Completely forgot about Empire of the Sun - Cadillac of the Skies is a definite top 5 favorite score songs for me.

Also, is your first choice from 'The Shawshank Redemption'? I can't remember but the name is awfully familiar.

Taxi Driver by Bernhard Hermann (sp?). He's the guy that did all those hitchcock films, but this is his best (and last. he died the night he finished recording it) at least for me.  I think I like it 'cos it sort of reminds me of Smile with it's weird percussion and recurring theme(s). Check it out if you haven't yet.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1UBfv7mh_s&feature=related

That is one of the few classic movies I haven't seen...I need to hurry up and see that. Really like that score though...reminds me of 'The French Connection' - especially the percussion.

Did not know Ennio Morricone did mission to mars soundtrack, guess i need to watch that movie again to hear the soundtrack closely. All Summer Long and Ballad of Easy Rider were both amazing ending songs to a movie.

Definitely listen to the last two minutes of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hql-U8Okheg - Morricone did a phenomenal job with this score (this is probably my favorite individual piece of instrumental music I have heard - save Beethoven's 7th, In The Back Of My Mind, and Vivaldi's L'Estro Armonico Op. 3 concerto No. 10).

Also, I created a thread a while back regarding musical influences for SMiLE and Morricone's work came up as a possible definite influence.

Easy Rider has been one of my favorites ever since I saw it. That soundtrack is incredible. I remember listening to the commentary by Dennis Hopper and he said he almost had another band do the whole score (I think it was Crosby, Stills, and Nash) but then, thankfully, decided against it.

Easy Rider & American Graffiti soundtracks Thumbs Up

Ennio Morricone did a great film score for 'Mission To Mars' - probably my second favorite film score. Such great music!

I've really been into film scores and soundtracks lately...

Could be orchestral scores, or pop music soundtracks (Magical Mystery Tour), etc.

My favorite orchestral score (has been since I was a kid) would have to be James Horner's score from Apollo 13.
As of now my favorite soundtrack would have to be the soundtrack to 'Thicker Than Water' - a surf film by Jack Johnson.

Anyone else out there have a favorite soundtrack???

Could you possibly copy and paste page 29 onto a post here (unless it's too long)? My computer won't load the last 75% of the page for some reason.

Also, speaking of the Beatles; Brian said he felt like he was in competition with The Beatles during that time. The Beatles were making songs like 'Tomorrow Never Knows' 'She Said She Said' 'Here There And Everywhere'  - it would only make sense he would seek out a spiritual avenue to help intellectualize his records.

It is interesting that possibly Brian was reading up on Zen, Astrology, etc only to beat the Beatles at their own game.

Glen Campbell. Relentlessly. Neighbours must hate me....

It's not on account of Glen

The bacchanalian orgies, opium smoking, gunfights and the pet bear might have something to do with it, sure, but you can't be too sure.  Grin

Just ate dinner feeling incredibly heroic because I'd put on Holst's The Planets, which starts with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NeQ1h6lzLI

LOVE 'The Planets'! Great suite of music.

Dammit I wish that were a real thing. Even if it were a fraud it'd be a neat thing to put on the workdesk. Perhaps i'll make one of my own.

Ear candy, keep up the great work, nice to have a laugh on here once in a while Smiley

Good Vibrations maybe?  Grin

Grin haha no. I could have sworn it was something like 'incense and peppermint' but that sounds nothing like 'Look'...i'll search for the thread later tonight and see if I can find the name of the song.
5487  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Random Beach Boys \ on: June 28, 2011, 01:04:10 PM
My neighbor's house caught on fire on today and I started to think of "Fire" from smile. Thought for a second like Brian and wondered if my Beach Boys started the fire in the first place. Then kinda watched the firefighters work while listening to the song.

Ha! Listening to BWPS 'Wind Chimes' right now and a storm has seemed to have formed outside during it's play - 'Fire' is now starting... Shocked

Sucks for your neighbor, I hope the fire wasn't too bad.
5488  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Look/ B's 9th symphony on: June 28, 2011, 12:53:54 PM
...that's up for debate!  Grin

Does anyone know what part of B's 9th I'm talking about? Last movement....

