No solo material? I can't imagine a solo Carl compilation without Heaven or I Wish For You. Same with Dennis without River Song or Farewell My Friend.

that's why he's the lostbeachboy

Anyone shed light on this? Another out of copyright grey area issue?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B014YP1I0M

That may be what they're going for, some sort of public domain situation.

But the original album artwork, and certainly Capitol's logo, are things that a "PD" publisher certainly cannot use as far as I know.

Yup, agreed - I cannot make out what part of the red panel, bottom left says - "this is a HD XXXX CD …" etc. surely this kind of thing - likely a needle drop - wouldn't be an HD CD?
It's copyright in the EU Universal Music 2015....

Am I missing something?  The guy's just wearing a plaid shirt

Pendleton plaid, the Beach Boys wore them in the early days. You can buy them today and some retailers actually call them The Beach Boys Pendleton.

The retailers don't have to go far to get the phrase, as the manufacturer calls them that in their own history:

>>Pendleton Shirts and Surf Culture
In the early 1960s, Pendleton shirts hit the airwaves courtesy of The Majorettes, ) whose song, "White Levis" became a number one hit in 1963.

As the lyrics said, "My boyfriend's always wearin' white Levi's... and his tennis shoes and his surfin' hat and a big plaid Pendleton shirt." Levi's and Pendleton have always paired up well, but wouldn't connect for a labeled collaboration for another 47 years.

Soon after, a group called The Pendletones began to sing about the California surfing scene. They changed their name to the Beach Boys, but kept their uniform of Pendleton shirts worn over tee shirts with khakis. The band wore their blue and charcoal plaid shirts on the covers of 45s and LPs throughout the 1960s.

In 2002, Pendleton brought back the Board Shirt in the same plaid, re-named The Blue Beach Boys Plaid. Because of its strong ties to surfing history and culture, this pattern was used in collaborations with Hurley and VANS in the late 2000s. The shirt is still going strong. <<

For the life of me I don't get why fans create these "what if" situations. Then again ,I don't understand fantasy football either.

Fantasy football is otherwise known as Soccer, right?

So Mike is saying he and Brian both have "sides" which make decisions without them.
I'm not sure what his intent is, but if we parse it literally it means:
1. they both have 'sides'
2. Brian's 'side' did "not allow" them to work together
3. Mike doesn't think that the lack of allowance had "anything to do with Brian himself"

So, his words communicate that they each have a 'side' but that Brian's side makes rules for Brian's behavior independent of input from Brian. He does not comment on how his side operates.

Again, that's what his words say, regardless of his intent.

"... but it was not allowed — by his side, not my side. So I don’t think it has anything to do with Brian himself"

It seems it implies both "sides" had the power to not allow it without having anything to do with either of them.
Again, I'm making no assertion regarding his intent, and perhaps that was his intent. But a literal parsing does not state that. A literal parsing only states that they each had a side and that Brian's side didn't allow something. He literally said nothing about the behavior of his side. Whether he intended to imply such a thing is subjective.

OK, we'll leave it there, agreeably disagreeing.

I think this is the most agreeable you've been in a long time. You're really getting mellow

I remember most clearly listening in the dark (with held breath) to the very first UK broadcast of  "Good Vibrations" in late 1966, presumably October. I must have noted it in my diary that day. Unfortunately in a rash move I destroyed everything from those years, drawings, compositions----and diaries.

Does anyone out there know the exact day this happened? Or at least point me in some useful direction? (I couldn't find anything about it at AGD's Bellagio site.) Much appreciated.

HOW in the world would any of us know the exact day you destroyed all your stuff??

This doesn't sound like 1981 to me.  It sounds later, as in mid to late 80s, after he lost some weight.

That was my problem too! I thought for sure that was from the late 80s.

I never heard of walking on water by the beach boys. is there any way I can listen to that demo??? Thanks

here's a version of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_pZkBg0zPc

Got this promo via email today. I went to look at the photos. There are some real gems in the collection, some you've even seen in print before. All you need is a whole lot of money.

