I've got the instrumental to 'California Girls' blasting from my stereo system right now. This is unreal.

"listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons." - That Lester Bangs quote sums up this song perfectly.

I love the Summer Days version, but this instrumental blows me away every time I listen to it.

Denni, what did you expect? You come onto a public forum and announce that you're the illegitimate child of Dennis Wilson and then expect no one to comment on it, I find that very naive.

Just to make the point, what has the traffic been like on this board this week as a result of this news. Has it increased ten fold, a hundred fold or more?

Other societies have less acerbic terminology for the description of a child born "outside of a marriage" The French use the term "fille naturelle» for a girl.  It does not make her any less a person, who merits respect.

This board which can be awesome for discussion but the debate can be acerbic and without need.  It disrespects the reason that we have the interest in the discussion, the music, not gossip.

This lovely girl, should be accorded some gentleness, understanding and kindness as "she finds her way."  But she should not have to "go away" and be subject to "schoolyard bullies."

I suspect that a large percentage of this board are well educated and versed with "technical tools and information" that blow me away.   Education and information should be a "tool" and not a "weapon."

But, we are living in an age where everything is "twitted or facebook logged," etc., and since this is sort of a "small world" in terms of music interest in the Boys, "word travels" fast in this electronic forum.   And this board tends not to be censored, as is the "American Way," so words need to be "chosen carefully" as they can be forwarded and republished in another forum, which is not always nice, especially if entire posts are "lifted without proper attribution."

It is wonderful to see a young person delve into this music, but "baby steps" might be the pace at which it  might be approached.  Wink

And, to Denni, please rent Dr. Zhivago...the story of an artist (poet) whose legendary personage was as creative and intense as Dennis.  It reminds me so much of this scenario as it has been presented.  It is old (but timeless) and still very cool.

***And I suspect the number of "hits" to the site might reasonably also reflect the Reagan event, which AGD and others helped provide us better quality video.

"Holy" "Hell" "that "  "is "  "a "  "lot "  "of "  "quotes " LOL

Anyone here seen the Chris Farley SNL "Bennett Brauer" bit?

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7msdo_saturday-night-live-bennett-brauer_fun

Totally reminded me of it  LOL

Spent a few years in college. Now I work for a small landscaping company. We plant, mulch, build walls, decks, patios, etc. It's a fun job - hard work but well worth it...most of the work is in the summer - I have quite a hiatus in the winter. I'm also doing a little free-lance web design on the side.

Lately I've been recording some local artists' music....as well as my own. I keep a fairly busy life.

"This sentence doesn't really make sense to me:" LOL

Punkinhead was referring to the (I quote) "Pet Sounds photo shoot" at the zoo - where there were giraffes, elephants, tigers, and other animals that Brian and the band saw.

It is actually a very creative notion that the Pet Sounds cover is related to Smiley Smile - they're both green in color, both have animals etc. It's something I had never even thought of. And I wasn't under the influence when I understood what he was talking about.

i've always loved (whether intentional or not) that the cover pretty much exactly says what smiley smile is to smile.  That building in smiley smile is the same building on the smile cover.  cept smile is set on fire and the smoke that comes from it is smiley smile.

What Smile cover are you speaking of?  The one I see is  a shop window, not a house.

It is a house - but, if you look closely: the windows on the SmileySmile house are the exact same as the shop-windows on the SMiLE cover...The smiling-lips on the house were a nice addition too  Grin

If you want to see the shop windows on the house, good for you. They're similar; but the exact same, no. Still, you're right, the inspiration was obviously from Smile!

okay, not exact replicas, but they are shop windows that look strangely like the SMiLE windows. Granted, the Smiley house isn't made of wood siding - so I'll succumb to your argument  Grin

Wait; I wouldn't want to go out on that limb...
the Smiley house MIGHT be made of wood siding; I can't really tell, since it's an indistinct distant shot.
The Smile shop does look like some sort of siding, but it could as easily be steel siding, couldn't it?
And the trim above the windows and doors looks, to me, a lot more like bricks placed vertically, than wood

