That sounds like the version from the CD "A Tribute to Brian Wilson" by Cameron Michael Parks from around 10 years ago.
I am fairly certain this is Cameron's version....I was obsessed with his tribute album, it's one of my favorites. I think there was a second version on the album as a bonus track, so it may be that version. There's just something about his recordings, they sound very particular. The whistling, eat a lot part, the instruments used....all on Cameron's version(s).

What overdubs were recorded for the early 70's version? Was the photo of that session the one with Brian, Dean, Marilyn, and Diane in the studio?

Was recently reading a couple of interviews from ESQ 98, one with Richie Canata and one with John Stamos...they both mention the way Carl used to give a "stink eye" whenever any of the playing band members played a wrong note or flubbed up their playing...I also recall Billy Hinsche (on the Endless Harmony doc) talking about getting a look from Carl whenever the same occurred.

My question, is there any video evidence or concert footage of this happening? I'd be interested to hear about when that was in their career, I imagine in the 80s or 90s.

1. What do your significant others think of your BB obsession?     She's fine with it. May sigh when I'm listening to a session of Good Vibrations and she starts to sing then realizes it's just the backing track. She loves when I call her Darlin. I can Hear Music is "our song," and she wants to use Where I Belong for our wedding. She's been with me to a C50 show and a BAD show. She was definitely a fan before I met her, nothing past 66 or so though.

2. Do they dig the BB?     Oops, yep. Guess I replied to this already.

3. Do they now hate the BB because of your obsession?       Nope, but I've had past girlfriends say that when they hear the BB, they instantly think of me...I don't know if that's a good thing or not. ;)

4. If they dig, what album do they like best?      She has the following on vinyl: Pet Sounds, Endless Summer, BB85, and Wild Honey. She's a BIG fan of Wild Honey!

Something humorous to add about that clip of My Sweet Lord: Listen for someone accidentally kicking or bumping either a guitar amp or even an old Fender spring reverb tank several times during the performance, and creating that thunder-crash sound effect that only kicking or bumping a spring reverb tank can create. Shades of "Diamond Head"! Definitely not a planned part of that performance, but it would have been perfect if they had decided to play Diamond Head.  Grin

Ahhhh! I see! Thanks!

I hear the raindrops of Diamond Head (the instrumental) at 1:25...anyone else hear that?

Mike n' Bruce were meant to play Wembley in November.  It appeared on Mike's own page, then it disappeared.  Now, it's getting a little close and it's still unannounced.  Given that the final show of the C50 tour took place there but two years ago, what's the odds of a 'Nutty Jerry' scenario?  Not suggesting that Wembley have actually pulled the rug out, but they might have had concerns regarding confused marketing etc and the possibility of people buying tickets thinking it's the same show as before.  Both Wembley and Mike still have that date free in their respective diaries.
What's a "nutty Jerry" scenario?

You're a little behind the times, ain't ya?
I never had the chance to read all this history in most of the ESQ's from 94 to present...I was given every issue from between those years and started reading them at the beginning of the year...so there's some stuff I'm learning that nobody ever talks about anywhere else, so I think it's fun bringing up topics that aren't brought up...but I am posting under the proper thread, so....

While finishing up the December 1998 issue of Endless Summer Quarterly, I'm intrigued by a few events that occurred during that time and have a few questions...mostly concerning David Marks' return to the band.

I know David returned as Carl started to get sick and from what I read, Marks' addition was a really big deal...so being the young fan that I am ("hardcore" fan of 14 years), I was wondering if any part of the then current shows catered to any of Dave's playing talents and abilities. Did he ever sing lead on anything? I'm sure he played some great leads and solos. Was there any "deep album tracks" played live from his few original years? I'm sure it was mostly celebrated greatest hits from Safari, USA, Surfer Girl, and LDC. Just thought I'd see, very curious.

My other question is, David mentioned that himself, Bruce, and Adrian Baker were in the studio working on a surf instrumental medley with Miserlou, Pipeline,  Wipeout, and Walk Don't Run; did this ever materialize? He said it was Bruce's idea and wanted to market it in Japan. Was anything ever recorded? Did anyone release it?
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Board Suggestion Box, comments, suggestions, etc. on: September 14, 2014, 06:30:24 PM
What about a sub-board to discuss boots? I know discussions aren't banned but for those if who who wallow in such stuff it would be a neat resource to alert others to new releases, discuss availability (within accepted limits) and even rate various releases.

Edit: and hopefully setting it aside would reduce the chances that some folk would be offended by such discussions…

I thought there was already a place to do this
Is there? On the SmileySmile board?
I've never seen any sub board to review and discuss boots.

And going back to the original poster who we're quoting, I second the suggestion on sub board for boots!
We can have one on each boot and discuss variations of the boot such as Dumb Angel Rarity versions, SOTs, live boots, etc.

I have a question about the late 70s Mike Love song Trisha.....did Mike just listen to Sherry She Needs Me (using it as a direct influence) or was it just merely a coincidence that the song sounded exactly like the former?

