
Your reference to Van Dyke's mistake is exactly my point. Who cares about some random factoid involving the Beatles that was incorrectly recalled 50 years later. It matters not. It's a weak attempt at discrediting Van Dyke's overall contribution. The same thing goes with Rocky. No matter what you think of him, he was an insider. If you want to disprove one of his claims (like the "surfer stomp"), then you will need to provide something solid, like an eyewitness.

And yet, you still had to stoop to being a male prostitute? That ain't good, Rock. I'm confused. Are people genuinely taken with this guy, or is this sort of like everyone is joking around, and Rocky Raccoon isn't in on the joke? Reminds me of the Daro situation a bit. A dirtbag who shows up and wants to tell his story, and a lot of it seems to be BS, or half-truths. And no amount of "quotation marks" and can turn a turd into a diamond. Are you in denial or something? You are calling a close friend of Brian's a dirtbag? Who spews half-truths and BS? You do know that Van Dyke backed up what Lorren said...right? No matter what you think of Mr. P., it's going to take more than mockery to prove him wrong.

Exactly. Which lyrics would have improved Mike's place in history? By the time Mike was attempting anything that would have appealed to the hipsters and artsy crowd he was playing catch up, he had already missed the boat. Those early songs, as much as I love them, including many of the lyrics, aren't getting anyone into the poetry HOF, including Brian.

What? You mean "teenage gambler...sittin in his rambler" didn't blow you away?

I can see how is he mad. Yes he jumped on a gravy train and has made bank for doing so. He didn't get writing credits<which probably didn't seem to matter as much in 1965 when the band was huge. I am sure he feels and some what rightly so that he has carried the burden of the music since 64<through touring> and now he is looked at as a pariah.<no matter how much confidence you have it has to beat on you> I would guess he feels that Brian fcked as well as the music with the formula by leaving the touring band then screwing up his voice. >not to mention the drugs which may have had some ,and in his opinion most of the reason Brian dropped out of sight> I do want to say I have never been accused as being a Mike Love apologist my wife on numerous times had tried to get me to go see his band.
Stick to your guns and don't bother as you'll come away with a hollow feeling seeing an angry old man up there pretending to be something he isn't. I would go. I saw them last year at Jones Beach and even though I'm not a big Mike supporter, I thought he was great. His voice is a lot stronger than you think and the music is excellent. Just make sure Stamos is not around.

Mike the house flipper. How fitting.
By the way I have eaten Quinoa enough times. It times like shat.
Dropping the sarcasm for a minute...Mike seems like an ok guy, but he's been a slave to his own ego and it's ruined his life. He would have been better off working a regular job.
Kudos to him for admitting that at least two of his wives dumped him.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Don Henley/Mike Love

I don't see how you can compare the two at all. If anything, I would compare Don Henley to Brian Wilson, not Mike Love. Don Henley had great success with the Eagles and also as a solo performer. He can play multiple instruments, has a literature degree and spouts out lyrics like nobody's business (he's also got a surly personality). Mike Love is a ditty writer who was given parts to sing by Brian. It's a no-contest.

Amazing how everybody around here is so anxious to slam Usher. I guess you all wrote hit songs with Brian too...right?
Usher never claimed to be a singer so give the insults a rest, he sang when necessary but his job was to write lyrics and produce, he even said so himself in the book.

I don't know why the continued hate for Mike's branding continues. Brian/Melinda gave the license to Mike, he didn't steal it.
BRI owns the name and the brand, one vote could not "give" anything without a board vote. The BRI umbrella company interest through the voting board basically licensed the franchise that included the name and some specific operating rules and standards to Mike, and he pays for using and advertising with that franchise name just as McDonald's owners pay corporate to be in that franchise...with strict conditions and standards. If they're not met, the agreement can be terminated and the franchise stripped. Simple as that. So wherever the notion came from suggesting that Brian or any one entity other than the BRI board ever "gave" the license away, it's incorrect. If you go watch the Brian/Melinda/Larry King interview, Melinda clearly says "they decided" (meaning her and Brian) to give the brand name to Mike. Whether Brian holds the swing vote or by some other means, they made it very clear they were the reason Mike got it, and they explained the reasons for such.

The Knebworth performance of "Surfer Girl" is interesting. Dennis comes to the front of the stage and Mike clearly has no interest interacting with him. At the end of the song, Carl seems to be heading Mike's way for a word but is stopped by Dennis. Then you see Al and Dennis shaking hands while taking their bows. What was going on with Carl and Mike? Was Carl angry?
I've watched this part many times, and my theory is that Carl (who was the last person to start trouble) was trying to get between Dennis and Mike to cut off any conflict between the two. It looked like Dennis was trying to instigate Mike and he was probably hammered too.

I don't see how you can compare Smile to anything pre-Smile because nobody knows what Smile really is/was. Brian himself said it was experimental music...background music. The lyrics were mysterious and artsy-fartsy. I really never got what was so smiling about Smile anyway, since when does women getting gunned down by bullets an American Indians getting wiped out amount to smiling? Weird. I mean don't get me wrong, I own Smile and spent a lot of time listening to it...but at best...I find it confusing. The melody and harmony are often a mystery to find.
I'm more likely to listen to something from Love You, or California Saga, or something with Brian's trademark soaring harmonies. Plymouth Rock can keep rolling over, but I probably won't get it.
