I'm glad the boxset did well on the Amazon charts...but I think this means the hardcore fans were the only ones buying for the mostpart. Can't wait for the promotion to begin and hopefully the 1 and 2 cd sets will start to see decent chart positioning.

The horrible translation makes me so thankful that I never used 'google translate' in college.

"A DAY IN THE LIFE"

One of my favorite Beatles songs - although I prefer it more in mono*. Consistently the Beach Boys outrivaled The Beatles in harmonies and arrangements.

*Today I started listening to 'All You Need Is Love' in stereo with my studio monitor headphones, and it was painful to listen to.

I wish Mark Linett would do some stereo remastering for the Beatles...In regards to stereo, there's a difference between making each instrument stand alone and creating a sonic journey that really benefits the music. The Beatles in stereo has never really done it for me. Okay, my rant is over Grin

I was talking with a friend about this the other day. I said to him that the Beatles were the most consistent at revolutionizing the rock and roll scene. Their songwriting (lyrically) is just unmatched. However, for sheer sonic beauty The Beach Boys can't be matched.

No Beatles songs sound as heavenly as Don't Worry Baby or In The Back Of My Mind. I love that heavenly spiritual sound - thus I like The Beach Boys a helluva lot more.

I think the Beatles deserve the #1 spot in many areas, but they have nothing on the Beach Boys when it comes to musical composition and vocal harmonies.

I just realized today that this will probably be the most momentous album I will ever listen to.

I've read books on it, argued and preached its glory, hoarded bootlegs and created my own mixes; and now all the SMiLE related tracks are finally seeing the light of day - properly mixed and sequenced by some incredibly talented people. I'm in anticipation for every single track on this set. I want to hear every track at once! - I'll want to skip ahead to hear 'Holidays', but I'll want to hear 'Look' first too....but every song is too incredible to skip over!

I'm really starting to get excited about this release! Can't wait for more interviews with Mr. Linett, the TV interviews with the Beach Boys (they'd have to do this, right?), the other promotion.

Brian, Dennis, & Carl Beer Drinking Buddies Ahhh! Happy Dance Beer Beer Rock!

I ordered mine for delivery on release day. And that's when it better show up.

Same here. Will probably get it ironically, just before my history of rock and roll class so I won't be able to listen until after.

Take it in and show the teacher!...if the teacher knows his history you'll probably get a bump in your grade!

The caption in Priore's book says it's Dick Maier. But yeah, had I not had his book I'd've agreed with ya Grin

Though I can't imagine the shipping being too fast from Canada...just an opinion.
_____

I ordered mine with regular shipping (from Amazon USA) - my packages usually get to my doorstep a day or two after I order with regular shipping anyways...I figured I could save a few bucks and wait the two days...I'm cheap lol.

Very much agreed. I suppose it really depends on the artist himself - I'm just not in a creative spot at the moment. And your song 'Falling Down' is a great one! Love that chorus!

I can't wait to get inspired to record again. I really love it, but lately there's been so much BS surrounding it for me that it's too tiring. Ugh. What a shame.
5212  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: About Making Music. on: September 04, 2011, 03:48:15 PM
^^Thanks John K! I love that mix of Kubrick/Lennon genius!
_____

I've virtually quit music at the moment. Between lack of good material, bandmates not working out, etc, etc, etc....it's a tough road to travel, and I just got sick of it.

Actually, I am working on a 'Wonderful' type song - with chords that aren't used too much, and some made up. I can't wait to finish that. Also going to record a cover of Sloop John B I think...but other than that I've given up.

I've been concentrating on writing - I've found there's a lot of room for freedom and expression in this field as apposed to songwriting. I've always felt limited by chords and the need for a melodic vocal (and a limited room for words)....with just plain writing there is no hindrance; and through written word you can create just as much of an emotion impact as a song. Just my opinion.

I know I'll go back to writing music on a more regular basis, I'm just tired of it for now.

Just took the new 'Good Vibrations' into Logic on a whim: I isolated the first .0075 seconds of the track and there's also the tail end of something there...it could be from 'Prayer' - an assumption based off of the fact that BWPS was used as a template.
5214  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SPOILER!!- Heroes and Villains and Good Vibrations from TSS on: September 04, 2011, 02:09:48 PM
It's on my copy - and I probably downloaded mine much later than everyone else (in response to the idea that Capitol possibly switched the tracks).

