51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Specifics on Brian's extraction from Landy on: October 13, 2015, 06:37:14 AM
I am not a Landy apologist by any means and still I feel he should be properly credited for the work he did on BW88, in the interest of historical accuracy if you will. He played a big role in Brian's life around the time and I find it wrong to pretend he had nothing to do with the creative process around the time. Also, much like Love You, BW88 is an album mostly appreciated by hardcore fans and among these everyone's familiar with the full story anyway, all the more since the recent biopic.

I agree with this. Even if the people are struck off financial benefits from royalties etc. The name of the actual writers should be accredited to songs they worked on in my opinion....

Perhaps if you start a petition drive, Landy's estate will give back the $$ they received in the settlement, so Landy and  gang can get their names back on the songs

Correct, 2016. All things being equal, the guests will be (drum roll, please)...

Alan Boyd and Mark Linett, and if the thought of listening to, and quizzing, those two doesn't float your boat, the door's over there.

So, if you're a UK/European fan, start saving and (when it's known) save the date, because this will be a special one. I'm there. But don't let that put you off.

Sounds to be a really good reason to make the trip across the pond.
By the by, did you and your best boy Mikie hook up for this year's Stomp? ( Back when, that was the plan)

The woman sitting next to Al is HOT!  Is she someone we should know?

Someone we'd like to know!!

One other thing that was new to me. After they did God Only Knows, synced with the audio/video of Carl singing lead, I was waiting for them to do Forever. Instead, they did Do You Wanna Dance, with a Dennis lead and some black and white video of him singing.
I also forgot to mention that some guy came onstage in the second half who Mike said was named Paul. I didn't catch his last name, but Paul sang the lead on Help Me Rhonda for some reason. After that, he hung around onstage for the remainder of the show, sometimes playing tambourine, sometimes taking over the keyboard duties, including playing a not-so-great organ solo on—I think—Surfin' USA. Earlier, Mike had mentioned that the producer of the Pisces Brothers track was in the audience. Does anyone know if that song was produced by someone named Paul? Otherwise, I have no idea who this guy was or why he got to sing lead on Rhonda.

I think Paul Fauerso produced some of Mike's 70s stuff and also worked with him on the 2000s "Mike Love Not War" stuff including "Pisces Brothers" (and got a production credit for his work on "Daybreak Over the Ocean" on the TWGMTR album, as they used his version and then just laid some BB vocals over it). Fauerso was also a vocalist/keyboardist in "Celebration." So I'd guess that was the Paul at the show.

I Googled his name and you are indeed correct; that's the fellow who sang Help Me Rhonda in San Antonio.

I just love when a mystery such as this is solved so quickly. Kudos!!
55  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy - News and Reviews - First clip is out. on: October 12, 2015, 07:25:30 PM

I assume the same deleted scenes from the US version will be on the UK version... right?
I would assume the same, can't see the point in having different deleted scenes for different regions. More work for very little benefit....
But if they wanted to make more $$, because they'd sell twice as many copies as fans would have to buy both versions
56  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thoughts on Ricci Martin's Beached? on: October 12, 2015, 07:20:14 PM
With Carl and Dennis singing these songs, it would be an amazing album!

Can you make that happen?
57  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Specifics on Brian's extraction from Landy on: October 11, 2015, 02:28:55 PM
Worth mentioning that Kevin S. Leslie, to use the name he goes by professionally, has a LinkedIn profile - which, per the rules of this board, I am not linking to.

What rule is that?

No other real good place to note this, so, for anyone that keeps a record of cover versions of Brian/BBs songs, an unreleased ( and probably always will be) cover:

With this one move Murry wiped away his claim to everything good he had ever done for Brian/ the BBs.
There's absolutely no reason to give him praise for past moves and he showed himself to be a despicable louse

We also have confirmation that he's working on the late 70s "Alone on Christmas Day" (and that Ron Altbach co-wrote it), and that it will be in the Bill Murray special. I'm a bit confused, as he describes a band called "Phoenix" having recently found the song on the internet and covering it. I'm assuming Mike brings that up because that may have been the impetus for him to remember the song and then go find out who co-wrote it with him.

