27  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / A song for my son... on: August 21, 2012, 01:12:48 AM
Hi, I wanted to share this Snippet of a song I wrote for my baby boy, the lyrics were taken from Gurdjieff's Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson,  I try to put it in a child song as a message to my Son.  Smiley

This is a demo, not the better sound unfortunately, it has some homemade tricks as overdubs an loops though etc.  Thanks for your attention. Here it is:

28  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Complex Pop Music on: April 22, 2012, 10:04:53 PM
Well,  The Beatles! obviously, they recorded some of the catchiest yet complex songs in terms of chord structures, melody and rythm. All you have to do is listen to Rubber Soul to Abbey Road Smiley

Also Iīm thinking of Queen as one of those few acts able to do complex but easy to listen songs (We are the champions have some odd chords in tha famous chorus, not to mention Bohemian Rhapsody or the whole Queen II)

Left Bank is another band who could do that...and Radiohead, recently i had the opportunity to see them and listen to them live, and itīs an awsome experience, they all are great musicians, and most of their material is heavily influenced by jazz (particularly Miles Davis). Their last albums contains interesting experiments with melody and odd rythmic patterns.
29  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Levitate me by "The Beach Boys" (Pixies Tribute) on: November 28, 2011, 09:09:54 PM
Hi, I used the search function to corroborate if this has been posted before, but I haven't found any thread that mention this curiousity. It is a  fake tribute of Pixies's song Levitate me , in the best Beach Boy Pet Sounds era.

I personally think that this is a brilliant reconstruction of a song, despite it is a parody you can hear a true pop craftmanship in it. The author  is a guy called just Matthew, and this song is part of a larger project called "Matthew's celebrity pixies covers" wich includes "versions" of diverse artists like Jimi Hendrix doing "Vamos", The Bee Gees making a rendition of "Wave Of Mutilation" or Queen with a mock re-invention of "Where is my mind". It's really cool but mainly funny stuff.  Anyway I consider Levitate me the best of this bunch by far. Hope you enjoy it:

P.S: Feel free to move this topic somewhere else if it has been discussed before. Thanks. Cheesy
30  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Psychedelic Classics on: November 26, 2011, 08:48:59 PM
Cool Topic! Smokin

I would like to recommend some of my favourite Psychedelic records:

1. The way they played by The Twilights.
2. Take a Picture by Margo Guryan.
3. She flies like a bird (anthology) by Honeybus.
4. Axis: Bold as Love by Jimi Hendrix.
5. Piper at the gates of dawn by Pink Floyd.
6. A gift from a flower to a garden by Donovan.
7. Os mutantes and A divina comedia by Os mutantes.
8. Would you believe by Billy Nichols.
9. Present tense by Saggitarius.
10. Evolution and Butterfly by The Hollies.

Of course everything recorded by The Beatles between 1965-1969 and everything that Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys did during the same period,
Also, I would like to mention a couple of psychedelic Pastiche- like records, though  none of them were recorded during the 60's: Dukes of Stratosphere by XTC and A dusk at the cubist castle by Olivia Tremor control, delightful  for those who enjoy psychedelic stuff, brilliant albums really. Smiley
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Here it is! Video footage of the BB recording Good Vibrations vocals!!!! on: October 29, 2011, 09:57:22 PM
Geez! I have never thought one day I would watch footage of the boys recording Good Vibrations and Brian working on the control room, it is beyond fantastic!!I wonder what other unseen treasures they have been keeping unveiled for so many years. Unbelievable Shocked Shocked Shocked
32  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: October 29, 2011, 09:45:41 PM
Sunflower is definitely my favorite Beach Boys album!!  It covers so many bases and yet totally plays as a cohesive unit.  It's awesome