Yeah, I there is an obscure 'Look' vibe in that last section....not a definite similarity, but still a vibe.

And I just realized how similar 'Look' and 'Holidays' are (with that marching beat)....interesting what one can still find after hundreds of listens.

I remember mentioning on another thread that it sounded like 'Look' had the potential to be a great pop song, and then someone commented on how another popular 60s era song had a similar marching beat - I totally forgot what the song was - anyone know?

'Vinyl' is plural already, you don't need to add an 's' to the end of it. That "Money Is King"/"Wall Street" picture sleeve is impressively weird, I'd love to own it! Have you listened to the songs yet or are you one of those people who doesn't intend to do that for whatever foolish reason?

Huh?  If you read to the bottom, you'll see that I expressed the need to shop for a turntable...  so, NO, Haven't heard them yet.

I think he posted that comment before you added that last tidbit in - as I also read your post a while ago and did not see that part.

I can't wait for the next single to come out! 'Wedding in Madagascar' is a great piece. As Bgas said the first two singles are available on itunes. Also, 'Come To The Sunshine' and 'Do What You Wanta' (and two others) are available for download - if anyone here hasn't heard these gems it's definitely worth the few bucks to purchase!

Nope. It was there from the initial post. Amazing what can be missed.

Hmmm, that is amazing.

Indeed. What a good story.

haha if I was given the chance to meet Brian I would probably pass out or something lol.
5492  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Look/ B's 9th symphony on: June 28, 2011, 07:43:21 AM
Out of all of Brian's work, 'Look' is the only one that really reminds me of classical work.

I posted this link here on smileysmile before, but here it is again: Someone did a piano cover of the Life Suite:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLyX3UnnWVk

At around 2:10 you can really get a feel for classical work. I can't really compare it to anything specific, but it just sounds so classical. It is one of my favorite moments out of all of Brian's music.
5493  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Movie Bio Announced. on: June 28, 2011, 07:14:40 AM
I really hope they do a scene where Brian is in the studio recording the instrumental track for 'In The Back Of My Mind' - at the end of the song show everyone behind the glass and the session musicians looking awestruck at what they just heard...and hopefully the viewing audience will be just as awed.

I want every one of Brian's under-appreciated kick ass musical moments to be in this movie - I want the audience to get a full understanding of the genius behind the music.
I would also like them to show vocal session 5A of please let me wonder, because this video shows more of the hidden genius as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1rd9I_Wk6I&feature=related

I've never heard that before! WOW! That a cappella starting at 1:40 is breathtaking. Is that part even in the released version of the song?

Contact - Carl Sagan

Also, I implore anyone here who is remotely interested in science fiction to read 'Childhood's End' by Arthur C Clarke.
5496  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Denni on: June 27, 2011, 07:24:12 PM
That pic of herself was awfully convincing that she was Dennis' kid. Who knows....it was probably 'Nobody' taking the piss out of us.

Either way, I remember several posts had been deleted due to a high volume of obscenities....but my memory may be wrong. Around this time she explained that her ex-boyfriend's girlfriend was a member of the smiley smile board (coincidence much?) and she had gotten Denni's password for her smiley account, and had been posting under her name. Then she started getting stalked by a fellow board member. The drama was too much for everyone here. And thus I think she got the boot.

That piano riff in that section sounds like a Scott Joplin piece.

Been on a week long Beach Boys binge. Just made a Holland/Carl and the Passions playlist. Been listening to Surfin' USA album constantly.

Listened to the new Coldplay single 'Moving to Mars' - great song. Also been listening the hell out of The Doors lately.

And after a week without my stereo I'm reinstalling it tonight and will crank up Good Timin' - Live at Knebworth.

Hey, is it too late to be the recipient  of a shiny new PM? I'm getting weary of haunting the youtubes in hopes of some wonderful surprise.

Maybe the mag wuill get to a store near you soon( I'm still hoping for me) and you can buy the mag. OR get one from MOJO, or Ebay.
Why is it that everyone feels they deserve to get things for free?

I bought the magazine. Can someone PM me a fucking turntable to listen to the record that came with it?
