1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Doin' Time On Planet Earth on: August 23, 2023, 12:54:13 PM
I absolutely love "Being With The One You Love," but is anyone aware of even a semi-decent "Doin' Time On Planet Earth?"

I've heard REALLY muddy copies on YouTube, but am looking for something at least a little clearer.
2  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Great Lyrical One Liners or Phrases on: August 23, 2023, 11:40:53 AM
I was revisiting Coldplay recently, and was reminded just how hard the line "for some reason I can't explain, I know St. Peter won't call my name" always hits.

So, I'm just curious what one line or phrase in a song hits you all just the right way, or that you feel is pure gold.

Another one of my favorites is "the truth is you could slit my throat, and with my one last gasping breath I'd apologize for bleeding on your shirt," from "You're So Last Summer" by Taking Back Sunday.

I posted this on the other board in response to a poster, who rather in good faith or not, insisted that Mike takes being cancelled and/or arrested by the FBI "seriously," because parents and teachers have been arrested for giving their opinions at school board meetings, etc. politely.

Oh god, let me guess it was filleplage? Roll Eyes

Absolutely serious question: how on Earth did you guess that!? Haha!

I posted this on the other board in response to a poster, who rather in good faith or not, insisted that Mike takes being cancelled and/or arrested by the FBI "seriously," because parents and teachers have been arrested for giving their opinions at school board meetings, etc. But, this pretty much sums up how I feel about the situation:

It absolutely is free speech, and as a libertarian, I defend his right to do so, but that doesn't mean it makes any sense. I haven't seen them live since C50, and have no interest, other than maybe an Al show, as his tend to be the most interesting, so misunderstanding on being forced to buy tickets or not.

Agreeable to what he's saying or not, this just seems like a total killjoy. Most people go to Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, etc. concerts to forget life for awhile and have a good time. Personally, if I want to hear political commentary, I'll go to see Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, War On Women, or any number of other bands that lean into that as part of their act.

Mike had to use some pretty clever mental gymnastics to work this stuff into the show. Absolutely no one has any interest in cancelling The Beach Boys over "Surfer Girl" or literally any other song in their entire discography, other than maybe "Hey Little Tomboy," Mike trying to tie the band into this culture war is as cringe as the new anti-war lyrics of "Make A Wish" on Gettin' In Over My Head.

Comedians are a different story. Most exist to push the envelope to a certain extent. By and large, The Beach Boys have never been particularly edgy, and Mike attempting to push them in that direction (especially with shoehorned, non-humorous whatsoever "jokes") with this topic, at this time, is very disingenuous to both their legacy and their longtime fans.

As an aside, the assertion that teachers and parents are being arrested by the FBI for stating their opinions at school board meetings and the like is absolute, and unfounded nonsense, to put it politely.

I sure hope that John gets back with The Cowsills. They just put out a new CD and are still sounding good. The touring bboys band has become a joke.
I'm sure Mike's beach boys will be playing Trump rallies next year.

Better be careful! The other board is threatening to delete comments and shut down threads at the slightest mention of politics being involved in the firings.

Apologies if this was discussed elsewhere, but this is the first I'm hearing or seeing anything about this.

I'll say at the outset that I really enjoyed this. I'm at least a casual of most of the artists that performed, and a big Weezer and Fall Out Boy fan. That being said, I wish they would've dug deeper. "Do You Wanna Dance?" is a great production and arrangement, but obviously neither a Brian or Dennis original. "Barbara Ann" is O.K. as closer, but I'm not a fan, personally. And, we all know Pet Sounds is THE greatest album ever made. But, six songs devoted to one album for a band that has so much back catalogue is a little much, even if they were all respectfully, and sincerely presented.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Revealing Interview on: October 31, 2022, 09:35:34 AM
I am as Brianista as they come (even the excellent Scott Totten said once that he is a Brianista).
Said this, I think "Mike bashing" has gotten really old. It is almost as bad as repeating that Brian did drugs. The trollish one liners by OSD amuse me, it's like a common joke. But OSD does not write essays on Mike's hypocrisy. By the way, I am not so sure Mike is a hypocrite. Maybe he gets the difference between ruining oneself and indulging in some creature comforts, like a glass of wine. I smoke one cigarette a month, and love it.
I am a fan, besides of Brian, of all the Beach Boys. And that includes Mike. I can't forget that in that moment in 1993 when I heard the GV box aired in a store, and I became a rabid Beach Boys fan again, in just that moment, the first thing I noticed was Mike's awesome, unique bass voice.
The man is guilty of several things, yes, but he was a driving force in bringing much joy into the world, and is still working his a$$ out to do that. At his age, sure it's not for the money.

