Has Al's Crumple Car ever appeared on a bootleg? To my knowledge, I've never heard it on anything...I was pretty surprised when I found this:

http://youtu.be/OteK1AKG6HM

I never even heard about that song!  Shocked

Although musically it wouldn't fit, thematically it would have been a nice wink on Still Cruisin'

Brian's demo for "The first time":

Check out the other videos from that user.
Yeah, I saw them user had uploaded a law of bootleg material.
I've only read about Al's crumple car song on Andrew Doe's website and maybe in endless summer quarterly.

Besides the released version (on GIOMH) of Desert Drive and numerous live versions on live bootlegs, how many early versions of Desert Drive with Andy Paley "exist?" All I know of is an instrumental/jam version on the Slightly American Music bootleg.

Who sang lead on She Knows Me too Well? I knew it to be a Jeff lead ever since it was on the setlist back in the mid to late 2000.
56  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smiley Smile done right? on: October 09, 2014, 12:14:46 AM
Honestly, I think there's a few other albums that need a "done right" before Smiley Smile, such as MIU, Keepin the Summer Alive or some might even suggest So Tough.

Interesting the photographer managed to catch Bruce when he wasn't adjusting his microphone.  Or maybe that hadn't manifest itself yet, since he was actually busy playing the keyboard in those years. I guess., anyway.

I wonder what the earliest-known example of fans noticing Bruce overly adjusting his microphone to the point where it became a "thing" to BB nerds. I'm sure Bruce (and all BBs for that matter) have adjusted their mics over the years plenty, but was it the M&B-era before people online made a point of noticing its prevalence? Did that become a "tick" at some point along the way (maybe exacerbated by the later era shows where he is far less involved from a musical instrument standpoint)? Half-serious question, but I'll bet somebody on this board knows!
I'm unsure of when it came to be, I had noticed a lot of banter and jokes about it on message boards and FB within the past 5 years at least. When I saw Adam Marsland perform last August, someone made the request for Disney Girls (Teresa Cowles outright refused to play the song and took a break (LOL!) and Adam made a joke about wearing short shorts and adjusting his mic!)

I similarly tried to start an ongoing joke about Bruce always wanting to start a clap on every other song but usually nobody joins in (great example: Live in Knebworth in 1980, I believe he at least tries to start a clap during Heroes and Villains and Lady Lynda, among other songs). Alas, nobody kept that joke going except myself. 😉

Could also use an "encore" version of Runaway from the 80s from the Sunkist album.
And if you needed a car medley, it's on the Hallmark cd.

Why did Mike Love wear a hat like that?
It makes it look like he has a lot of hair, almost a fro.
60  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: All things TSS packaging, presentation and booklet etc on: October 08, 2014, 12:28:08 AM
Am I the only one who got the small version of the box set and not the full one because I couldn't afford it?

I doubt it - same here.

Nice little box it is too - and we get a button which the big box apparently didn't Smiley
I actually bought the little one second, it was back when I had less bills and lived with my parents...I also wanted it because disc 2 (while having the same tracks as the big box set) had a different track line up than disc 2 of the big boxset.

Oh when I actually had money to by minuscule different items! That'll never happen again! 😬

I gotcha! Crystal clear!

That reminds me, I was listening to a local oldies radio station and I think they started playing God Only Knows and then a female's voice came in talking about the new album, here's what was said in a general round-about-way, as I'm remembering from 2 weeks ago:

"Brian Wilson records and will release an album that was inspired when Mike Love fired him from the Beach Boys after Brian wanted to tour with the group more after the reunion tour."

I don't remember anymore as what I do remember stuck out like a sore thumb. They then started playing Califonia Girls and I think the same voice says "listen to the tune that Brian Wilson was inspired to write during an LSD trip."
I've never heard anyone (on the radio) talk about that when talking about California Girls....the song played out and went on just like any other oldies station...it was very odd, it wasn't a "news" segment or anything.

So I may be late in the game, I've not read this thread in weeks, we're up to 87 pages and searching for the words: "Summer Means New Love 2014" brings up a lot of items I don't need. But...

I Just saw on the Wikipedia article for Summer Means New Love that Brian rerecorded the tune in 2014, is it going to be on the new album?
Sorry, I forgot what I read in the Rolling Stone article about this tune being recorded...I only read through it once quickly, sorry if my post is redundant.

I've just been kicking around an idea, since I was disappointed with the results of Priore's SMiLE... what would it sound like if one put together a 'proper' version of Smiley Smile?  Well, take a look at the track list, you'll see what I mean:

SIDE ONE
01) Heroes and Villains - 'Smile Sessions' version, spliced to single version (so that the last chorus fades)
02) Vegetables - 'Smile Sessions' version without opening segue
03) Mrs. O'Leary's Cow - 'Smile Sessions' version
04) He Gives Speeches - obviously standing in for "She's Goin' Bald", it's short but it fits.
05) I Love To Say Da Da - since there isn't a Smile equivalent of "Little Pad", this seems to be the best fit, complete with Water Chant at the start.

SIDE TWO
01) Good Vibrations - 'Smile Sessions' version with hum-de-dums.
02) With Me Tonight - 'Smile Sessions' version??  Doesn't that one end rather abruptly when someone knocks something over, though?
03) Wind Chimes - 'Smile Sessions' version without opening segue
04) ...................no clue.  I need to fill the spot left by "Gettin' Hungry".
05) Wonderful - 'Smile Sessions' version
06) You're Welcome - Seems like a reasonable replacement for "Whistle In", another round chant.
I was thinking of an additional instrumental (PS had 2), you could use "Tune X" or "I don't know" in place of Gettin Hungry.

