Vega-tables is one of my favorites; AlternateBrianWilson's version is killer. And that coda harmony still blows me away Every time I hear it.

My least favorite track would have to be 'Child Is Father To The Man' - once I hear a cleaned up version I may change my mind - but it sounds so muddy to my ears, and that chorus is so repetitious IMO.

We already have one of these threads, it's called The Smile Sessions Boxset.

I disagree. Grin
5328  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian instrumentals '65 on: August 08, 2011, 05:14:52 AM
Salt Lake City has a great backing track.

It's cool but like "When I Grow Up", the backing tracks are more similar to their early stuff, and that's not the sound I want on this mix.

May just be the inclusion of the harpsichord, but I find the instrumental of 'When I Grow Up' to be very psychedelic.

Can anyone condense any useful information on the SMiLE boxset from the last 130 pages into an easy-to-digest summary for me, please?

oh I love you smile-boxset dreamers.

But certainly, they're becoming less lovable every day.
Less loveable as you try to kill the dream, Phil. Wink

Fortunately it's not a dream and Phil, who appears to be locked into some sort of alternate reality (but still able to post on the SmileySmile.net in this reality), doesn't seem to understand this.

I was hoping for some new information SOON to whet my SMiLE appetite - now I'm just hoping there's new information soon just so I don't have to read Phil's monotonous posts anymore.

Hey mods, this is honestly bordering on trolling, imo. He is pretty much pissing everyone off and wasting bandwidth doing it. There's a difference between SHARING your opinion and bothering the living hell out of everyone with it. So far he's told us his favorite type of pizza (and how he orders it) and shared probably 100 posts saying almost the exact same thing ("I want SMiLE to come out but it's probably not going to happen; if it does it will be far later than you SMiLE Dreamers think, Capitol and the Beach Boys are playing games with us, blah blah blah") but has avoided any sort of logical discussion.

Really makes me miss the good 'ol days:

I've decided(after a recent personal message from AGD) to exit from the "Smile" discussion. Good luck to all of you.

P.S. I just can't get into "Country Air" and "A Thing or Two" overall. Not terrible, but more "meh" than most other 67-73 material.

imo

That part in Country Air where someone yells "Come On!" (Who does yell this? Anyone know?) right before the chorus - one of my favorite BB moments. I'll agree about A Thing Or Two, though...very much "meh" material.
5333  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does Brian have special mono mixes? on: August 06, 2011, 03:31:26 PM
Anyone wanna bet with me that an album named Pleasure Island will never be released? Its certainly not an official title for any forthcoming project from what I understand...

I think the title is great! But all the matters to me is that Brian realizes it as he appears to have it somewhat planned or at least vaguely conceived. I really think it could be Brian's last masterpiece. Let's free him from this role of summarizing his own career (Midnight's Another Day, Oxygen To The Brain, etc) and let him write some Mona's if that would please him! I'm sure it would please Mike to be involved!

Just imagine it, Pleasure Island: a 35 minute blast of Wilson/Love newly written classics, the grooviest album of the past twenty years!

Amen! The album had better be in mono!

If the process of creating this box set wasn't beset by some sort of permission problems or hang-ups(and  I've mentioned several possibilities, and stated that it could be some, all or none of those reasons), then we'd either be listening to the box set now, or celebrating at the announcement of a release date, and preordering at our favorite record shop or online dealer. But none of those things are happening.

Wow. Your post is full of hard evidence to back up your claim. Sorry I doubted you before.

Ok. Well, now that that's settled, on to more pressing matters.....does anyone here dig worms?
5335  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 06, 2011, 12:57:21 PM
But, obviously, unanticipated problems developed.

Evidence for this sweeping statement, please, and "it's not out yet" is ineligible.

Or to be less polite about it, and frankly, this is the only answer your post deserves - bullsh*t.

Bump. Seems to have been ignored for some reason.
5336  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 06, 2011, 11:43:45 AM
I bet you're a pain when you order pizza.

Actually not. I order pizza online, and have the exact same ingredients every time(Green Peppers, Onions, Portabella Mushrooms, Black Olives & Tomatoes)

Do you then sit there muttering to yourself "The pizza's not coming, my order's been cancelled, the pizza joint has been shut down, the delivery boy's probably had a crash.....etc .." until it arrives?

LOL Post of the day!

Why does everyone hate me?

I don't. Fight the system brother.

Also what the f did "nobody" do? Why do people hate him so much? It seems everytime people don't like somebody he gets accused of being nobody, hell even I was accused of being nobody.

