Doesn't the people owning the footage have anything to do with this dvd? Crappo, such a waste releasing something attractive as this in such a horrible state..
The cover says that the film was bought directly from Peter Whitehead. And about how to get the DVD: I just asked at a local record store if they could order it for me, and they did, for 20 euros. So you Americans should be able to get it for less.

I never understood why Capitol was worried about Pet Sounds. I mean, at that time they usually took just two singles from an album, so two songs with hit potential should've been enough for them. And Pet Sounds had Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Sloop John B and Caroline No...

People do forget that he did eventually agree to sing on "Cabinessence". If he hated Van Dyke so much why did he use him on Summer In Paradise? (Ok bad example as that album would kill anyone off).
Mike always said he liked Van Dyke as a person but that he just wasn't into some of his lyrics.

Interesting question. Because almost everywhere you read about both Pet Sounds and Smile that Mike hated it and called it "Brian's ego music", Al disliked it because it was too progressive for his taste, Dennis loved it because he was Brian's biggest fan and Bruce loved it because, well, Bruce is probably one of the most positive people of the face of the earth. But you never really read what Carl's opinion was...

However, they got there - hasn't The Beatles' early 'death' as a group been one of the best things for their status and legacy in the long run? Oh, absolutely. Dying young is great for your PR. That's why James Dean in more popular than Marlon Brando, why Marilyn Monroe is more popular than Brigitte Bardot, why John Lennon is more popular than Paul McCartney... If the Beach Boys would've called it quits in 1967, their current reputation would no doubt have been much better.

I've got two copies of Sunflower on vinyl in perfect shape, one was 5 and one was 2 euros... Both are from a 1980 re-pressing though. The most interesting thing about SITSOM was that it was about musicians that hardly anyone knows, even though they played on hundreds of top 40 hits.
The same thing goes for the Wrecking Crew. If they'd make a documentary about them, advertise it as some sort of 'follow up' to SITSOM, mention the number of hit songs they played on and do some name dropping, I think it could be just as big a hit as SITSOM.

This Whole World and All I Wanna Do would have been 'cooler' lead singles. Forever and Slip On Through might have been okay, too. The rest of the album doesn't really have "hit single" on it. I really like Add Some Music to Your Day, but it's definitely not a early-70s FM song.
This Whole World and Forever definately would've been good singles. Tears In The Morning actually was a big hit single here (in Holland), so I believe that with some promotion it could've been a hit everywhere else too.

A total masterpiece. Like someone once said, "Pet Sounds" should be used in schools for music-education. The greatest collection of pop-songs ever. And only surpased by SMiLE.
Actually, "Sloop John B" was used by my music teacher in high school.