I didn't read it as confirmation of Mike's version in the movie. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.  As also mentioned by Guitarfool, Phoenix is listed in the movie credits, so it's just as easy to picture their version being used
62  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson / Al Jardine / Blondie Chaplin Fall 2015 Tour Thread on: October 09, 2015, 11:20:03 AM
I have tickets to the show in Allegany on Saturday - I bought them the day they went on sale.  I've had a hard few months and I can't describe how much I was looking forward to that show.  It would have been a seven hour drive for us but that was the closest show so we were going to do it.  I can't go now because of a family illness.  Trip is cancelled.

I know that in the grand scheme of things a concert isn't that "important" but I am totally crushed by this.  I can't even listen to the BB today without crying.  And normal people just don't get it, do they.

But, I hope everyone who's going has a great time.  I'll be reading the reports with a big box of Kleenex next to me.

Hang in there. I’ve had moments like that. I think a lot of us understand precisely the type of suck this sort of thing is. It’s not life-threatening, but it’s beyond simply a little bummer. I’ve had experiences like that; the most joyous thing turning into the biggest bummer.

I know it won’t help, but I for one always feel that having the recordings, the music, at home to listen to any time, having that is always immensely more important than a concert.

Thanks, it was really nice to read that.  Yes, it is way beyond simply a little bummer.

I know what you mean about having the music to listen to and I get it, but I've always thought the concert is THE thing, unvarnished, immediate and real.  And the sound of it when you're there in person, oh man, THE SOUND!  Nothing compares.  I was lucky enough to see them in July in a small concert hall, and I just couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I, too, know how that goes.  Back in '08 I had planned to see Brian and band in Chicago, a 3 1/2 hour drive for me.  I had figured out where I was going to park, what train I was going to take downtown, everything.  Then, an acquaintance, who used to post here occasionally and who was friends with some of the band members, managed to get me a backstage pass for an after-show meet n' greet.  I was on cloud nine.  The day before the show, my employer mandated that I work that day, and they told that I would be terminated if I didn't show up.  Well, I was crushed.  I managed to sell my ticket, but at a loss.  I still have the backstage pass, though, unused.

Personally, if at all possible I'd  have found ways to negatively impact my employer at every chance, if it could be done without impacting my own position
63  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike interview Part 2 of 2 on: October 08, 2015, 08:11:01 PM
Not bad.  I liked part 1 better but this one was fairly well done compared to many Mike Love interviews I've read previously.  My main quibble was with his meandering off topic when discussing the talents and merits/contributions of his band mates.  Somehow it would revert and become way more about Mike and a LOT less about the individual he was supposedly talking about.  The rest of it, by and large, was relatively decent stuff I guess.  There were a few exceptions mind you.

One  throwaway answer which didn't strike me as accurate.  Btian wasn't 'there' because he was taking LSD.  After Friends?  Really?  So no mention of his illness?  And the Brian's Back 'thing'?  Like that was a smart thing to do?  No.  Why?  'Cause Brian wasn't "back".

He sure did a shitty job of promoting his book too.  Don't get too preachy regarding environmental issues.  BUT.  Sounds like the book is gonna be full of 'wisdom'.  3D  I don't know. Huh

 LOL Self taught? LOL

Mike said that Brian wasn't around much post-Friends because of the effects of Brian's acid intake during the Smile era.

All in all, it's just good to know that the impetus for ALL the hits was Mike.  Everything was Mike. Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike

Maybe it's just me as a Beatles fan seeing this, but why does it seem the Beach Boys are always trying to make-up 60's friendships with the Beatles that never really happened to the degree they describe? Mike & George Harrison lately...now Al & John Lennon and this might sound a bit harsh, but Brian really seems to push the Paul McCartney thing way more than Paul does whenever the two end up in the same place...and jamming with the boys on the 4th of July meant so much to Ringo that he got drunk and has said multiple times he has no recollection whatsoever of the entire day......

The Mike thing, yeah. Al? Seems to me, he's doing a tribute performance because he treasures the memory of John and CAN do something that some people will appreciate( obviously not you )I don't see any quotes in the article where AL is claiming the freindship. Relix printed something based on events they think happened.  Of course it's completely unheard of for a magazine to get their facts wrong...
65  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike interview Part 1 of 2 on: October 08, 2015, 05:43:08 PM
One error-the meeting between Mike and Carl and the Beatles was August 1965 not 1964.  Aug 22 1964 the BBs were playing in Pittsburgh!