Agreed. It's far better than the negative shite on the SMiLE Sessions thread.
5338  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 06, 2011, 08:32:11 AM
Okay, can we state for the record that Phil Cohen's official viewpoint on the SMiLE sessions is that there is a strong likelihood that they won't even be released? Can we make a banner on the top of the page that states this just so I don't have to scroll through 25 posts on every page to see this sh*t and so Phil doesn't have to keep reiterating it?

We get it Phil. We know your opinion. You may be right. You may be wrong. The point is we know your opinion.
5339  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 06, 2011, 08:04:01 AM
Sometimes, there's very good reasons why things don't happen as quickly as we'd like, and we should be thankful for that.  People, just think of it this way....why did "Good Vibrations" take so long to make?  Because it kept getting better and better!  If it had come out in, say, May of '66, it would have been good...REALLY good.  But not as GREAT as when it finally did come out.  In other words, do you want it NOW, or do you want it to be as GREAT as it possibly can be, even if you have to wait awhile longer?  Trust me, hold your breath...you won't be disappointed.

Reminds me of the legendary quote from a Hollywood producer in the 40s - "Dammit, I don't want it good, I want it Tuesday !"

Dude's name was Cohen, I do believe.

That's clever and rich, and perhaps... a bit of a jab!

Just so you know Andrew, most people named Cohen in America have no relation
to each other. It was a name commonly assigned to immigrant jews at Ellis Island
by customs officals, because the jewish immigrants  didin't understand that they
were being asked to give their name because they understood no English..  All
the Cohen's are in reality, Sharon, Schneider, Grossman, Spielberg and so on.

Phil Cohen however is marching to a drum I don't begin to fathom, whatever his true identity.

What's Phil Cohen going to do once the SMiLE box comes out and six thousand posters and lurkers
all know Phil Cohen said nineteen hundred times there would never be a SMiLE box

I'm well aware that there are many Cohens in the US who have or had no relation to Phil (I doubt he was any kin of Mama Cass, for example) - t'was what we over here in England call "a joke", albeit with a bit of a barb.

And yes, I'm also aware that a certain immigrant entered Ellis Island as Schmel Gelbfitz and left it as Samuel Goldfish.  Grin

No, I'm not related to Ellen Naomi Cohen(Mama Cass Elliot), and for my family, Cohen wasn't a name assigned by Immigrations officials. My roots in the U.S.A. date as far back as 1860 and there were people on both sides of the family named Cohen or Kohen. And for my mother's family, these people have been secular and assimilated since their arrival in the U.S.A.  in the 19th century, and(likely) even before that point. What does a family name have anything to do with the topic we are discussing in this thread?

But back to the subject. For this box set to be in record stores by early October, it would have to be in the manufacturing stage within the next 2 to 3 weeks. That is unlikely. You guys, who so fervently believe that The Beach Boys & Capitol are going to release this box set, have nothing better to do than to keep talking about me, picking on me or demonizing me. If there's no box set at year's end, I envision that some of you will try toP blame me for the project's demise, claiming that my impatience caused the compilers to throw in the towel, and abandon the project. In reality, any decision to abandon the project will be forced by one or more of the surviving Beach Boys themselves. I don't think that this box set is really worth all the effort that people on this forum(including, in the past, myself) having been putting into it.  The games (that Capitol & The Beach Boys have played with the fans) have drained much of the potential pleasure from the box set, even if it is someday released. While I still do an occasional post here, in the future, my CD collecting efforts will be directed elsewhere.

Are we on the Steve Hoffman board?

And yeah, the games that Capitol has been playing (the 45 singles, the articles, the interviews) are really pissing a lot of people off. Roll Eyes

Cohen, your ignorant responses on this board have drained the pleasure from this board. If you weren't such a troll people wouldn't be picking on you, people wouldn't be demonizing you. But you come here with the same opinion every day (that us Smile Dreamers are living a fantasy-smile-wet-dream if we think that this boxset will actually be released soon) and it got old after the first 50 times you stated it.
5340  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Songs that sound like other Songs. on: August 05, 2011, 10:07:58 PM
I turn on the radio today and every song had the same chord progression as Coldplay's 'The Scientist' or Sum 41's 'Pieces' (granted they weren't the first bands to use this progression) - but since I first heard those two songs i've noticed that every song on the radio uses the same boring progression. 2 minutes of this and I realize why I stopped listening to modern radio pop.

No modern mainstream bands try to find new chords and progressions and melodies - i envy those of you who, back in the 60s, could turn the radio on and hear a brand new fresh Beach Boys song full of insane chord changes and beautiful harmonies.
5341  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Who are your favourite female singers? on: August 05, 2011, 08:24:16 AM
Mette Lindberg of the Asteroids Galaxy Tour.
Joan Baez.
Astrud Gilberto.