Track by Track Review

1. Slip On Through - This is just a fantastic album opener.  It really kicks ass for sure!!  Dennis Rocks!  Fantastic harmonies on the chorus.  Love the ending when the bridge goes back into the chorus!  10/10
2. This Whole World - This song is just a mind blowing composition.  In less than 2 minutes Brian and the boys take us on a musical journey that's more varied and exciting than any 20 minute long-prog piece (though there are some really good ones of those too.)  10/10
3.  Add Some Music - goshdarn it this song should not be as good as it is.  The lyrics are kinda cheesy but damn do they work.  The mid section is so beautiful.  Love how everyone (but Dennis) sings a line. 10/10t's
4. Deirdre - I'm sometimes not a fan of Bruce (I feel like Disney Girls is a little overrated), but this is definitely my favorite of his compositions.  It's perfect sunshine pop!  10/10
5. Got to Know the Woman - Some people aren't that big of fans of this song but I think it's superb.  Great Vocal from Dennis.  I actually love the female backing singers on this. 10/10
6. It's About Time - Holy sh*t, a Beach Boys song that actually legitametly rocks in the studio.  Got to give props to Desper on this one. 10/10
7. Tears in the Morning - Definitely my least favorite one on here.  I think the entire thing is just a little bit schmaltzy, and I can't stand that candle line, however it's still a damn fine song.  I love the way the piano ending segues into the next track. 8/10
8. All I Wanna Do - This is possibly my favorite Beach Boys song.  The production is out of this world.  It gives me the chills every time. 11/10
9. Forever - A damn fine ballad from Dennis.  While it's not one of my top favorite Beach Boys songs it's still absolutely incredibly beautiful.  Brian's vocals at the end are awesome! 10/10
10. Our Sweet Love - A great ballad but it feels kind of like a retread of God Only Knows.  Love Brian's backing vocals on this.  9/10
11. At My Window - This is a strange one but I absolutely love it to death.  It starts out as this bizzare childish song that sounds like it could get annoying, and then all of a sudden it gets really creepy.  All of sudden you're then hit with one of the most gorgeous fades on a Beach Boys Song 9/10
12.  Cool Cool Water - Spectacular.  I personally like this more than Da Da (Maybe the box set will change my mind.)  10/10

All in all sunflower is an unbelievable album.  Though some of the songs (mainly Tears in the Morning) aren't perfect, I still wouldn't change a thing about it.  It's amazing how much joy this album brings me every time I listen to it.

10/10

Excellent summary! Smiley

I also love this album badly, I remember the first time I listen to it for the first time, it was a mind blowing and totally emotive moment. Some of my favourite Beach Boys songs are in this album. I specially love Slip on through, Our sweet love, All I wanna do and At my window wich  I consider an almost graphic experience with that incredible textures (Agree with you, that fade out is out of this world). I have always thought of Sunflower as Beach Boys's Abbey Road Smiley

Hi, just wanted to share with you all this little arrangement I'm working on these days, is basically a music hall based piece, I was  just having fun with harmonie, thiss is my attempt to arrange some vocals in the Brian Wilson's style. Feedback will be appreciated, thanks Smiley

Black Saint and the sinner lady and Epitaph by Charles Mingus and of course the essential A Kind of blue by Miles Davis and practically anything you can get from Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington.
Also I've been listening lately this wonderful singer and bassist Esperanza Spalding:

38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Act Of Creation by Arthur Koestler on: July 20, 2011, 08:27:37 PM
Also, speaking of the Peedles; Brian said he felt like he was in competition with The Peedles during that time. The Peedles were making songs like 'Tomorrow Never Knows' 'She Said She Said' 'Here There And Everywhere'  - it would only make sense he would seek out a spiritual avenue to help intellectualize his records.

It is interesting that possibly Brian was reading up on Zen, Astrology, etc only to beat the Peedles at their own game.

Excuse me, why you call them The Peedles?

Most impressive, LL. Can't wait to hear the finished product. Love the guitar in section one. The other pieces are very cool too. :=)

Thank you very much John, glad you liked it, i hope to get it done very soon.

Hi Guys, I wanted to show you this piece I'm working on, is the third section of the song actually. It's a poem in fact that a friend of mine wrote and she kindly allowed me to put some music on. Still on process, so this is a demo.  Smiley Thanks.