The collection is presented in a little over 400 individual lots, almost all of which will be offered with a full transfer of rights, which makes this material not only collectible but also commercially appealing and exceptionally valuable.

Among the many artists featured in this collection we have some very interesting Beach Boys material that we believe you ... might be interested to see and know about. Here is a direct link to the featured lots:

http://www.backstageauctions.com/catalog/beach-boys/ac/0/975/

The auction preview is currently live. The auction itself will start this coming weekend and will end on Sunday, October 4, 2015.

Perhaps....   Someone here will play and win the lotto prior to the end of the auction and desire the rights to ALL the photos?

Huh!  yeah, guess what? My collection isn't as organized as it should/could be. So I found a few more.
Maybe if I hadn't  started by including Front/Back/CD more people would contribute?  Oh well.... Is that Eric Burdon I hear crying?

141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Through The Mail Autographs on: September 23, 2015, 12:31:55 PM
Star Tiger is a good website for this. They have address and let you know who sends real autos or fake (preprint, autopen) ones.

Never had success with musicians (I sent a 45 to Van which promptly got lost in the mail. Thanks USPS) but have had success with others including Barbara Eden and a few voice actors (like Katheryn Beaumont who voiced Alice in the old Disney animated version) for example.

when you send things in the mail, do you send them registered mail?

Well, this wasn't directed towards me, but Wrightfan hasn't responded, so...

I usually don't mess with certifying/tracking/insuring anything I sent through the mail. Reason being, I wouldn't send anything too valuable because there is a risk it never comes back. There are a few sites that provide celebrity addresses and give you a pretty good idea of success rates. This takes some of the risk out of it as you have a pretty good idea ahead of time if your intended recipient is good at responding.

The basics:

Item to be signed (i.e. photo, ticket stub, cd/dvd cover, etc.)
Nice, short letter with your request
Self addressed stamped (not metered!) envelope with enough postage to cover the return trip
This all goes inside a larger envelope addressed to the intended recipient

You win some, you lose some. The signed photo of Mike, Bruce and Al cost me $10-$15 in supplies, postage, etc. I also feel better about the authenticity of the signatures compared to some of the stuff you see on eBay. I've been collecting autographs this way for 25 years (on and off) and would be happy to answer any additional questions.

thinking if someone is sending a 45, registering/insuring might be a good plan; especially if the person on the other end isn't expecting it.

Courtesy of the PSML, here's a new review for  the M&B band, along with a Brian concert comparison/review:

http://lasvegassun.com/vegasdeluxe/2015/sep/21/the-beach-boys-showcase-their-many-many-many-hits/

On PSML, the reviewer added these comments:

>>Hey there. I'm a longtime list member who finally saw Mike and Bruce on Saturday at a casino here in Las Vegas.
I wrote a review for my employer and thought I'd share; I tried to be diplomatic.

I say that because I'd seen Brian three times -- once each in his 50s, 60s and 70s -- and was surprised that the most recent show,
also in Las Vegas, was the best of the three.
He seemed far more relaxed than during the Pet Sounds and Smile shows, and Al's presence really added something.
So I couldn't help but favorably compare that July show to the one I saw a few days ago, and Mike and Bruce clearly embrace nostalgia a lot more than
Brian's band does. Even the performance of "Pisces Brothers," the one "new" song in M&B's setlist, features images of Mike and George Harrison in India in 1968.
The song kind of creates the false narrative that Mike and George once were besties.

The crowds at the Brian and M&B shows were quite different, with the latter skewing older.
That might just be a function of the show being at a casino, rather than a theater.
As I mention in my review, Bruce's vocals are really faint these days;
he only handled lead vocals for a couple of songs but apparently carries more
of the vocal workload in other shows.