Anyone fancy playing I-Spy?  I'll start.

I spy with my little eye something beginning with... S.

I just woke up from a dream where I was at a department store and people were fighting over bonus pre-release SMiLE discs. You could buy disc one of The Smile Sessions for $17.99 and it came with a code to see the track listing (online) of the boxset. I looked at the price and set it back in the bin....apparently even my subconscious is trying to tell me not to spend a lot of money on this thing Wink
5343  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: August 03, 2011, 10:22:09 AM
So compared to any other band I've listened to, The Beach Boys are the only ones who had basically incessant talking over many of their records (songs like Do It Again, half of Pet Sounds (the album) is full of talking*) - did Brian consciously do this as a joke? I mean, he was known for his perfectionism but his records are full of banter and noises...

*Right in the beginning of 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (mono)' (starting exactly at the 5 second mark and going through the 8 second mark) there is a noise of what sounds like a flock of chickens making noise - does anyone know what this is?
5344  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian instrumentals '65 on: August 03, 2011, 07:08:31 AM
add California Girls to the list and it'll be perfect

Yikes, Phil Cohen on the bloo spreading his ideas that smile won't come out. LOL

I believe Nostradamus predicted the rise of the Anti-Smile sometime in the late months of 2011...

No, but apparently Nostradamus HAS predicted that the world is coming to an end next year, so it would be a nice idea to issue this box set while the people that would enjoy it are still living.

Jeez Phil, you must really light up the joint everytime you step into the room...

LOL

Jeesh Fishmonk, it almost sounds like Cohen hacked into your account. Do I have to keep reiterating the facts about Capitol's SMiLE promotion thus far? Seems as if all my explanations have fallen upon deaf ears.
5347  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 01, 2011, 08:07:34 PM
It's ironic isn't it that Brian Wilson, the man who created Smile, is basically the last person in the world worth listening to when it comes to Smile release information.... Well after Phil Cohen that is.

LOL Finally a voice of reason here!

Seriously folks, why are we putting so much stock into what Brian is saying here? This is the same man that, when asked what the last movie he saw, said "Norbit", then when asked what his favorite movie of all time was, he yet again said "Norbit"

The man hates interviews with people he has never met before. He isn't a fan of the press, he isn't a fan of touring, he probably isn't a fan of SMiLE. Who the hell knows? Capitol said that SMiLE is coming out this year. Al said SMiLE is coming out this year. Mike said it is coming out this year. Brian has said he has heard the tapes and loves what he hears. Mark Linett gave a generous interview about the project - saying it would be out this year. Rumors have been floating around about SMiLE photos and boxset covers. Heroes and Villains and GV have been re-issued as singles! MOJO just released a re-edited (by Linett) Cabin Essence/Wonderful single! *DO I HAVE TO KEEP REPEATING THIS INFORMATION?

WHAT THE HELL DO YOU PEOPLE NEED?!???!?! Like I said not but less than 10 posts ago: Capitol doesn't need to give us a SMiLE factoid every 10 minutes. They have been promoting it subtly. Just because we don't have a tracklist to bitch about yet doesn't mean we're not getting a boxset. Just because Brian said "Maybe" in a stupid interview doesn't mean it's not coming out this year.

Not but three weeks ago I was very cynical about the lack of info, but then I was politely reminded about the promotion that has been going on RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES.

And now Phil Cohen calls us "SMiLE dreamers" for basing our opinions about the release around good evidence. Whatev.
5348  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 01, 2011, 06:08:49 PM
Actually only 2 months not 3. Really hope we get something soon, I'm half expecting a press release any day, and if August comes to an end without any word I'll be really skeptical about the prospect that this is still coming out.

I'll agree with you there. And yeah, just two months....sh*t, maybe you're onto something....it is getting down to the wire, eh?

Agh, between the rumors, the facts, and whatever else, I think it's coming out. Too much has been said in the last few months for it to fall to pieces....too much publicity, too much hype. It'll come out methinks.

And the month after next we'll be swimming in the glory of our pristine boxsets and after that...well, I know that climax will be like the month after Christmas when we were kids and there's nothing left to look forward to.
5349  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: August 01, 2011, 05:17:57 PM
I think we all need to chill out. Gad, i'm listening to alternatebrianwilsonpresents SMiLE fairly buzzed and am loving life...suggest others do the same.

There are still 3 months before the supposed release. I keep writing about the mojo single, the mojo article, the h&v and GV single. Capitol HAS been promoting the damn thing (they ARE behind these recent releases).... just because they're not on the horn every day spouting SMiLE factoids doesn't mean they don't care about the project.