Agree 100%!

Has anyone able to get anything close to a definitive list of unreleased material from the Radio sessions?

Aside from I'd Go Anywhere, I recall mention of a remake of She Believes in Love Again, and didn't Al try to get Waves of Love included?
It seems that there was a little bit of crossover between material considered for Radio that was specifically recorded for Radio, and material that was recorded for other projects and subsequently became or almost became part of Radio...Is it fair to say that Daybreak Over The Ocean is as much a part of the Radio sessions, as such, as Waves of Love?
Was Don't Fight The Sea ever considered?

To my ears, it has always sounded like "Daybreak Over The Ocean" was the same version from one of the Mike bootlegs, with Al's vocals dubbed in. I've seen it reported that Brian is on there, also, but I can't hear him if he is.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian now in the studio on: October 25, 2022, 11:06:20 AM
An album of any kind would be absolutely amazing! I hope, whatever it is, that folks are supportive!

Well, I certainly really hope his vocals are much improved on any new tracks. Based on Right Where I Belong from the LPR album and his most recent tour, I’m about ready to consider it game over for BW and time to retire.

Well the guy is the other side of 80. Most of his contemporaries are 6 foot under, so from that perspective, he's doing okay.

I've always thought of Brian as a songwriter/producer first, singer/musician second.

I think even in the early days this can be seen with Brian's 'side projects' and contentment to leave the band in 1964.

If Brian wrote the songs and his current band performs them, that's about as good as it gets at this point, so I guess we kind of agree.

I feel like I might be in the minority here, but I think once Brian hits those higher notes, he sounds great.
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / blink-182 on: October 12, 2022, 11:06:58 AM
I'm pretty psyched for the upcoming tour and single. But, I'll be honest I think its a huge missed opportunity to exclude Matt Skiba. Not only did he help keep the band going when Tom quit the band for the second time, but I also liked the kind of "darker" tone that he brought to the band's songwriting. Its kind of similar to how I felt when C50 left out Blondie and Ricky.

Any other blink fans here? And, what are your thoughts on the "reunion?"
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Revealing Interview on: September 12, 2022, 02:29:26 AM
As absolutely disgusting and indefensible as Mike's comments have been, I do feel that citing his involvement in "Beach Boys" by Locash is a stretch. George Jones was notorious for the destruction that alcohol addiction caused him, yet in 2001, he collaborated with Garth Brooks on "Beer Run (B-Double E-Double Are You In?)," a "feel good" song about drinking (and driving). This was just two years removed from songs like "Choices" and "Cold Hard Truth," that laid bare what overindulgence can do. And, as someone who not only is most definitely NOT a country music fan, and who also feels that alcohol is indisputably the most destructive drug known to man, I never once thought of Jones as a hypocrite for recording what amounted to an early proto-bro country, buddy drinking song.
I say this not to defend Mike or that horrendous song, but because, as a political scientist, reaches such as this can have a detrimental effect on valid arguments.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 90 minute Eugene Landy Interview. on: August 22, 2022, 12:13:00 PM
It's crazy how Gene did have these little accomplishments in the music and mental health industries, that he was able to parlay into something much more grandiose.

I wonder if same sex marriage laws were on the books back then, if that would have been the solution to Landy's mounting problems. Could he have convinced Brian to marry him? Something makes he think he could have. Certainly Brian's comments at the time acknowledge he had drank Gene's Kool-Aid, in terms of the idea that family and other external forces were trying to bust them up. A well presented argument to Brian as to why marriage would be the ultimate security for both of them...I would imagine Brian would be somewhat resistant, but perhaps ultimately acquiesce?  Landy was on a collision course with ethics violations anyway, he could have stepped aside and, as Brian's husband, then been able to roll out the master plan for Brains and Genius (fantastic name btw)

This thought crossed my mind when I first heard the reports that Brian was referring to Landy as his "partner in life."
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: August 10, 2022, 07:31:15 AM
I like this one, though I'm generally not a fan at all of any of the Beach Boys' remixes. I'm a pretty staunch defender of the album, overall, but this song itself is not great. I always felt this was such a missed opportunity, and has always reminded me of the excitement around the news of a Chris Brown/Lil' Wayne collaboration and then we got... "Transform Ya" and it was just like "big oof."

