Meaning ?? . . . it never existed?

(forgive my ignorance)

477  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 60s albums rushed? on: January 26, 2015, 02:20:58 PM
The thread about Lana prompted me to post this -

Is it known whether the Beach Boys Lana and Farmer's Daughter are the same recordings as the Johnny Dew acetate versions?

It has recently come to my awareness just how much Capitol appears to have wanted to rush out albums and therefore Brian was forced to rehash ideas in order to satisfy the label.

Examples I can think of:
-the above acetate being used;
-the Lonely Sea being used after essentially being an outtake from an earlier album;
-Brian re-visits tracks recorded for other projects as Beach Boys records: Rabbit's Foot / Our Car Club, Big Beat / Do You Remember?

I'm sure there are more examples, these are just off the top of my head.

I guess I'm asking if you think Brian would've cannabilised his own work like that anyway, or whether it was in an effort to provide Capitol with product?

Only the Beach Boys could have a single mix stashed away for a song that gets kicked off an album because the album lacks a feasible single!

It will be great to hear a clear master of this!
479  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could only keep one album from the 1968-1973 period? on: January 26, 2015, 01:44:03 PM
Funny, my gut reaction was Holland, but thinking about it, I would rank 20/20, Sunflower and Surf's Up higher.

I think I'd keep 20/20 over Sunflower because the Bruce tunes from the latter really grate with me for some reason.

C-man, I hear where you're coming from, but the graphs don't lie!

Just because they can't notice the difference, won't stop some folk (myself included) stumping up extra cash for a difference they can see.

Heaps of stuff goes on that we don't notice, but doesn't mean it doesn't affect us.

They also have Big Beat 1963 for under $11-

Thanks for your trouble Matt.

I have found LAC to be quite fussy, and so agree with your reasoning - the jury is still out!

But I thought I saw KAEOS64 at QOBUZ -

483  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mono and Stereo Versions on: January 21, 2015, 07:15:50 PM

mono mixes:

6 - Never Learn Not to Love (45)

Available on the Capitol Years 4 or 6 CD box sets, 1985ish, then reissued more recently in Australia as a 4 CD set (sans booklet). I'm assuming it the stock 45 mix because it has the reverse cymbal intro.

Anyone downloaded this from QOBUZ and checked for lossless source via - http://losslessaudiochecker.com/  ?

There is software called "lossless Audio Checker" or something like this - this will quickly and easily verify whether or not the files have been downgraded before being encoded to FLAC - ie. it checks the spectrum and assesses whther there's been a loss of any particular frequency range!

Could someone please use that and let us know?

It's free :-

How can you be sure it's lossless and not just FLACed from iTunes or Amazon?

There are ways to know after you've downloaded, namely use software like "Lossless Audio Checker". The answer will be clear.

I think it is reasonable to assume that the files are from the master quality source, rather than an iTunes download - qobuz is a reasonably reputable service, not some two-bit pirate operation. The price is pretty small.

For those that were screaming out for a lossless release of this set - it's available to some Europeans -

Okay, here's the link!

488  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: *Merged* Brian Wilson current album thread on: September 28, 2014, 07:13:56 PM
Didn't "Summer Means New Love" have guest vocals?

Possibly so, but I haven't seen any detail yet.
489  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: *Merged* Brian Wilson current album thread on: September 28, 2014, 06:34:52 PM
Right Time - AJ Lead Vocals
Run James Run - AJ Lead Vocals
Last Song - LDR
On the Island - Zooey
Sharing a New Day - Kacey
Guess You Had to Be There - Kacey
Special Love - Frank Ocean
Sail Away - ??

Hopefully Brian will have more than 8 songs.  I didn't realize how much of a collaboration album it was until I made this list...

Add:
Sail Away - that would be AJ & Blondie Chaplin vocals.
Summer Means New Love [1965 track with lyrics]
Danny Boy - ? has this been nixed?
Saturday Night on Hollywood Boulevard - ?

here's hoping for - Last Song w BW lead as the japanese bonus track!!

Stephen's books are great books. His primary focus is Gary Usher whom it appears was a good frind of SMP.
491  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Wipe Out music video - I gotta know the story on: August 12, 2014, 05:53:40 PM
Brian is definitely in it - just at the very end a very brief cameo - maybe 5 seconds from memory. One other is with him - think it could've been Mike. I bought the
DVD based on this.

This is all just from memory as I refuse to actually pull out the DVD just to add some minor details.
492  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tricia on: November 14, 2013, 04:09:26 PM

One mix of First Love (pretty sure it's the original one) has a charming version of "Viggie" with a cute ocarina hook. Carl's very prominent on "Brian's Back", of course. Almost a co-lead vocal.

Thanks so much - is there any "particular" "release" [ahem] that contains the "remix" version.

I believe that there is a 2 CD "Darkside" [ahem] - which would seem to be the original.
493  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tricia on: November 13, 2013, 07:49:01 PM
I'm with Jay & Smilin Ed H, Carl is definitely there. Maybe Brian too, though I can't decipher for sure if it's in fact him. The song itself is good. Except the slightly off guitar solo.

Carl is very obvious on several tracks of the original First Love mix.

Finally someone has reminded me there was a remix of the First Love album - is there any easy way to know whether a particular version is a first mix or re-mix, other than listening really hard for Carl?

Any tracks in particular that feature Carl pretty prominently?

494  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: Pet Sounds Magazines on: October 27, 2013, 03:54:58 PM

Thanks for these - how big are the original pages?

I too would love to see higher res scans.
495  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Japanese editon of \ on: October 27, 2013, 03:37:39 PM

Pretty sure this is the disc that was cloned to be disc 1 of "Smile (Bits & Pieces)" 2 disc set a few years later - so I hear.

Similar packaging, but incorporating an extra disc showcasing some (at the time) more obscure or recent "finds".

496  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: March 14, 2013, 03:22:49 PM
Still no real news on the set then?

It's disappointing not to have heard anything. I'm tipping a pre-Xmas release at this stage, but hopefully I'm wrong and we'll have a track list and official release date by the end of March. Is the box showing up on the Capitol release schedule yet?
497  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: January 20, 2013, 04:23:39 PM
AGD, Thought you might know - is no news good news re this project? Still on track for April or have I missed something?
498  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surfin' Safari Stereo/Mono reissue on 2 CDs on: January 20, 2013, 04:19:56 PM
I got stiffed by Brad on both that CD set and an expensive leather bound - set of photos.

The man has not an honest bone in his body.

I doubt he ever even had a copy of those tapes from which to make that First Wave set. In my estimation, he just worked up a plausible "sessions" track listing and proceeded to take orders. I still have a copy of the track listing somewhere amongst my stuff.
499  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Where is that %^&$@#&* MIC Box Set @#$%^&*(!!! on: January 20, 2013, 03:41:12 PM

Which is still as many as Al, Carl and Bruce put together (not counting co-writes with Brian). It's also something like a third of all the songs he wrote for the band (as opposed to his solo stuff).

Dennis was more prolific and more of his songs remained unreleased. Therefore, there were more of them to choose from when comiling the GV box! simple.
500  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Where is that %^&$@#&* MIC Box Set @#$%^&*(!!! on: December 21, 2012, 04:01:49 PM
Obviously the box will be more or less chronological, just like it's predecessors, The Capitol Years (20th anniversary) & Good Vibrations (30th anniversary).

Not sure why we didn't get a box ten years ago as well.

Let's just hope the original Sail On Sailor demo is on this thing.