Something I would include, and maybe it's because it's my favorite version of th song, but i love the version of Graduation Day from 1967 in Washington DC (I think). It's interesting to hear Bruce do his parts as opposed to hearing Brian.

They did this three or four times during the Fall (Thanksgiving Tour) in Boston, N.Y., Pittsburg, and probably Washington, November, 1967.  They're on the aforementioned "Vocal Element" boot. Daryl Dragon's and Ron Brown's first shows with The Boys.
Ah, maybe the vocal element is where I heard this one.

I was thinking, perhaps use some of the live tracks from the Hallmark album? It's got a few late 80s great sounding recordings.

Here's a name from the past I... always wonder what happened to Dave Prokopy!
I've printed and read his "Prokopy Notes" which were great back on the day!
What is he known for? Other writings? Past Message board frequenter? All around good guy/fan?
69  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: October 04, 2014, 10:01:36 PM
Re: punkinhead question. In my concert book with Jon we have an interview with Ron altbach where he discusses his first shows in 1974. If you look at you'll see that he discusses Carl giving him the "stink eye" but in that particular case it may have been more of an inter-band squabble than anything altbach actually did
Ah I see, perhaps Altbach was seen as a Mike Love camper rather than just Beach Boys tour band member or Wilson camp.

I'm getting through the book, slowly but surely...I'm also reading back issues of ESQ from 94 to present, so it's def tough! I'm in the middle of 1998 in ESQ...I'm in the middle of 1966 in your book.

Any future Beach Boys projects coming up that you're working on or that you know of?

Where did the writers, researchers, and all around huge fans such as Brad Elliot, David Leaf, and Dominic Priore disappear to? Having become a bigger fan in early 2000, I read so much of their stuff (from previous years and decades) and looked up to them (among other current writers, researchers, fans such as Andrew Doe, Alan Boyd, etc).

I feel like the last I've seen them active was:
David Leaf- Beautiful Dreamer & Who is Harry Nilsson
Dominic Priore- his Smile book (not LLVS, the post BWPS book)
Brad Elliot- his old website

I just thought of this...while Bruce was coming up with songs with Linda, did he sing or mention Al's Lady Lynda?
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: October 04, 2014, 09:06:40 AM
This is probably a silly question, but there were a few Surfin' Safari reissues released because of the 50 year copyright expiration.  How come other albums didn't follow?  We should be up to All Summer Long already.

I read somewhere that the copyright law had been changed. According to Wikipedia, on November 1, 2013, the copyright for sound recordings were extended to 70 years. Everything in the public domain is still in the public domain though.
So would that reissue of Surfin Safari be worth much?
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I'm meeting Mike Love's Beach Boys tomorrow on: October 03, 2014, 05:26:20 AM
Meet and greets are designed to be very superficial, hello, where you from, great, let's take a picture.  They aren't the place for in-depth interviews unfortunately.  It sounds like you got more from the time with Bruce than most.

The burning questions for Mike that I have, and as far as I know have never been answered, is what he thinks of Smiley Smile.  I'd have probably brought a copy of it for him to sign to open the door for discussion.  His rewrite of He Gives Speeches as She's Goin' Bald is as trippy as anything on Smile.  Had he accepted this was where music was going and he was joining in the psychedelic lyric writing of the time, was he getting stoned at this point (he did use marijuana for a time until TM in early 68), was the group happy with the new DIY approach of Smiley vs. the big LA studio productions, how much input did the group really have in the arrangements and production of the songs since production was credited to the Beach Boys, what does he think now of Gettin' Hungry being released as a single by Brian and Mike, etc.
He really smoked weed? I've never heard or read that.

My wife doesn't quite connect with my passion for the complexity in Brian Wilson's music from Today in 1965 until the SMiLE era in 1967, when Brian was using Wrecking Crew musicians in particular. However, I remember doing work at home on the weekend this year and I had Made in California boxset playing in the background. She noted a marked difference in the quality of the music after the SMiLE era songs had finished. I know this (statement) will stir things up on this board among some of you, but to quote the character Jeff Lebowski (or the Dude) from the film the Big Lebowski, "that's, like, her opinion, man!"
As in better quality or a different quality?
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Making Your Own Beach Boys Playlist/Compilation on: October 02, 2014, 04:25:23 AM
Posted this about 18 months back – it's a disc I burned for a friend who had no interest in the band and thought they were all surf, sun and cheese.

I still like it – 25 tracks and they all fit on to one CD.  Not chronological; I tried to ensure it flows a little. Might have changed it today – DITLoaT certainly belongs here. Maybe one or two others – Let The Wind Blow, from In Concert, for eg.

Not into this reliance on 60s tracks. The 60s might have seen Brian's creative pop peak but the 70s were extremely strong, for all the band, and much of 2012's effort blew my mind also.

On that point, it's heavy on TWGMTR tracks as that was in very heavy circulation on my CD player at the time, and I'd probably only pull Strange World to free-up space out of those. Have included sources here, which I didn't before; one or two have changed, notably Only With You (Live) which now has an official source in even better quality than the original Hang Ten Carnegie bootleg.  I've also got my hands on the rest of the 2012 remasters since compiling the list.

23: From There To Back Again (That's Why God Made the Radio)

That's one hell of a disc!