 LOL

In my very humble opinion, I see a tradition adobe hut with a few modern modifications. We'll have to see if AGD know the coordinates of where this SMiLE house is located....we'll assemble an expedition team and travel there to ascertain what the exact building materials are - plus, it'd be nice to see if that smoke is really from burning SMiLE albums or if it's from something a bit stronger  Grin

Hmm, you're losing me now: The SMILE house is a business location, somewhere, with a front stoop of tile set in concrete( shop attendants visible behind the display window curtains)
And even without the expedition: the Smiley House couldn't be burning SMiLE albums, because they hadn't made any yet!

In my opinion, the cover is a reflection hiding out from the world.

You've got all the zoo animals outside, those are the same ones from the Pet Sounds photo shoot, Brian and the rest of the guys visited them at the zoo.
Now the pets return the favor and come back to visit Brian.  Wink

I had never made that connection before about the zoo animals. I think I like the album a little bit more now  Smiley

somebody is posting about me over there. Why?? If I wanted my name over there, I would have done it myself. I like it here and have no intention on posting at BW board. There is no info for me there. I looked you  up and you are a member here, just hasn't posted for a long time. Please leave the Wilson family alone!! No more posting about me. Why don't you post here?? Ask me anything you want, in front of all the members here, I will be glad to reply. I won't name you and lower myself that way. Can you please delete you're post over there. I'm no different from you or other members. I'm a Denny and Beach Boy fan.

Hmm, I don't really see a problem.
You're news. And you posted a real picture of yourself here. People are going to talk and share the news and drop in and look and talk about it elsewhere.
 That's the real world.
and as to "rude"; your pic shows a pretty young woman. If I was your age( I'm not), lived somewhere close in CA( I don't) I might try and take you out. What's the big deal there?
All in all, if you keep your wits about you, everything will be just fine. But don't come here crying when people say something about you somewhere, or talk about having seen your picture, or even , repeat/quote the things you've said here. This isn't a secret society where everything is kept "in house". Pretty much anyone can surf in and see what's going on, and head back where they came to talk about it.

I don't care if people talk about me!  Why go to the wison's, they have nothing to do with me posting here. I don't care who views my picture, thats what it's there for. No guy has hit on me, it's not a guy posting there about me. I knew this would cause a stir and I'm alright with that, I do agree with you're secret society and surf in to see me and my posts, that's not my problem... I don't want to feel like a freak. The Wilson board has no interest in me and I like it that way. I only asked her not to post about me there, come here and talk to me, to all of us. My wits are just fine thank you. BTW...crying?? complaining maybe, no tears were shed during or after my post.

I'm shocked that anyone can maneuver through that board - that has to be the worst forum set-up I have come across.

I hope he picked some songs from Disneyland attractions.  I know he's a fan of the park and visits often.

It's a small world after all, it's a small world after all....  Grin

I've never wanted an amusement park ride to end as badly as the times I've ridden that one. I'd love to hear him do the Pirates Of The Caribbean and make a music video for that song though.

I was thinking more along the lines of Yo-Ho! (Pirates of Caribbean) and The Tiki Room song.  I think both would work great with his style.

Yo-Ho in particular has always stuck me as being very similar to "Heroes and Villains" in the way it deals with historical characters.  The main difference is that Disney actually had a format in which a 10-15 minute composition filled with variations on a single theme could actually work and be accessible to a wide audience.

Above all, I'm hoping it's full of songs that he likes and not any of the 90's pop/broadway stuff.

I remember starting a thread a while back asking people what Brian's influences were for SMiLE - I remember hearing that Ennio Morricone soundtracks as well as Disney soundtracks could have been influences.

I think if he picks classic and overlooked songs he'll really knock one out of the park for his fanbase.

This is scary. I actually voluntarily listened 'Night Time' today because I wanted to hear it. For the longest time I hated that song.....that part before the chorus where he sings "Wait for a while because...." is flipping great. I love this album!

