Do you suppose he even realized his sons were rock legends?

If he had would he have sold the publishing?

That was my point.

I know.  I meant that as a concurrence.

Ahhh, whoops, I see Smiley

I am currently listening to a playlist I've made of the running order of Disc 1 using what I already have, and I have to say, it's kind of boring... unless there's more than a few new things on each track, I don't know.

I don't really care about the running order - as long as the existing tracks are mastered and a few goodies are peppered throughout, I'll be a happy man. If the new Heroes and Villains & GV are any sign of what is to come, I think we'll all be extremely happy come November 1 (Or October 31 for the lucky bastards across the pond Wink).

The new Heroes and Villains sounds incredible in mono - i've never heard this track sound so clear....ever!

Thanks! That fixed the problem.

PS...you could probably delete this thread - I thought this would've been a more widespread problem - apparently not LOL.

Oh hell yeah, why do you think he co-wrote Breakaway? Duh, to try and get a piece of the action. Murry Wilson, rock star. Two Step Side Step, Head Bang.

He knew they were hit-makers of the time - but he sold the rights to their catalogue in 1969, didn't he? - if he knew they were going to be legends I don't think he would have sold the catalogue for as cheap as he did (or sold it at all).

@mods or anyone with an answer here:

So when I am logged in to my Smiley Smile account I can't access my message box (which I used to find at the top of the page). There is nothing but the Smiley Smile Dot Net banner at the top now....whereas there used to be a few links to "new" and "recent" posts, and a link to my message box.

Is anyone else having these issues? Is there any way to fix this?

@Wee Helper - thanks for this info! News to me - fascinating to hear the link between 'dada' and 'Child' there.

I believe the "Child" vocals on BWPS are modern lyrics by VDP.  Worms had verse vocals written by VDP but were never tracked by The Beach Boys.  The others tracks I believe all had modern vocals written for BWPS.

The thing is VDP has reportedly said he wrote lyrcis for "Child" in 1966. Assuing the disc one version doesn't have verse vocals I hope, at the least, the booklet will have new info on their fate.

A scan of handwritten '66 "Child" lyrics in the booklet would make a nice treat....wonder how many goodies like that will be in the booklet!

5. I'm In Great Shape  (no vocals)
6. Barnyard (missing verse vocals)

Couldn't you just fly in the vocals from the Humble Harv demo?

As proven by Purple Chick, it would sound pretty bad...the piano from the Humble Harv tape would be overpowering.

I think that AGD, somewhere above, said that Mark Linett has used vocal-isolating software before (in the 2000 version of WIBN) - and thus he could probably do the same thing with this.

Since the lyrics were written on the RSD GV vinyl (at least for Barnyard), I think it's a good bet that they found the vocals for that song - why would they give us a tease about flying vocals in from a demo?

Just my opinion.

Good Lord. That really used to be one of my favorite songs. Honestly, now every time I hear it (The Beach Boys version), I think of babies, candlelight, and John Stamos doing a terrible Slash impersonation...I start to laugh at the imagery, then I get kinda sad at how he ruined a phenomenal song. And now this. WHY!?!?!?!?!??!?!
5187  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: September 07, 2011, 09:35:59 AM
No, it is different - the bits just before that string break, with the horn swells and stuff aren't vintage '66/67, as Purple Chick use it in their mix.

True sir - I think I was making the point that the basis of the 1966 track is very much intacto in 2004 - if it ends as per UM I don't think that's too much of an issue - I DON'T want them to add in 2011 recordings - strings, horns etc

I don't think ML and BOYD would do that so I'll be fine - KEEP IT VINTAGE

I think the lack of new string recordings in the new Heroes and Villains release suggests that there won't be any new recordings for this release.

For the more radical there's the Unsurpassed Masters set - And from that I really only listen to the WIBN session once in a blue moon.

The Official boxset is fine with me - everything good in one spot.

Ps...I'm really looking forward to these upcoming commemorative releases!

Confession time, everybody - who said it isn't going to be released in the poll at the top of this thread? I did, shamefully..... LOL

I voted "I don't like drugs and I don't like SMiLE, we might as well delete this discussion" - just to keep things interesting Wink

I've been wanting to read the book for a long time (I've only seen the movie) - I think I'll pick that up next time I'm at the bookstore. Haha now I'll be picturing nurse Ratched with a long red beard and balding head Grin

Read the two posts above with the RP McMurphy voice from the scene where he's fantasizing the baseball game....from One Flew Over...

And I wish everything that ghost just wrote were from actual events. Agh, perhaps in an alternate universe.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder - I find some songs from Beatles 'Love' to be better than the original album mixes - but this is only my personal preference.
5194  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: September 05, 2011, 11:29:05 AM
The Beatles goal was not to take someone to a real place in England, but to transport an idea of love and, later on, intelectualism to people. They did a fine job of doing so.
5195  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bad Smile Sessions reviews on: September 05, 2011, 09:19:26 AM
I'm glad the boxset did well on the Amazon charts...but I think this means the hardcore fans were the only ones buying for the mostpart. Can't wait for the promotion to begin and hopefully the 1 and 2 cd sets will start to see decent chart positioning.

The horrible translation makes me so thankful that I never used 'google translate' in college.

"A DAY IN THE LIFE"

One of my favorite Beatles songs - although I prefer it more in mono*. Consistently the Beach Boys outrivaled The Beatles in harmonies and arrangements.

*Today I started listening to 'All You Need Is Love' in stereo with my studio monitor headphones, and it was painful to listen to.

I wish Mark Linett would do some stereo remastering for the Beatles...In regards to stereo, there's a difference between making each instrument stand alone and creating a sonic journey that really benefits the music. The Beatles in stereo has never really done it for me. Okay, my rant is over Grin
5198  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: September 04, 2011, 09:04:16 PM
I was talking with a friend about this the other day. I said to him that the Beatles were the most consistent at revolutionizing the rock and roll scene. Their songwriting (lyrically) is just unmatched. However, for sheer sonic beauty The Beach Boys can't be matched.

No Beatles songs sound as heavenly as Don't Worry Baby or In The Back Of My Mind. I love that heavenly spiritual sound - thus I like The Beach Boys a helluva lot more.

I think the Beatles deserve the #1 spot in many areas, but they have nothing on the Beach Boys when it comes to musical composition and vocal harmonies.
5199  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: September 04, 2011, 08:08:48 PM
I just realized today that this will probably be the most momentous album I will ever listen to.

I've read books on it, argued and preached its glory, hoarded bootlegs and created my own mixes; and now all the SMiLE related tracks are finally seeing the light of day - properly mixed and sequenced by some incredibly talented people. I'm in anticipation for every single track on this set. I want to hear every track at once! - I'll want to skip ahead to hear 'Holidays', but I'll want to hear 'Look' first too....but every song is too incredible to skip over!

I'm really starting to get excited about this release! Can't wait for more interviews with Mr. Linett, the TV interviews with the Beach Boys (they'd have to do this, right?), the other promotion.

Brian, Dennis, & Carl Beer Drinking Buddies Ahhh! Happy Dance Beer Beer Rock!

I ordered mine for delivery on release day. And that's when it better show up.

Same here. Will probably get it ironically, just before my history of rock and roll class so I won't be able to listen until after.

Take it in and show the teacher!...if the teacher knows his history you'll probably get a bump in your grade!