You pop em out like an assembly line...it sounds a bit like one guy overdubbing
everything as opposed to a band playing it in a room.
Glad you liked it. And it is like an assembly line, in a way. It isone guy overdubbing. But I am a believer in just churning out songs. The (warhol-inspired) Lou Reed idea of "just work" makes more sense to me than anything else. It doesn't matter. So, ... songs. Kazam!

Nice!, It sounds like a clever mix of powerpop and the early seventies Beach Boys,  the drums in the bridge has the Wilson trademark.  Smiley
43  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / A silly Pythonesque song on: May 26, 2011, 08:31:51 PM
Hi, I just wanted to share this song I wrote, it's just a humorous vignette inspired by Monty Python. I had a great time doing this silly thing wich is basically a cut and paste excercise along with some melody I enjoyed so much.

Thanks. Smiley

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but the one, the only Shaggs....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN9UT2zF8c8

The Shaggs fit so well in this topic, they were natural inhabitants of the weirdest musical worlds.

A personal choice of this kind of odd music would be Os Mutantes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSe2Dn960mo&feature=related

And another one that maybe is pretty obvious, Frank Zappa:

45  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Favorite Beatles psychedelic era-sounding groups? on: March 17, 2011, 12:52:01 AM
Don't forget Honeybus who wrote beatlesque gems as "Story" (very "Something") or "Fresher than the sweetness in water" among many other great tunes.

Also, the Australian band "The Twilights"(according with wiki they even met the Beatles  and were present at Abbey Road studios  during some sessions, Penny Lane i think) they wrote some very Beatle influence stuff, i personally would recommend two songs: "Time and motion study man" and "Paternosta Row" both highly psychedelic works, the later is sort of a LSD rendition of both Penny Lane and Being for the benefit of Mr, Kite (and the Walrus too!).

...I almost left out another great band that resembles Beatles's psychedelic era , The Pretty Things and their classic "S.F. Sorrow", even the voices sounds very Lennon. Smiley Smokin

Congratulations DSamore! itīs a great collection of very creative pieces. I like very much the combination of "conventional" rockpop-surf  songs  the more experimental material, the snipets. Very clever really, it is noticed the hard work and inspiration, good for you! and thanks for sharing with us Smiley
48  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: New song: \ on: July 29, 2010, 07:50:27 PM
Actually i used my laptop and mixpad software,  so i think that the weird sound is due to the cheap equipment i use  Undecided. You see, my tools are a semiprofessional shure microphone, a Squier Stratocaster Guitar and a Marshall amp that a friend kindly lent me. Of my property i use  an old yamaha PSR500 keyboard, my Yamaha bass guitar (wich is my main instrument by the way) and my laptop.

Though often i feel quite disatisfied for the quality of the sound, i must say that from a romantic perspective i like the homemade sound because as you say it sounds kind of vintage. Anyway, i would love to work on a professional studio, with "real" equipment and see what happen. I feel very flattered by your comments, thanks a lot for your interesting, i really appreciated Smiley.

49  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: New song: \ on: July 27, 2010, 10:45:49 AM
Wow! I can really hear a heavy Beatles/Beach Boys influence in the instrumentals. reminds me somewhat of 'Wonderful'

I am extremely impressed with 'Last Sorry Message' - !!!!!!!! That sounds way too good. I love the influences! You've got the Beatles/BeachBoys/Elvis/Do-Wop/Spector all mixed into one awesome song! Great stuff!!!

Thank you very much for your gentle words rab, i am very glad that you find that stuff interesting.

Yes, youīre right, the influences you mentioned are the roots of my attempts to write music.  Since i am really fond on that music (beatles, beach boys etc) i decided to get on with it and try to do something. unfortunately all of my demos are recorded in a very lo-fi way (i hope to record prperly soon), a poor quality in sound ,nevertheless it has been utterly instructive to write, record, but mainly to share it.

Finally, congratulations to all the forum members who recently published their brand new Lpīs or Epīs, itīs very exciting to hear sucha creative efforts Smiley
