Hmmm, I wonder when this set is coming out
Okay - now you're talking. If it was before mid-May we'd probably have some solid info by now. I was hoping for June which would be early Summer - plus I just want this asap. The 22 July date, although not a Friday is the best lead we have - just thinking outside the square here for a mo - that date is a Thursday, which if this box was to be released on the Friday morning in New Zealand, Australia etc. - that would still be Thursday in the U.S. - what do you guys think of that logic? My money is on 23 July for the time being (until I change my mind . . . again).

I wasn't bothered or offended, I was just considering how others might be in light of the previous comment. I know that wasn't obvious from my post.
+ 1 I must say that I myself do a fair bit of stirring. Now I feel bad that I made a point of it. I don't take anything too seriously, so don't stress on my account. For the most part I find it's a pretty good group here and we all understand each other well and no-one sets out to offend anyone.

I don't care about who mixes and different this and that. All this is that! As a long-time fan - 50 years+ - I'm just happy there is "new" material coming out, legally. Hopefully I'll stay alive, trying to avoid this damn corona, for many years. In the next few years we'll hopefully get to hear more from the best era in the BB history. So stop bashing, stop those silly meaningless discussions, and just be happy there is "new" material coming out at all! I'm happy for every little snippet that comes out. Wishing a Happy Easter to all BB fans and prominent guests of this board!
Whilst I concur that any project that holds a stethoscope up to the Sunflower / Surf's Up era is going to be interesting and worthwhile, to adopt the mentality that we should be happy with what we get is to lay yourself wide open to a good soap-dropping in the prison shower from the forces of capitalism. Well, that choice of metaphor is just class all the way . . . hardly likely to be offensive to anyone.

Isn't the simple answer to all of this that if you want the original, then buy the original. Scour eBay and hundreds of other sources until you get what you want. If you want pristine sound, albeit not quite what Carl (& Stephen did in mixing), buy a new release.
I'm not sure why people feel so "entitled", often to an impossible dream.

And in Linda's case, she's not selling songs or publishing because she's known as an interpreter and not a songwriter. So they're buying her image, her celebrity, her persona as the brand? I don't know how one would quantify such things. It's the actual recordings isn't it? - that is, the copyright in them.

Personally if Desper is really being left out of the conversation, I think it's needlessly dumb. His sound is what made those albums what they were in the first place. I can understand not wanting to commit to new quadrophonic mixes, but it sounds to me that the archivists just want to rush the music out, and are probably underbudgeted. But in the end, I don't come into this set for anything else but the music, and assume that there are always going to be politics at play. That's the nature of being a Beach Boys fan. It's messy, and you gotta wade through all the politics in order to get into the music. Hopefully we can hear from Desper's perspective, but in the end, the fact that this music is getting reissued in the first place is a cause for joy in and of itself.
Totally, Steve Desper was an integral part of the 1970s BBs sound...
+1 to both of these posts. Much respect to everyone involved behind the scenes in championing this release, and to Mark, Alan, and Steve. Politics suck. 4 years of Trump malarky and a post from S W Desper triggers the comment "Politics suck". That's what I call late to the party. Disappointed, like most people, that Desper has had little/no involvement in this, but this group has to remember that what we might want isn't always going to be commercially sensible. I'd love a 32 bit / 384 kHz release of every Beach Boys thing in existence (in multitrack). . . but it doesn't mean it makes sense for it to be released. If there's been infringement of SWDs copyright then he has his rights - but we don't know that, and the last thing any of us want is a further delay to the set.

July 22 according to Mr Desper (source Endless Harmony board)
Well that's a little disappointing - but I'm certain it will be well worth the wait. Great also that Desper is in the loop, which might indicate he's had substantial involvement.

Need my feel flows box set
Maybe spending some time with your Smile Sessions or Made in California box sets will tide you over until you can get your fix (or even your Capitol Years or 30 Years of Good Vibrations box sets might help). I'm just guessing we've got say, 11 or 12 weeks to go.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Contact for Mark Linnett and or Alan Boyd?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best way to go about contacting Beach Boys archivists Mark Linnett and Alan Boyd? I realise that they probably don't want to be bothered directly by BBs archive enquiries so this may be a long shot, but I'm asking just in case anyone has any pointers. My enquiry regards checking to see if they were aware of a particular BB archive item for potential use in future projects. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Sent you a PM....... Mark Woo hoo! I smell a future release coming from this, although the vage description of this "archive item" doesn't tell us much - the leg of a broken chair Dennis threw at Mike on stage? Hopefully it's actual music of some kind.

