Poor Carnie.
Her musical aspirations have been forever hindered by such a petty thing as her appearance. I can understand when she was getting into the really unhealthy territory and it being an issue, but ever since she lost all the weight, gained some back, lost it again, had some nose jobs, gained more weight and lost it again it seems she's been doing a whole lot less music than she should be doing.
I wonder if seeing Brian's unhealthy eating habits (such as devouring an entire steak in 1-2 bites) when she was a child had an adverse affect on the way she handled herself.

If you're going to be wasteful and print out easily-accessible online information about The Beach Boys for no good reason, I would think you should print out the contents of Bellagio 10452 instead of Wikipedia's pages on the group. At least with the former you know it's as accurate as possible!
Except for the bits I made up of course... which according to someone with the initials CK is all of it. Citizen Kane?

does anyone know what kind of shape EMI is in, as opposed to Capitol?
I think it is parent company EMI that is in the most trouble, no? I think The Beatles remastered catalog now being on iTunes might either help or hurt them. It all depends on where the money's going. Considering how Apple Corps. have been handling their royalties for the past couple of decades, it's safe to say that most of the profit is going to benefit people in The Beatles camp. Maybe Coldplay can put out a new album and save Capitol?

Rhino replaced my copy of BW '88 with the corrected one almost immediately after the release. Not only was the coda to "Melt Away" affected, but "Love & Mercy" and "There's So Many" featured different mixes as well.
Makes me sad I didn't buy the one with the different mixes; When you say "replaced" did you have to send one back to get the other? seconded - very curious! Yes, I did have to mail in the "wrong" disc to get the correct one sent to me. I hesitated briefly, but the earlier mixes were definitely inferior as far as I was concerned and the lack of the high vocal at the end of MELT AWAY was a dealbreaker (it's perhaps my favorite moment on the album). Bummer. I wonder if they destroyed all the returns, or kept them to sell as collectors items... Those of us who bought the CD in 1988 were, of course, spared any such dilemma. Mark will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I recall reading that when the 2000 reissue was compiled, it was discovered that there wasn't, in fact, one single master for the album, so the tracks had to be pulled from the vault individually. So the 88 CD has the alternate versions of songs? Don't remember hearing them that way. The 88 CD has the correct mixes. I wasn't aware of any "corrected" 2001 CD. Are we certain this exists? Even the version of the album on iTunes has he alternate mixes.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "Melt Away" end vocal round
|

I apologize if this has been covered before (repeatedly) but I couldn't come up with much in a search so I figured I would ask. In comparing my 1988 CD and vinyl of the Brian Wilson album with the 2001 remaster with bonus tracks, there is an obvious difference in the two mixes of "Melt Away". The end vocal round on the 1988 versions contain a set of high "ahh"s that aren't on the 2001 release. It doesn't sound like Brian to me. Perhaps it's Andy Paley? Anyway, was there a reason the compilers of the 2001 CD chose to use a mix that was different from the original release. Did it have anything to do with Landy? Personally I prefer the "ahh"s mix because they sound real pretty on top of Brian's vocals.

i love the stereo wouldn't it be nice (in cd/digital anyway). The mono WIBN on CD is muddy for some reason. Stereo lets it all breathe.
I think that's what Brian was going for. It's very Spector to have everything mixing together to create one giant noise rather than having it mixed so that you can pick out on instrument from another.

There's plenty of unused ideas and themes that Brian and Co. chose not to include in the 2004 BWPS. I reckon it to Pet Sounds when Brian opted to re-write "I know There's An Answer" and scaled down the vocal round at the end of "God Only Knows" to make it a little less 'modern'. Ultimately, I think Brian and Darian made excellent choices in terms of creating a nicely flowing piece of music.
However, I will admit I am a big fan of such things as the alternate Cornucopia lyrics of "Vega-tables" (listening to that version, one can easily picture Brian pounding it out on the sandbox piano with a big grin on his face and a stack of sandwiches beside him).