Speaking of Bruce, I interviewed him before the show.
He mostly said things you'd expect; he praised Mike and said he deserves as much credit for the band's success as Brian, and that Mike had
taught him tons about the music business. I semi-jokingly asked how he and Mike can stand each other after 50 years, and he seemed taken aback by the question.
He also said Mike has come up with every setlist since the 1960s, but I'm guessing that might not be true for the reunion show or the unplugged concerts back
in 1993 or so. He was pretty open about continuing to tour because it's making him money, which is fine.
He sounded vigorous and spirited when we chatted, which is why I was surprised his voice wasn't stronger in concert.
Oh, and I asked if/when "Mike Love, Not War" might come out. He said he wasn't sure why Mike hadn't released it yet.

Brian looks very relaxed! Pictures 2 and 3 are different.  Also Van Dyke Parks is there too!

Yes, I have a whole series of these photos.  The close-up of Brian is a separate shot.

If you're talking about the guy in the blue shirt with the beard, that's not Van Dyke.

Is that Melinda Ledbetter (with face obscured) sitting next to Brian?

Yes, Brian and Melinda arrived backstage together in a Limo.  They were not yet married.  To answer another poster above, Audree was also present that day.

I know it's a lot of effort to read the whole thread sometimes, but to answer the question yet again, yes, Audree was at the 8-94 show in Torrance CA with Brian and Melinda. I saw them all with my own eyes. Even snapped a picture of myself with Brian. I talked briefly with Carl about his whole family being there that day. Yes, she was there.

can you post the picture of you and Brian?

Considering how much religion has caused suffering in this world, a song called God Only Knows should be banned. Also, the song features a prominent French horn part, and back in the days French horn was used to signal hunters - by choosing to use that particular instrument, the song's arranger promotes cruelty towards animals. Disgusting song.

Given that England has traditionally been at war with the French for centuries (we want their sound samples, they want all our CDs) the use of this instrument is inflammatory, taunting and provocative. I just stabbed myself in my left eye wih a fork in disgust…

No wonder! You need more than 3 hours sleep if yu're going to delve this deeply

I assume that this is for A Very Murray Christmas which is coming out on Netflix?

Sounds like it. A RS link from May has no mention of Mike or the Beach Boys but that could have changed.

http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/videos/bill-murray-sofia-coppola-team-up-for-a-very-murray-christmas-20150522

There were quite a few sources for the same info, all dated may 22. I don't think anything else has made the news since, until Mike's announcement.
And just as with the RS piece, none of the sites I found mentioned anything about music( other than artists listed as starring with Bill. I noticed only Miley,)

How often have BRI/The Beach Boys pulled one single, totally unreleased, ancient, archival track from the vaults, and simply released it on its own as a single and/or offered it up for a movie? They probably *should* be shopping around to do that to help the band’s brand (though probably not with “Alone on Christmas Day”), but they haven’t been doing much of that in this type of scenario.

And again, Mike has already mentioned that they were *in the studio* working on the song recently. Unless Mike has been talking about two separate Christmas-themed tracks, it’s pretty likely I’d say this track is a Mike solo deal, as it has been with “Pisces Brothers” and “Santa’s Goin’ to Kokomo”, etc.

And you're probably dead on here; sounds to be a Mike solo/ non-BBs track.
But I think it's possible Murray/ the movie's producers wanted a BBs tack for their release and someone may have offered them this one?
As no-one seems to know any details at this point, it's anyone's guess.

… and there's a curious thing - if Murray/Murray's handlers did indeed want a BBs' track for the movie, would they accept a Mike Love solo track in its stead, given the proven lack of commercial viability of Mike's solo material and the fact that half the folks purporting to be Beach Boys fans actively dislike him and deride anything he's ever done?

When the truth does come out, it'll no doubt piss on more picnics…

unless, somehow, Bill Murray knows/likes/ is friends with Mike
By the way, can I see your copy of the report showing half of all BBs fans actively dislike Mike?

LOL

It's somewhere in my thesis, looking into the fact that 75% of cited statistics are made up

OK. just thought I'd check. Reports I've seen show most of those fans aren't active

I don't see the obsession to continually start negative threads, about ANY/ALL BBs