Furthermore, was Trisha recorded for a solo album (First/Country Love? Proposed for Celebration?) Beach Boy's project? Are there any other familiar voices on the song?
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Songs Or Albums That Eventually Grew On You on: September 12, 2014, 03:12:34 PM
Grew on me after a while:
Heads You Win, Tales I Lose
Finders Keepers
Where Has Love Been
Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long
Steamboat
The Girl From New York City
Blueberry Hill
When Girls Get Together
Sumahama
Oh Darling
South America
Agree with these. Deleted the ones that I liked immediately ("At My Window") & others that didn't grow on me at all (e.g. "Talk to Me").

It's Trying to Say
It may well be my favorite AC tune. What's about it you found complex to get into?
I think it was the fact that the rest of Adult Child had either songs id heard on the boxset before (H.E.L.P., Games, Still Dream, It's Over) or the "infamous" big band tunes, early Shortenin Bread, Tomboy, & Everybody Wants to Live....so stuff like Life is for the Living, Deep Purple, and the titles I just mentioned were peaked my interest...before possessing an AC boot, i hadn't heard of It's Trying to Say or Lines...so the songs I had heard of from liner notes, books, bios had really intrigued me and I wanted to hear them asap. You know, you read about Brian's health obsessions and he didn't write too many songs in the late 70s, Life is for the Living really interested me...I'd always heard about Brian's "cigarette song" (everybody wants to live) and I obviously had to hear it!

So since I hadn't heard of It's Trying to Say and so I wasn't as interested....but i never hated the song, I just wasn't as interested. But listening over and over, the lyric is so appropriate for Dennis, I love his and the backing vocals, and I just love the beginning lyric, it's so "everyday Brian," I often think about those lyrics as I do normal average everyday things.
So I guess I'm saying I thought the song was ok from the beginning, but over time, it's made its way to one of my top favorite unreleased BB tunes.
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: September 12, 2014, 02:36:55 PM
In Ian MacDonald's book 'Revolution in the Head' he claims that The Beatles deliberately avoided fade-out endings (especially on their early records). However, when thinking about endings I realised that 'Our Prayer' and 'Girl Don't Tell Me' were the only BB songs I could immediately think of that don't fade out, any reason why Brian/the band used Fade-Outs so often?

Sorry, I know it's a pretty off the wall question
Off the Wall questions and others like this are what this thread is all about! I love reading everyone's questions, however big or little or detailed or vague. Bring em on!

But to answer your question, I have no idea. 😉

So i was just reading an interview with David Marks from the December 1998 issue pf ESQ and while he was discussing Murry's writing of Two Step Side Step, he mentioned that Murry "got ripped off when he wrote the Tennessee Waltz and else got credit for it." That was from ESQ VOL 12, Number 1, Issue No. 45, 12/1998.

So is this the Tennessee Waltz we all know and love as a country standard?
Has this story been revealed anywhere else? Ive honestly never heard that before.
If its true, it definitely makes Brian's recording of TW with Spring seem a little more sincere.

Thats so interesting, ive never read anything positive about the Hallmark version of Spirit of R&R...i dont mind it, iike the "wall of Brians" at the beginning, but for some reason, the drumming realy bugs me...whats everyone else's beef with that version?
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: September 11, 2014, 04:06:49 AM
While listening to the Hallmark BB Songs from Here and Back...I got to thinking, what's everyone's favorite version of the  Spirit of Rock and Roll?

Maybe I missed it scanning through the thread, but does anyone know when or if this will be in general release in theaters?  Wonder if it will be a limited or broad release......

From the reviews I anticipate it will be difficult to watch the whole thing with both eyes open.  But I will watch for sure first chance I get.  And yeah, I'll no doubt buy the video to add to my already ridiculous collection of beachboys product.

Per the LA Times this morning, the film does not yet have a distributor, hence no release date...

Just read on wiki that the distributor is Lions Gate Entertainment, I hope that's true!!!

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_and_Mercy_(film)

Lion's Gate will distribute the film internationally. They've yet to find a distributor for the US.
Oh ok, I don't really understand the whole process of that type of situation, I love movies, but how they're produced and the distribution and what not will always be a mystery to me. 😉

When I first heard Marcella on the Vol 3 of Greatest Hits (best of the Brother Years), I didn't instantly love it...it sounded really odd and weird to me, especially after Til I Die and Surf's Up...but after hearing a live version, and listening to the "one arm over my shoulder" section a few times, I started to love it!

To be continued....

Why hasn't anybody made a mash-up of "Wind Chimes" and "Can't Wait Too Long"? They would go great together!

They did. It's on this: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=8859.0

Yes, I remember that one but I was thinking of taking all snippets of CWTL and utilizing bits from both versions of WC (SMiLE and Smiley versions as on TSS and SOT) and consolidating it all into an enjoyable 3 & 1/2 minute song made up of sections. Maybe I'll do it some day.
That'd be great! Would love to hear it!

I discovered Wind Chimes a few days ago and I love it!  At the start when he says "Hanging down from my window"  I couldn't help but think it sounded exactly like some other song I've heard.  Does anyone know or am I thinking of a great song that doesn't exist?
Huh?

Is there another song out there that has a similar melody to Wind Chimes...
The only two things I can think of (that are obvious and stuff you probably already knew)...but there's the Smiley version of Wind Chimes, but it doesn't sound anything like the Smile version and Brian recycled the bass line from the Smile  version for Can't Wait Too Long.