Back when I was a kid Pirates of the Caribbean was a flipping great ride - now it's full of that Johnny Depp nonsense. I don't get why Disney has to f*** up stuff like that....that was a classic ride not to be tainted by hollywood's bullshit....sigh...

The only good thing that came out of the 'It's a Small World' ride was seeing someone throw an ice-cream cone from their boat, hitting one of the animatronic characters LOL. I still remember laughing for the majority of the ride due to that. Good timin'...

not too high hopes here.  not sure what to expect.

My hopes aren't high - but if they are more obscure Disney songs I'll be looking forward to hearing them. I'd also love to hear some tunes from 'Peter Pan'...
5917  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: A whole friggin' bunch of my songs. on: February 09, 2011, 05:43:36 PM
Hey Luther!

Great set of songs you got here. I've been listening to them on and off since I downloaded them the other day. Some songs I really like and others I don't - but they are mostly consistent in their variety of instruments and/or arrangement.

Favorites thus far: your cover of 'I'll Bet He's Nice' blew me away - great singing and arrangement. And I can't believe you don't like 'Love' (the band)! Your song 'A Matter Of Fact' really reminded me of them....but maybe that's just me being crazy. Since you uploaded it the other day I've been listening to 'Dream Morning' constantly. Miserable Grey, Marianne are you listening, To Spite My Face - I liked a lot.

I'll keep listening as the days go on. Most of the songs I mentioned above I added to my favorites playlist in itunes (which is tough to get on!).

So, obviously you play the guitar - do you also play piano, drums, as well? what program do you use to record with (I'm assuming it's digital due to the synth instruments)?

EDIT: also love your song 'Falling Down'. Another thing I forgot to mention was your awesome ability to keep songs to an average of 2 minutes or less....whether by accident or design it is the perfect time for a pop song.

Does anyone know what session this is from? Could it be for 'Can't Wait Too Long?' - it seems to have the same exact pitch as the intro to 'Can't Wait Too Long'

I was made to love her

Thanks - I heard the instrumental of IWMTLH being played at 1:11 but it didn't sound like those harmonies would really fit in the song...but they seem to be a perfect match pitch-wise to that song. Another reason I asked was because the description on the video said it was from a 1968 session - maybe the uploader got the year wrong. Thanks again!

Well, now that you're saying..... I kinda wonder where in the song this shows up..... Maybe it was for an alternative vocal arrangement?

Towards the end you can hear Brian say "we're not using this for the track, we're just using this for a pitch thing" - so I really wonder how this recording would have helped with the song.

I'm thinking we'll see more, especially considering the state of Mike's voice. It could have just been an off night for him, or he could have some ill, but either way, for the Beach Boys to exist in any fashion, they could really really really use Al on a permanent basis.

That said, Mike is still Mike and he sounded good in spots and is still...... Mike, which counts for something, and it was awesome to see him Al and Bruce and that rockin band! (Cowsill rules)!

I've seen clips of some of their more recent shows and Mike sounds great in them (not counting the 'Dancing With The Stars' nightmare) - I agree with your thoughts - he was probably sick or had an off night. And I hope they allow Al to stay on if he wants to.

On http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baroque_pop#1960s_peak, there's a part that discusses the origins of Baroque pop in which is says Bacharach experiments with different instruments and Spector uses his wall of sound.

Then it goes on and says: "In 1963 Brian Wilson probably responded to this by using string arrangements on songs on the Beach Boys' Surfer Girl album."

My question is, was the first song Brian used string arrangements on the Surfer Moon?  I was thinking it was, and I regard that song very high on early BB/BW tunes...it got me thinking about how the song Surfer Girl doesn't have any string arrangements, isn't that odd?  I know In My Room and Catch a Wave have a harp part, would that be considered a "string arrangement/section?" Are there any other songs on Surfer Moon or that era with string arrangements? Isn't there a BW-related artist that recorded or did some other form of Surfer Moon? B-side to Humpty Dumpty?

Brian Wilson first recorded 'Surfer Moon' with Bob and Sheri and that became the b-side to Humpty Dumpty.