I just loaded the file into Logic....there's definitely a pattern there...it's almost unrecognizable by this program. I zoomed in on the 0 second mark to 0.1.2.43 - clipped the rest of the track off, turned the volume way up - it sounds a heckuva lot like the tail-end of a trombone flutter. Just my two cents.

Anyone here actually going to enter the music-video contest?

I'm thinking about it - although the concept I have in mind would be quite the undertaking - but it's sooooo tempting!

Really like it! That harpsichord melody is great!
5217  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions Price Thread. on: September 03, 2011, 06:24:12 AM
That $110 deal was crazy. Almost as though they put the box set on at cost then realised their mistake and added a profit margin then handling/ delivery etc a short time later. Same happened with the 2CD and 2LP.

I thought the set would be well over $200 - I jumped on that $110 deal fast....because I knew it wouldn't last long.

Either way, I'd still pay $170 for it....but I'm glad I saved $60!
5218  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's 'Dog Story' & Good Vibrations on: September 02, 2011, 06:44:18 PM
brian wilson . mike love
that's good vibrations
that's why it's so good

Agreed. Lines like "I don't know where but she takes me there...." and "She goes with me to a blossom world..." are really revolutionary....it's like 'Strawberry Fields Forever' before that song was recorded. The lyrics, voices, AND the music just take you away to a whole other place. I think Mike was in tune with what Brian was trying to achieve, but he was also, understandably, trying to meld previous success (boy-girl tunes) with Brian's new experimental phase....it worked perfectly.

Also, wasn't the Cello section in the chorus VDPs idea? Without that Cello thumping along in the chorus/coda that song wouldn't be half as good in my opinion.

5220  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Upcoming books? on: September 02, 2011, 06:05:48 PM
Last I heard, Mr. Desper was working on updating his book "Recording The Beach Boys" but then took a hiatus with it after getting sick with Shingles. He's back in business now, and I'm thinking if enough people express interest in it, he'll feel motivated to finish it!
Count me in on that one.  If it's anything close to as good as Geoff Emerick's book (Here, There, and Everywhere) on recording The Beatles, we're in for a killer treat.  I hope Desper brings all the personal band stuff into it like Emerick did.  If he only talks about the recording aspect, that will be ok with me, but it probably won't be as exciting.

Emerick's book is fantastic. And I too would LOVE a book on the recording techniques used in The Beach Boys music (especially during the Sunflower, Surf's Up, Friends period).

Brian's quote pretty much sums up why Disc 1 on TSS is the way it is; it's finished in Brian's eye, as well as Van Dyke's too. I am happy that I feel the same way, as well. I kind of feel sad for you guys that have so many issues coming to terms with this release instead of just enjoying it for what it is.

Agreed. Smiley

Call me crazy....I just logged onto facebook and Brian Wilson's page had uploaded another promo vid - it was titled something like "Brian Wilson talks about Good Vibrations - From The Upcoming Smile Box Set" - I started playing it and tried to find a way to link it (to share it with the board here), but I clicked off the page and now I see it was taken down. Just FYI.

The part of it I caught was just Brian talking about that walk with his mother where the dog starts barking and he is told about vibrations....probably the only consistent story I've heard him tell!
5223  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: September 01, 2011, 08:31:46 AM
Sorry if this has already been asked/answered (been away from the board for awhile)...

Was the new Heroes and Villains track pieced together based on a newly found acetate?

The inclusion of the Smiley version of the 'Boys and Girls' section makes this idea less likely....but perhaps Mark was given some artistic license to change a few parts while still basing the majority of the track on a newly found acetate....

5224  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: September 01, 2011, 08:17:50 AM
I hope that download code will offer both lossy (mp3) and lossless (FLAC) options...

… if anyone ever confirms it.     Embarrassed

Indeed. I think if something like this were to have happened it would've been mentioned in the box set promo vid....

I'd pre-order now. Tomorrow the price point will stand at some 50 bucks.

Did I miss something? Nothing's on the page and it says the release date is December 31, 2020...Damn Disney, screwing us fans around like this. This album will never come out. Wink
