Thanks for the link, but this is not new. I recorded this with my VCR purely by chance around 1990, here in Australia on a Saturday morning video show called "rage". It originates from 1988! Great to finally have it in pristine quality though! Thanks again. PS. I'm now hoping (wishing, praying - it might come true!) for a "playback" video release, perhaps not all 18 tracks ("Rio Grande" might be a stretch), maybe even some tracks not on the CD. Obviously not going to happen, but how good would it be to have 10-12 video clips compiled - there's already ample live material released. How many "video clips" has Brian had over the years (for studio singles) anyway?

Geez there is a lot of mixed reactions to the Paley material. Frankly, I think the production is some of the best of Brian's solo career. It's much easier to listen to than the weirdness of the GiOMH remakes. When Soul Searchin' and You're Still a Mystery came out on Made in California, the vocals sounded too plain. The harmonies added on Soul Searchin' as well as the added embellishments to the busy production also made the song sound a bit hokey, compared to the original boot. It is a real privilege to hear Some Sweet Day in its original form. The vocals aren't the greatest he's done, but they are heartfelt to me, the remade Paley vocal tracks sound robotic and without depth, it doesn't sound as spontaneous as the sessions allegedly were. I would like to see a whole album of the original Paley stuff released some day...
I'm just working with the premise of the thread. I like you enjoy the Paley stuff and think it'd be worth an album. If there's not 13 tracks there that together would make a better album than GIOMH . . . .

Looking at the timings of some of the tracks on this compilation, it seems to me that several of the tracks will likely be different to what we have. The live tracks will need to be edited differently - looks like Brian talking about the Flintstones movie might be a goner! [Reminiscent of the 1985 Malibu Emergency Room concert where he talks about royalties derived from David Lee Roth's release of California Girls!] On the upside, by my reckoning, Midnight's Another Day looks to be 12 seconds or so longer than the previously released version. I don't recall if that was one of the tracks that was "shortened" for the That Lucky Old Sun release, but it would appear so?? Also wondering about the possibility that Soul Searchin' is the original "solo" version sans Carl Wilson vocal. A possibility at least. Time reveals all!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Video Clip for Love And Mercy 1988

Just wanted to see if anyone knows if there is a decent copy of this clip around. I know that it featues Brian for a good part of the clip sitting sideways at a piano or organ, as well as studio type footage.
I was looking for it online and 1 because of the biopic of the same name it isn't really easy to find and 2 I even saw that wikipedia has an entry saying it doesn't exist but I know it does.
Any help would be gratefully rec'd!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / First Love by Mike Love remix question

I never know if my questions warrant a separate topic or should be in the "insignificant questions" thread - anyway, I always just post to a new thread, since that way I figure more people are likely to become more informed by reading them, rather than ignoring an "insignificant" one.
With Mike going back to the studio, this got me thinking - so here goes - this 1978 unreleased album was "remixed" and shopped around again a while after initial attempts.
My question is - What were the changes made, and does this result in 2 versions of the album, or really just a couple of tracks that were altered? Who did the remixing, when etc. would also fill in some of the blanks! Ie. any detail in answering is welcome.
Thanks

Yeah, there is no reason to think he's saying the vox only is new to the new box. "There is a box set they put out several years ago, and they're getting ready to do another one, which is the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds, um, where it's just a CD of just the vocals. It's a multiple CD set, and it has just the vocals on this one CD." (15:23)
The mention of the new set is more an aside. His comment about the vocals-only disc is referring back to the old box.
Correct - and on a careful reading I suspect the 50th Anniversary Edition is the BluRay Audio version which seems to have been delayed, possibly until the exact 50th anniversary??!!??

One of Carl's other great legacies was the sheer volume, beauty and skill with which he provided backing vocals for other artists - Although I haven't counted, I would suggest there'd be around 100 guest vocals out there for other artists.
I might be over-estimating the number, but not the quality of these.
Notable among these are "Don't Let The Sun Go Down" for Elton John. I think there were quite a few others that became hits . . . "Wishing You Were Here" (Chicago), "California Girls" (David Lee Roth) come to mind.

also, lets keep it positive towards sharing evidence, sources, theories, etc? We're all just trying to gain and share insight here.. its not like you can listen to SMiLE the wrong way:)
On that note - I at one point I thought that maybe Brian just recorded under the title H&V, notwithstanding that he may have been working on other tracks, because he was being hounded for a single by Capitol. Don't know if that's likely or even possible, but it might provide one explanation for some of these sessions. I don't know enough about it to say. And as I type this, it occurs to me that someone mentioned Whistle In - would those lyrics fit over the "All Day" track?

FYI, HV pt1 was a vintage Brian Wilson mix and from what i understand "pt2" was taken from a reel with those sections in that order (but not spliced together...can someone confirm?)
Pretty sure there's a reference for that in the Priore book "Look Listen Vibrate SMiLE". The theory goes that a good portion of the Heroes and Villains (Sections) track from the 1990 twofer was what you describe. Linnet mixed based on what Brian was heard saying at the sessions and the order of the pieces on a "comp" reel - starting from the "Gee" section and finishing immediately before the "false" barnyard tag. I don't think I've ever come across a "firm" confirmation that this is right, but that's not saying it isn't or it hasn't been confirmed. BTW - I recall from when I got that CD in 1990 that the CD player I had at the time displayed SUB-INDEX information, which in essence let you know where Linnet had spliced pieces together, or, in other words, letting you know when each "section" started. I'd love to know if there is any modern CD player or software that can extract this subindex information??? Anyone know?