I think Mike will go on performing until he just can't do it anymore - following in the footsteps of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, B.B. King.
Are you using "can't do it anymore" as a euphemism for "dies" - ? That's what it sounds like. And I agree. There is, of course, that famous quote from Dennis (or was it Bruce?) about wheelchairs. So Mike wouldn't be the first or only BB to think like this. Yeah - okay - happy birthday Mike, for a few days ago.

Mike was not interested in having this album reissued on CD, let alone in high def. He was approached several times by a legit CD reissue label and declined to proceed with a digital release.
Really? I'm not saying I don't believe you, but do you have sources for this? I mean, with the amount of goofy Mike Love artifacts out there, it's interesting that as CenturyDeprived basically said, this would be the thing Mike would wanna bury and keep away from easy public consumption. Also I know I've been on this one for a while, but it's also a shame that there is nothing available digitally from Mike's band Celebration except for the appearance of the song "Almost Summer" on a CD called (yep, you guessed it) Guilty Pleasures. Even if the whole Almost Summer soundtrack couldn't be licensed, one would thing there coulda been a Celebration anthology released with the all their songs from that soundtrack along with along with their self-titled album. Best to forget Disco Celebration though. Maybe leave that in obscurity. I know there's a moment in the 1989 BBs campfire sessions where Mike seems to want to bury the LBWL album when Brian brings it up. It's pretty shocking to hear the album as obscure as that brought up by Brian almost a decade later. Mike seems genuinely embarrassed, although he plays it off in a joking manner. Granted that was 32 years ago, but that's some decent evidence that he's certainly not proud of that work, and I don't think it ever got well reviewed or had many fans. How Mike could years later give the greenlight to any number of other more recent atrocities that he has released under his own name baffles the mind, because it would seem that at one point he at least expressed the ability to be embarrassed by his own work when it was substandard. I was going to mention that same moment - Mike was clearly embarrassed by the mention of it. I suspect - and have read, although I'm very much paraphrasing - that in the wake of Dennis' solo effort Mike was quite jealous of all the positive attention Dennis got. No surprise there. Suddenly within about a year of Pacific Ocean Blue - Mike has 2 albums worth of unreleasable solo material ready to go - and no-one would distribute it!! I seem to remember also that there was a bit of an issue that arose when Mike was away doing the Maharishi's TM Sidhis course and the CBS contact was signed - precluding the release of solo albums. I think Mike may have been furious. This is just from memory, but I'm sure it's in Steven Gaines' book. Point being, I think Mike was desperate to go solo -at that time- and then when his album didn't sell I think he realised solo albums were never going to be his strong suit! There's also the quote from, I think, the press conference after Dennis' death. Something like "We are not disbanding. We have tried specialisation, it doesn't work as well as the togetherness of the group". That one appears in the An American Band doco towards the end. Interestingly, post Mike's album and pre Dennis' death, in the middle there is the Mike and Dean era and also the 1982 recordings with Adrian Baker.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Weird Smile Bootleg

I tried to search the internet but I couldn't find it there here's the case:
two days ago I came across a smile bootleg in a shop were they sell second handed junk. It was a very ugly printed thing, with the smile shop cover in black and white. Almost like it was foto-copied. The back had no artwork and only listed the songs. The cd started with California Girls and Sloop John B and maybe with some other pre-Smile tunes. Heroes and Villains, Tones, Barnyard and Bicycle Rider were on it and so were two versions of Surf's Up. I opened the booklet and there was a funny excuse about the quality of the sound of the cd. Also it said that the cd started with an alternative take of Good Vibrations. It also talked about 'Do You Like Worms' although there was no mention of that song on the back (bicycle rider was however).
Very weird, anyway, since I have Project Smile I didn't bother to buy it, because it didn't even have the nice colored artwork, most SMiLE bootlegs have. But I do want to know what it is, anyone have it?
btw any word on a reissue of Pacific Ocean Blue and/or (American) Spring?
I believe that the bootleg you are referring to was on Sphinx Records - SXCD 008 was the catalog number.

Not sure of what year, but I have an old trade CDR of SMiLE - the Smile Research Labs version - SRL-001. I think it was first released maybe 1989 or 1990. Bit of a forerunner to the Sea of Tunes Unsurpassed Masters Vol 16 in some ways.
Anyone know the exact year it came out?

Who is on Spanish Kokomo?
Just had a listen to this - it's really not one I listen to often. Unlike the regular version I don't hear Carl and I do hear Brian. Who else is on it?
I'm assuming J Foskett, Mike, Al & Bruce. But is there a definitive listing somewhere?
