Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Track Talk #2: Country Air

People link this tune with Let The Wind Blow… in my mind it also fits well with Wake the World. I guess it's the 'rise and shine' theme, which also occurs in Barnyard. They're all good fresh air songs.
For me it feels Similar to Love to Say Dada and Little Pad. I can't put my finger on it but I wouldn't be surprised if it was originally composed alongside dada i.e. during the latter stages of smile/as it transitioned into smiley. AGD does favour the Air element theory from what I can remember of his posts on the subject. Country Air is one of my favourite bb songs. So effortlessly breezy and beautiful. Impossible to grow tired of. Have any Country Air sessions ever been released or found?

I absolutely love both albums and with Smiley Smile it has such a unique sound I almost wish they would have remixed GV and H&V for the album to really make it fit with the theme of the album. Sacrilegious I know...but since GV and H&V were already released as singles I think it would have been awesome to have alternate versions on the album like the H&V live London version. Any thoughts?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / SMiLE and Wikipedia?
|
on: November 16, 2011, 08:42:58 PM

I was checking out how Smile was described on Wikipedia and I noticed at the bottom in the Track Listing section it quotes Brian as saying this -Brian Wilson has stated that the exact running order was not decided upon until 2004, and that the original Smile would have been less "uplifting". I have never heard this quote from Brian, is this true? And if so what songs would have been removed or what versions of certain tracks could have been used to make it sound less uplifting?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Are you guys feelin' the acid yet?

Listening to Our Pray "Dialog" on TSS and when Brian asks the infamous acid question someone then very quietly replies "I feel great" is that Carl's voice or Brian?
And the funny thing to me is a second later I am assuming its Mike saying "Lets Go" which to me he sounds irritated. Is that Carl and Mike's voice I am hearing?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Disc 3 Hidden Tracks - WOAAAAH!!!
|

Disc 3 has not one but THREE hidden tracks. And boy, is it good stuff! First, isolated carrot-chomping sounds from Vega-Tables - fun to have. No trace of Paul McCartney here, by the way, unless he'd taken a vow of silence that evening...!
Second - the isolated workshop power tools/sawing overdub. Again, great to hear and handy for 'rolling your own' mixes.
But the third one was not listed anywhere as far as I knew, and was therefore the most hidden of ALL the hidden tracks (well, so far, anyway). Look away now if ye fear spoilers...
It's the isolated Baldwin overdub for the chorus of Heroes And Villains, as used on the Smiley Smile/45 version of the song. WOW! I thought this was irrevocably mixed into the Smiley track, and not present on a multitrack tape on its own track! But clearly, from its inclusion here in isolation, this is not the case. Makes me wonder, too... that suggests a true stereo mix of the Smiley version, including the organ overdub, WOULD actually be possible after all (for years, I've assumed that was completely out). That means the only multitrack part missing for a true stereo Smiley-style mix is the 'Stand or fall I know there shall be peace in the valley' vocals. And Alan and Mark have already got around that problem once, back on the 'Hawthorne, California' mix...
Of all of the extras afforded by the hidden tracks, this is the greatest little bonus to have in my opinion. I feel like Mark L and Alan B have really gone out of their way to give us all of these little parts. Not only are they fascinating to hear, they'll make the whole 'rolling your own' thing a lot easier.

How long is the Baldwin overdub hidden track on Disc 3?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Good Vibrations / Here Today
|
on: October 27, 2011, 06:12:14 PM

I have been trying to distract myself from the sampling the sessions by going over the LLVS book and I found an article by Brad Elliot called "The Facts About Smile" and down where he talks about a sessions worksheet of Good Vibrations from the Pet Sounds session. He says "The song carries a master number 55680 the same number as Here Today, does that mean the track for Here Today is the original Brian track for Good Vibrations?" So my question, is it strange at all that they have the same master number or is it a common thing to happen? Sorry if its a dumb question,I am just trying to stop looking at the clock.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Wonderful insert
|

So in trying to pass the time until SMiLE arrives I have been going through the ol' LLVS book and on page 147 DP says about Wonderful "Missing from the October version is the Hey-bob-a-rebop bridge heard after the third verse in the Smiley Smile version. However, session worksheets indicate Brian produced an insert for the original version of the song on January 9th" Is he referring to "Rock With Me Henry" or something else?

I received a message a few years ago saying that Bruce has the "Musical Comedy" version, which is about, 10 Minutes, I've heard it a few times, and I recently got an MP3 of it, the vocals on "i've been in this town" are my favorite...
FatherOfTheMan is there anyway I can get a PM of this? I would love to hear it.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Indian Wisdom / Friends
|

I get what you're saying. I was just trying to say that Indian Wisdom is a more familiar title to hardcore fans. When you say "Indian Wisdom" or "Untitled Guitar Instrumental", most people here would know exactly what song you're talking about. But a generic title like "New Song" could be anything, unless you're a fanatic who does more research than most people would.
That is why there is such a thing as research. It has been proven, not by Andrew, but rather Alan Boyd (you know, the dude who actually really knows a thing or two about their music which is much more than I can say for most people here), that the track in the vaults on a 3/26/68 reel labeled "New Song" is the so-called "Indian Wisdom" or "Spanish Guitar Instrumental". I'll take what's written on the tape box unless the band has a better idea. By your same (flawed) logic, we should all just call Love You the Farting Moog Album. Or Barbara Ann "Bomb Iran". I didn't mean to start all of this with my question. I knew Indian Wisdom or Dove whatever was the wrong title for the song but I knew that most people would know what track I was talking about it if I called it by that name instead of "New Song" which is the right title. I was only asking that if "New Song" was at one point really considered for the Friends album and where did you guys feel that it fit the best on the album. I guess I should have called it "New Song" from the beginning and if i offended anyone with calling it "Indian Wisdom" then I am sorry I just wanted to know where the track would have fit on the album if it would have made the final cut.

Since Indian Wisdom is from a "Friends" session does anyone think there was ever a real intent to put it on the album? The only place I can find where it somewhat could fit would be after Diamond Head. Any thoughts?
"Indian Wisdom" isn't a Friends track. "Indian Wisdom" isn't anything - never was. The track that bootleggers called "IW" (and also "Doves Of Peace") is listed on the tape box as "New Song". "IW" was the byline of a quote on a Hallmark product that was used on the back sleeve of Smiley Smile. Thus: Thanks Andrew for clearing that up, I never understood why it was called "Indian Wisdom"

yes, i'm sure it will turn up somewhere on the box... possibly as part of My Only Sunshine.
still, i think the "tape explosion" and the fade were essential parts of H&V, at least at one time.
I always thought the "tape explosion" was the best spot to put in "I'm In Great Shape" and "Barnyard." I put it on one of my mixes and it seems to fit pretty well. And as for "Barnshine" I like it after "Old Master Painter" I hope there is a better version with Mike singing the "You make happy when skies are grey" parts on that early version. I have only heard it on one booted session track and it has a lot of static.
