So yeah, for some reason I decided to listen to Stars and Stripes recently. Its definitely not good, and not a fitting end to their recording career, but I think some of the recordings are decent. "The Warmth of the Sun", "Little Deuce Coupe", "I Get Around", and "Caroline, No" were all decent. The rest is from bad to very average.

You really should buy the "The Beach Boys - Nashville Sounds: The Making of Stars and Stripes"  DVD. Personally I always preferred  to watch this DVD instead of listen to the CD. You won't regret it, please believe me.

During the making of the 1985 video biog, the producers had to lay hands on 2-, 3-, 4- and 8-track consoles to playback/copy the session tapes so, really, could have been any one of quite a few people, some not actually employed by the production company.
And not to forget they used for these transfers digital 14/16 Bit Sony PCM Betamax machines. That's the reason the sound quality of the SOT discs is so crystal clear. Old Man

i was lucky enough to get Carls both albums on cd when they were re-released on cd in 1990 by Caribou. There are some great songs on them, also on the first cd !

In Japan only, however.

No, in Europe (at least in Germany and the Netherlands) as well.

Are you sure about that? I remember seeing them in on of the local CD stores, but these were Japanese pressings. In contrary to the Beach Boys 70ies albums and Dennis' POB, these weren't part of the Epic "Digitally Remastered" series. Same for example for Blondie Chaplin's first solo album: I could buy the first CD issue in the early 90ies here in Holland, but it still was Japanese import.

To be honest - I'm not 100% sure. I once (1989-1993) worked for one of the biggest record stores in town and I do remember that I listened to both of Carl's solo albums for the first time back then (and didn't liked them). Since we also had a very large amount of Japanese import CD's it is possible that these were the Japanese pressings. Anyway I also do remember that an old friend of mine bought both albums for his collection and I will ask him next weekend to check out if these were Japanese or German pressings - keep the fingers crossed he still have them.

Billy says it was Ed Teduri (he's not sure of the spelling).

Yes, it is Eddie Tuduri (born in Derby, Connecticut) who little later played in Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band around 1974/75 and also wrote the song "Louisiana Belle" together with Jerry McGee for Rick.

Mark, has all of the Beach Boys' tape library been transferred to digital sources?

Not yet. We are starting to make hi-res digital safety copies of the most important multi-track masters.......

Hey Mark,
Just one question from engineer to engineer. Grin What kind of technique and equipment do you use making hi-res digital safety copies of the analogue tapes? You can go into detail if you like.

Best,
Scotty