But this mix gives it a little more energy and room to breathe and its awesome to hear Paul worked more and more prominently into the track.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Petition to Get Still Cruisin and Summer In Paradise Reissued! on: August 09, 2022, 12:08:53 PM
If we're going to suppress certain Beach Boys albums because they're not very good, then let's toss out 15 Big Ones, The Beach Boys Love You, MIU Album, and Keepin' the Summer Alive.
In an earlier time, some might have added Carl and the Passions to that list. Or even Smiley Smile.

Hey, hey! Don't you touch my Love You!! Hahaha!

But, seriously, this is the best point that I've seen made on this entire thread.
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Petition to Get Still Cruisin and Summer In Paradise Reissued! on: August 09, 2022, 11:51:49 AM
While the material on Summer In Paradise is definitely not up to Brian's standards, the actual contents of the songs is in keeping with their earliest subject matters and does fit in thematically with what casual fans associate the band with. Most casual fans don't care about Pet Sounds, Friends, Sunflower, etc.

I'm also not a fan of revisionism. If the group is to be celebrated, they should be wholly celebrated, warts and all.

While I think the various "Sounds of Summer" discussions online have delved perhaps *too* deeply into the topic of getting young/casual fans to listen to the deeper cuts, etc., I think the point here is that there is a concerted effort (e.g. FEEL FLOWS) to get people to change their "perception" of the band.

Also, "Pet Sounds" is pretty mainstream these days. It's not like some curio for hardcore fans. It never was. It has several of their most popular songs on it.

The new "Sounds of Summer" revamp is the perfect way to sort of temper the casual fan from the "surf/summer, etc." stuff into deeper stuff.

Doing an actual PUSH for "Summer in Paradise" right now would be ridiculous. I feel weird even having to explain that. It's not the subject matter even. It's not good music. Yes, I've typed a million times some variation of "Well, 'Lahaina Aloha' and 'Strange Things Happen' aren't that bad." But it's their worst album, by leaps and bounds. If you only ever wanted to simply reinforce the stereotypes casual listeners feel about the Beach Boys, I'd just stick to the early stuff then. "Summer in Paradise" is a poorly recorded, poorly mixed, poorly produced presentation of mostly bad and occasionally okay music.

I can't speak to whether letting something go out of print is "revisionism", but as I've said, I wouldn't oppose keeping all the albums in print, or even just quietly dropping expanded versions, etc. But again, the idea of doing an active promotional push for "deluxe" versions of these albums is so beyond *missing the point* of what's happening right now with the catalog and the team working on stuff. It's like stopping Brian's "Smile" live show from 2004 in the middle, and playing everybody a few tracks off of "Looking Back With Love."

I mean, as much as I enjoy the early stuff, I would argue that Surfin' Safari, Surfin' U.S.A., and a good chunk of Shut Down, Vol. 2 could be classified, while fun, as "not good," relative to not only the strong tracks on those albums, but certainly what we know comes after.

And, it kind of defeats the purpose of saying "look how multifaceted these guys are" when you literally hide any of their work.

Pet Sounds is a special case in their discography, though. As Bruce once put it, it is "one complete thought." I don't consider it being "mainstream" by casual fans being familiar with three songs from it. Its certainly not unknown, but its more widely known and appreciated by music aficionados than the fandom in general.

I'm not sure that letting something go out of print is revisionism, per se, but acting as if it never existed, officially, as was the case through C50, certainly is. I liken it to the constant requels that now dominate, especially the Halloween franchise, which as been reimagined once to remove the Cult of Thorn storyline, and more recently, to remove the entire brother/sister angle established in the original second movie. I take both, ignoring Still Cruisin' and Summer In Paradise and the Halloween reset to be extremely disingenuous to longtime fans, and a missed opportunity to easily educate new fans on the full history behind each.

Yes, I believe all of Still Cruisin' and Summer In Paradise are available in full in some way on Youtube, but that can't be relied on when they're constantly taking down copyrighted material.

I'm not for a MASSIVE push for these albums, as I'm a bigger fan of the albums currently getting attention, but quietly releasing or just putting them up on streaming services wouldn't really disrupt the current plans.

O.K. I'll admit it. As much as I completely disliked the remixes on the new Sounds of Summer, I really enjoyed this version. Although, I've always been one of the outlier fans of Gettin' In Over My Head.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 60th Anniversary Tour on: August 09, 2022, 08:46:55 AM
There is no need for a 60th anniversary reunion tour.  These guys do not owe us one either.  And despite the way the 50th anniversary reunion fizzled out near the end, it overshadowed the fact that it was still actually a very successful and high profile reunion complete with a great appearance on Jimmy Fallon's show among other appearances.   And it produced an album that was far better than it had any reason to be.  Even if some folks groaned over the production, it still is a better way to conclude the band's studio album career than with Stars & Stripes, Vol. 1 and especially Summer In Paradise.   The potential documentary is more than enough to recognize the band's milestone.