You know, based on Mike's answer, I'd venture they said, and Mike heard, 1965, but mistyped 1964 when they went to publish. Kind of ties in with their typing Carl's name as Carol and Carla in two other spots...

I was expecting posters to jump all over Jardine about the inaccuracies in the article. But no; such a thing happens with ML-article/interview threads.

BTW, this very thread turned into an anti-Mike fest about a quote that is not unsupported by first-hand accounts (i.e. first-hand accounts let us know Brian nixed Al's song). But it's easier to blame Love, just as it was easy for O'Hagan to blame the failure of his purported association with the Boys on Mike rather than on Brian's lack of interest.

So if something is not unsupported, then that means it is supported. Correct?

For the rest , all I hear is blah blah blah

Mike's interview Part 2 is available: http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2015/10/08/mike-love-of-the-beach-boys-one-on-one-interview-part-2

IF only everything he says didn't have to be related in terms of crediting himself.
Oh well, still lots of compliments  for others.

Wondering now if " Alone On christmas Day" in the new Bill Murray movie will be performed by The Beach Boys/The Mike Love Band, or Phoenix

My favorite Larry Dvoskin quote is, regarding the non-appearance of "Waves of Love" on TWGMTR:

“Mike 1000% c*ck blocked Al Jardine & Bruce from having any of their songs on the record out of self interest.”

Yes, I'm well aware that Fine's Rolling Stone article mentions that Brian wasn't into it either, but Dvoskin’s take is interesting and thought-provoking if nothing else.

Wow. I'm not a Mike-hater by any stretch, but (if accurate) what a dick move. "Don't Fight the Sea", "Waves of Love" and potentially the re-make of "She Believes in Love Again" (never heard it) in place of some of the weaker ML numbers would have strengthened the record and given it a more representative group sound, including two Carl vocals.

Mike wouldn't have done any c*ck blocking if he'd just been allowed to sit alone in a room with Brian and write some new versions of his old songs

With any luck, they're likely to have the project finished in time for the 50th Anniversary of Lennon's passing

This was starting to be knocked around in the New Album thread but I thought was better-off sidelined into its own topic. So here goes:

I have no inside knowledge, but I have a gut feeling the new album will be called 'Celebration', for good or ill. It seems to be an appropriate Beach Boys brand name for the whole 50th anniversary tour/ album package. At least the title doesn't have 'Summer' in it.

I also hope they manage to find and include at least one quality 'new' Carl lead vocal (not Soul Searchin, already released), as it seems wierd to me to have the Beach Boys without Carl (and Dennis for that matter) represented. But then, Summer in Paradise had no Brian input at all, so I guess for me, you can have the Beach Boys as long as you have at least one Wilson brother involved. Otherwise, it's a 'BB related' project.  Smiley

Bassist Brett Simons' personal website lists the title as being "Celebration."

Celebration was also the name of Mike's almost-fogotten band way back when, which did a few tracks for the Almost Summer soundtrack.

And a rather enjoyable follow up album simply named 'Celebration' , always liked 'Starbaby' and the Cover of 'Gettin' Hungry'

(Think I've sorted those quotes out now…!)

I have that Celebration album, Rob, but I also have a very vague recollection of seeing a live Celebration LP back in the day – probably around 1980, give or take a year or two. It might have been a bootleg, of course, but I've never come across a reference to it since, and sorely regret not buying it at the time. If I recall correctly, other BBs were credited as appearing.

Maybe this is getting too far off topic and would be better off in a Celebration thread I'm thinking… ah, it is!

The cover to one of the albums has a lot of live photo shots of the UCLA show right?  Maybe that's what you registered as being a live album?  I know when I saw it that's the impression I first got.

Possible I gues but it's a long fine ago. I think I already had both the soundtrack LP and the Celebration  album at the time I think I saw the bootleg - but we're lokely taking three decades ago!

Look now. That has to be it, and here's the one you probably saw; still has  29 cents written on the cover

Aye but… pretty sure, as mentioned, that I already had this LP at the time I saw my suspect live LP/boot. Only thing contradicting me/making me doubt my own sanity is the fact that it doesn't look like there's ever been a Celebrafion live LP/boot!!!

Like, who would bother?
