I think there's something to be said for just making absolutely everything there is available to the hardcore fans. If there's some demand for it and it's not terrible, why shouldn't you? It's better to release it yourself than to have bootleggers do it for you.

My girlfriend is a huge Pearl Jam fan, and the cool thing about that band is that they release "official bootlegs" of every single concert they play. So she has every Pearl Jam concert she ever went to on CD. How cool is that? More bands should be like that.

I own over 3,000 CDs, and the very best and the very worst of those are both by the same band. That's pretty incredible. In all it's awfulness, 'Summer in Paradise' is actually one of the reasons why The Beach Boys are such an endlessly fascinating band and I appreciate it for that.

Oh, and I love the cover art.
78  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce Johnston (lead vocals) on: August 21, 2014, 08:10:51 AM
But it got me wondering. Bruce's lead vocal selections are few and far between on the other albums we appeared on, even the ones in the 80s and 90s

I think there's a simple reason why Bruce never did that many lead vocals. For any musician (or any other kind of artist, for that matter) to do anything there's gotta be a personal creative urge and/or public demand. Seems that there never has been much of either for Bruce Johnston leads.

Whatever anyone thinks of Bruce, he does have a few good qualities that seem to be very rare among famous musicians: he's not a bragger, he knows his place, doesn't feel the need to prove himself and he doesn't have to be the centre of attention. People don't go see The Beach Boys for Bruce Johnston or his songs, never have and never will. And it seems that Bruce fully realizes and has always been perfectly comfortable with that.

Probably a bit too much of a downer, but anyway:

This is how my meagre photoshop skills (and poor aesthetic judgement) reacted to that proposition:

Yeah, well... It seemed like a good idea at first, but once it was finished it's kind of like Brian has already died... Oh well.

By the way-a lot of these interviews from this mag are worth seeking out-it was a very high quality magazine in those days.

It still is, IMO.
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Must haves for a newer Beach Boys fan on: July 31, 2014, 06:57:01 AM
Before joining I had listened to every song on Pet Sounds, but not all at once.  I listened to the whole thing at once as AGD suggested, but it didn't do anything more for me than listening to the songs separately.
Just a suggestion: try again, but now at night, in the dark, with headphones on. That should do the trick.  Smiley
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Must haves for a newer Beach Boys fan on: July 31, 2014, 06:54:48 AM
I have been an active BB fan since about 2011 (before that was just a general liking of 60s music).  Since that time I've built a small collection of stuff.

50 Big Ones
TWGMTR
Concert CD
TLOS
Plus a song here or there from other albums.

At this point I feel I have all of the mainstream stuff that a casual fan might have, so where do I go from here?  For my birthday I plan to ask for MiC, and TSS for Christmas (I assume the box set is worth getting over the 2 CDs?).  At some point I'll also get Gershwin and Disney.  Other than that, is there anything I'm missing?

In my humble opinion, anyone who considers himself a Beach Boys fan needs to own, besides the hits, at least Pet Sounds, Smile (in any form), Friends and Sunflower. I always liked the familiar stuff (the 50 Big Ones material), but it wasn't until I heard those albums that I started thinking: wait, now it's really getting interesting... So many incredible gems on those albums that you won't hear on a lot of compilations, if any.

Anyway, do yourself a huge favor and don't spend your money on the Gershwin and Disney albums yet. Those are nice enough but not that relevant. Get the albums I just mentioned, then get everything else they released until 1974 (plus Love You), and then you can start thinking about Gershwin and Disney.

Here is my 2 tattoo, I wanted to be able to see the Indian(Brother Label) so I had it redone on my right arm.

I seriously considered getting that image tattooed as well. But I figured that a third Beach Boys tattoo would be a bit much, so I got a Beastie Boys tattoo instead.  Smiley
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Would you have liked more from Blondie & Ricky? on: July 20, 2014, 11:33:02 AM
Blondie and Ricky were great backing musicians, but I could have done without their contributions to The Beach Boys as songwriters and lead singers. Their songs are boring and just like their voices they don't really "fit in".

Those songs almost sound like, let's say, The Beach Boys took a couple of songs from their opening act and tried to sell them as Beach Boys songs...

Oh, wait...  Roll Eyes

Frank Ocean rapped on "Special Love," though the track remains unfinished and may not make the album.

Thank goodness for that.

Indeed. I don't like to criticize anything before I've actually heard it, and there are actually quite some rappers that I really like, but seriously... If you're making music that has nothing to do with hip hop, please don't ever bring in a "guest rapper". Please.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Beach Boys ULTIMATE Survivor: GOD ONLY KNOWS on: July 14, 2014, 10:06:25 AM
I think "Ultimate Loser" might be a bit too predictable most rounds to be interesting (is there any doubt Today!'s loser would be anything other than "Bull Sessions," or that Sunflower's would be anything other than "Tears in the Morning?").  I think solo albums would make for a more interesting place to go from here.

We have already found all the album losers (they are the first ones voted off). It would begin with rounds similar to Super Survivor. Four threads, each representing an era: 1962-1965, 1965-1969, 1969-1979. 1979-2012.

I thought about that too. Should be fun! It would be interesting to find out what this board thinks is the absolute worst Beach Boys song ever recorded, and which "losers" aren't really that terrible after all...

Anyone else think it's strange that Good Vibrations lost its own round but is now in the final?

It lost it's own round TWICE. Didn't win the Smiley Smile round and didn't win the Smile Sessions round either.

God Only Knows

Easily the best song ever made, by anyone.
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Beach Boys ULTIMATE Survivor: FINAL THREE on: July 11, 2014, 06:28:57 AM
I'm actually surprised Surf's Up didn't stick around to the end.

Me too. I expected that the final top 3 would be 1. God Only Knows, 2. Surf's Up, 3. Good Vibrations.
93  Smiley Smile Stuff / Polls / Re: Beach Boys ULTIMATE Survivor: FINAL THREE on: July 10, 2014, 01:18:03 PM
Least favorite of these three is easy: Til I Die.
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brother Re-Issues: Proposed Bonus Tracks on: July 08, 2014, 12:20:49 PM
Unfortunately the BB (etc) are holding on to the rest of the stuff. However, I am pretty sure many of the songs mentioned here will be released officially, but how many more fans will have to die before they release the stuff? Am I being selfish? Because I enjoy everything BB/Brian? "Give the people what the people want" (?) Huh

Of course I'd love to see (a lot) more unreleased Beach Boys material get an official release in the near future. But then again, an artist has every right to hold anything back if he for some reason doesn't think it's suitable for release. Of course it's frustrating to know that a lot of what the Beach Boys did release is much worse than a lot of what they didn't release, but still... It's their legacy, they will be judged by everything that's released under their name, so they get to decide what comes out and what doesn't. We as fans don't have the right to hear more unreleased stuff, we can only hope we'll get the privilege.

God Only Knows. Please don't let the most obvious one win.

The best deserves to win. And if GOK is the most obvious one, it's probably the best.