Not trying to derail the thread, but am I really in the minority of people who actually prefer Summer In Paradise to Stars & Stripes, Vol. 1?

I mean, admittedly, I'm not a country music fan, generally speaking. But, even with all the problems of Summer In Paradise, it just pains me to see The Beach Boys being used as a back-up band to mostly second or third rate country artists. The only redeeming quality for me is that the background vocals are stellar as always, and I quite like this version of "Caroline, No."

But, I absolutely agree that That's Why God Made The Radio is far and away a MUCH better ending for the guys than even a new studio album at this point would be. Even if I'd welcome it with open arms.

22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer 6LP Announced on: June 15, 2022, 04:54:42 AM
These mixes are an interesting curio. But, for me, personally, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to create NEW mixes for a greatest HITS collection.
I have the same issue with album versions, like "Be True To Your School," "California Saga: California" or "Help Me, Rhonda" showing up on hits compilations. These are all essentially the same songs, but are not the hits that people know and love.
While I'm not really a fan of the new "Marcella" mix, I'm not opposed to new mixes for specially marketed rarities, etc albums. I VERY much prefer the 2012 mix of "Rock and Roll Music" or fan mixes that I've heard of "Breakaway" with Brian on lead throughout the song and a breathtaking mix of "'Till I Die." I use them in my personal playlist, but if I was introducing someone to The Beach Boys or trying to expand their horizons of them, I would definitely default to the originals.
23  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Bonus Tracks That Are Better Than "Official" Album Tracks on: May 31, 2022, 10:53:49 AM
Just a quick thought of a thread before work. I'll definitely post more when I have the time.

What are some of the tracks that are relegated to being bonus tracks that you find just as good, if not better than songs in the official running order of a particular album?

For me, two just off of the top of my head would be the "I'm Feelin' Sad" from No Pier Pressure. Not only do I find the entirety of the song amazing and impactful, but for me, personally, it feels much more Brian Wilson than "The Last Song." I know a lot of people love that song, but I've never been a fan, at least not from Brian. It sounds much more in tune with a Dennis or Bruce song. And, to be honest, the lyrics feel kind of forced into addressing the then-ongoing Beach Boys' drama.

The other would be "Let It All Evolve" from Tears For Fears' most recent album The Tipping Point. I can't say that it should necessarily replace anything on the album, other than maaayyybbeee the closing track, "Stay," but I even like that one quite a bit. I haven't really thought about where in the cycle it would make the most sense to go, but its just such a great song that I feel it deserves better than to just be a bonus track.
24  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Album Closers on: May 22, 2022, 07:00:25 AM
If That's Why God Made The Radio sadly does end up being The Beach Boys' final album of brand new material, I can't think of a better album closer in all of music history than "Summer's Gone," although "Southern California" from Lucky Old Sun would be a close second for me.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why was Carl not replaced? on: May 22, 2022, 06:54:44 AM
I know this isn't the popular response (at least among general Beach Boys fans), but I personally would've been THRILLED to sit through a concert full of Brian solo material in his touring renaissance heydays rather than hear versions of live songs that I can already hear countless other versions of.

Brian's solo material is strong and though I understand why, I feel its been vastly neglected.

People want the hits and learning/remembering new material at their ages is difficult, I'm sure. Most performances of "That's Why God Made The Radio" were a little rough to say the least, at least the televised ones, so I'm not blaming Brian for not working a lot of his solo catalogue into his sets.

I'm just saying that his solo material is of merit, so it kind of undercuts that when its pretty much neglected altogether. And, in all fairness, outside of his cover of "The Girl From Ipanema," I revisit Mike's solo output VERY rarely. Again, I know its subjective, but just wanted to be fair speaking on the two with the most solo content.

For comparisons sake, though, Tears For Fears put out a brand new album a few months ago and I was more than delighted to see that they currently have 7 out of 10 cuts from the standard version worked into the setlist.

It would've been awesome, for me at least, to get a few more That's Why God Made The Radio tracks played during the C50. Again, I understand why not, but it would've given the album a little more relevance. Plus I absolutely LOVE "Shelter."
