53  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When Beach Boys sound like other Beach Boys. on: March 28, 2010, 11:38:38 PM
Very interesting thread, since i started to listen the beach boys thirteen years ago, iīve bee curious about the peculiar sound of their voices. Just as the beatles and the byrds, they have a very unique sound. I used to imagine that the magical effect of the vocal harmonies of the beach boys was due to the fact that each individual voice was related to another; i mean, the voices of Brian and Mike are on the top and the bottom of the spectrum respectively, but in the middle yhe voice of  Carl sounds like Brianīs but at the same time has itīs own quality; Alīs voice sounds like brianīs but a little bit Mike too and Dennis and Bruce did sound like other beach boy sometimes to. So in the end its like  just one voice with different textures!

Thank you for the thoughts and insights guys.

I will take into account your advice Luther, particularly the thing about the background vocals, iīm still strugglin to get the rigth distribution in the mix. Thanks a lot.

hey louielouie,

i don't think you should be embarrassed about your recordings. it's actually much better than a lot of people could muster. It's also a very interesting song and I like the way you used the guitar.

i wish i had more to talk about, but I like it.

Thanks for sharing.

Glad you like it warnakey, thank you. Smiley

Wow, they bombarded the poor man  Roll Eyes

I thought Al was going to go blind by all those cameras.
That made my day!

Same here!, how good is to see Brian and Al together.

I enjoyed these, very unique sounding (thanks for accepting my friend request too). I like the sound of the keyboard on 'Last sorry message'. I liked the vocal work on the songs, it has a lot of real enthusiasm and passion. That is praise but that's because I liked it.

Thank you very much matt zeus, i really appreciate your kind comments.

btw, my one and only attempt recording with the little Luther--presumably ever, since I am returning it to its owner tomorrow--should be posted presently. Just gotta mix it quick.

Canīt wait to hear it!,  iīve never seen anything like that little bass. I wish i could play it.
59  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: Some little songs on myspace on: January 15, 2010, 01:35:38 AM
louielouie, I guess I didn't mean that praise is a bad thing, mind you. Just that the empty, few comments don't mean a lot, as opposed to a (hopefully, ideally) more involved community willing to be RESPECTFULLY honest about each other's work. We don't have to like it, necessarily, but it is useful to listen and talk.

Yes, the words will  be balance  and objectivity (at least to try) isnīt?. And thanks for clarifying this for me.

Thanks a lot Luther, i heard a couple of your songs and i really like your composition style (i enjoyed very much "Second Chance -piano-), and reading what you wrote on the thread about making music i agree with you about the benefits of more feedback and less praise, though i think  to show your work not always  is a about being praised, i consider sometimes itīs just to share with no expectations of any kind, but thatīs why the disscussion about being creative itīs so interesting.
61  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: About Making Music. on: January 12, 2010, 10:18:25 PM
At its best, music is a subconscious process.
I understand this. But I also want to offer my different position. For me, that isn't really true. It begins as true, or at least it begins as partly true. The early stages of composition tend to be a series of jabs, with intuition (subconscious) leading the way. But once the framework of a song--by which I mean basic melody and chord structure--is in place, it's far less a matter of the subconscious. Then it is a matter of working with theoretical understanding/craftsmanship. The decisions made there, however, are of course done with taste, and that could be considered a subconscious understanding.
Thatīs it i think, your explanation clarifies the creative process in my opinion: the intuition as the subconcious guide and then, as it develops tends to become more concious. It reminds me an article i read about Paul McCartney writing style:http://guitar.about.com/od/songwriting/ss/writing_melody_4.htm

From my limited experience, to write a song is a sort of chanelling process and it varies a lot: sometimes tunes come fast, sometimes takes a lot of time to even imagine a  melodic phrase or a satisfactory harmony. And i consider  very important certain elements as the mood i am in while trying to compose, the grade of obssesion(i find myself often blocked sometimes without even realize it or realize it till much more later), and how clear the main idea of the song is in my head. But this is i since i see it as a matter of frequencies. Of course this is just my approach to it.

Thanks Luther for bringing this interesting thread, it is very insightful to read the views of people involved in music creation.

My name on here is a play on Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. Dr UNH was an old nickname of mine here back in the golden days of Beach Boys online life, when the Brianistas lurked on the blueboard only.

Oh yeah!, Kubrickīs film with te famous rocket riding scene1. I saw it so much years ago, and i remember just that scene, and here in my country was subtitled with a completely different title.

Thank you guys for the welcome messages, and yes, I am Mexican Fan. And itīs a relieve to have the option to shorten Bobīs nickname (hello Bob!), unless he prefers otherwise.  Cheesy very funny nickname, sounds like the titleīs chapter from a Voltaireīs book, or the name of a  crazy Psychedelic band, lol.

Excellent variable2! what a cover, i totally agree with Chris Brown: "you really captured the Smile vibe". Encouraged by your efforts, i decided to share a cover i made a few months ago of Heroes & Villains, i honestly i must say that it is not so well recorded as yours, but it is a sincere atempt to tribute Brianīs Spirit.
It is not the complete song, just some of the sections, here it is:

LOL hilarious!, the Brian Wilson parody is funny as hell, like when he tries to make sing a goat but he asks the goat to sing his heart not his soul! and the acid trip with the beatles is brilliant too.
67  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Glad to find this forum! on: January 07, 2010, 02:19:52 AM
Hello forum folks!, i just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks to you for have been created this wonderful site. Iīm not an english native speaker, so i apologize if my expression is not clear enough.

Just a few minutes ago while doing a google searching about Domenic Priore i find this forum, and i have to say that this "accident" was a happy one, i am very glad and surprised, first of all for for the existence of a community specially dedicated to the legacy of one of the greatest icon in the history of popular music;and second,  i was  even more surprised for not having notice that this forum already exist, though i am a a truly admirer of Brian and the beach boys. So i decided to join if you donīt mind.

Iīll be glad to interact with you all and share points of view and fellings about the beautiful music  of the BB, so i hope to enjoy to be here, Thank you!!
