Crazy thought of the day: Brian finished The Elements and it's called Diamond Head (yeah, I know that it's not written by Brian alone).

For what it's worth, Darian believed the "second movement" was what Brian always had in mind, based on his reaction to Darian playing those pieces together.

Does anyone remember an interview in 2004 (an audio interview) where Darian describes Brian being curled on a sofa in a depressive "we can't do it" mood and then, on hearing Look, leaping up and shouting "That goes after Wonderful!"?

Yeah...  I'm thinking... not.  Grin

No I mean same as the 50s Beach Boys I'd heard tell of.  It's been approximately 350,000 years since I last heard or read anyone discussing the 50s Beach Boys but my memory is that their single or singles came out c.1958 (with Hawaiian song titles like the above 78).  A bit of reading on the Jerry Byrd 78 indicates it's from 1953, so are there 3 sets of Beach Boys?
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Original Beach Boys 60's 78 rpm records on: June 18, 2014, 08:34:43 PM
I searched a database of 78s and the only 60s one they listed was an Indian pressing of Little Honda

http://www.45worlds.com/78rpm/record/cle5

and this oddity turned up, Jerry Byrd and his Beach Boys

http://www.45worlds.com/78rpm/record/6058

I had heard of a 50s group called The Beach Boys, I don't know if this is the same.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE: Bring It On, Fanmixers. on: April 04, 2014, 11:39:44 AM
When I got my first Smile boot I hadn't read anything about the album other than the sleevenotes of the SS/WH twofer so I took the back cover at face value, dismissing the "see label" note as a bit of old-timey frippery like "File under: popular" or "consult you hi-fi dealer".  By the time I was aware that everybody else didn't have it that way, I'd gotten used to it.  I did eventually change things up, but my fanmix still bears traces of the back cover order.  I still like DYLW at the beginning because it's a slow build and anytime I've put it anywhere it just seems to dissipate the momentum.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_C._Page#Founding_of_Mission_Pak

A dried-fruit company with a jingle apparently famous enough for Brian to expect the others to know what he meant.

"Say the Magic words, say Mission Pak and it's on its merry way! No gift so bright, so gay, so right, give the Mission Pak magic way!"
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Boots - How did they evolve, and how many are there? on: February 20, 2014, 03:14:33 PM
The real highlight of that night was Van Dyke Parks playing tambourine on Do It Again (I'm not kidding).
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things \ on: February 13, 2014, 05:28:58 PM
My recollection is, someone (I think it might have been for the Earcandy site) interviewed Brian before one of the 2004 shows, asked about the OMP lyrics, Brian said that OMP was not meant to have vocals and then, with typical Brian perversity, sang the lyrics that night and every other night for the rest of the tour (I heard him do it in LA).
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: this song want's to sleep with you - BW Cd single on: November 06, 2013, 09:36:30 PM
My memory could be cheating, but I recall an interview with Don Was before the documentary came out, indicating that "This Song..." was supposed to end the film.  The idea being that up to that point the whole film was in black and white and then Brian would perform the song in colour, with a  "this is Brian Wilson today" feel.  I was surprised when the documentary came out and there was no sign of that ending.  Anyone else remember this?
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hidden mixes on MIC on: September 18, 2013, 05:52:39 PM
Isn't the 2001 stereo Wouldn't It Be Nice a bit different?  All previous version I heard had phasing where Mike's bridge vocal came in, but it's not on the box set.  I don't know if it's just my disc, but there is a big click before Brian's "we could be happy".
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: In light of MIC...Your updated custom album tracklists on: August 25, 2013, 04:01:34 PM
I haven't rejigged the albums as such, but on my megaplaylist (299 songs) I've got the long version of Meant For You after Transcendental Meditation as a reprise and I Believe In Miracles before the Smiley Vegetables as a kind of Bizarro Our Prayer (H&V is in the Smile section of the playlist).

I used to think the lyrics to Keepin' The Summer Alive ended with a terrifying example of OCD.

"Grab your girl hit the road head on down to the beach/You'll be countin' all the sand in your shoes"
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Still listen to the SMiLE bootlegs? on: July 16, 2013, 03:04:52 PM
For instance, there's a mix of Bicycle Rider with a vocal overdub at the end that I swear goes "Having returned to", like those fabled DYLW lyric "Having returned to the East or West Indies".

I've always heard that as "what have you done to...", I'll have to give it a close relisten.  It's one boot track I love to revisit because I think the tape hiss and acetate crackle adds a great spooky ambiance that works just for that one little bit.

A radio version of Up Against It was made in 1997 (Damon Albarn was in it).  I don't know about the radio version, but I've heard that Orton's script had no part for Paul.

Brian's changed his tune re God in recent years.

The Guardian Q&A: Do you believe in God?

Brian: No.

Fair play. And some people still have the nerve to say he's crazy...?

The same questionnaire format interview where he said his favourite book was The Bible and he had sex "twice a day, everyday".
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VDP: on: May 14, 2013, 06:58:18 PM
On a related point, who wrote the lyrics to Wind Chimes, Brian or Van Dyke? The credit originally was to Brian only and I don't think it was changed until BWPS cam out, and it was Wilson/Parks. It was also that way on the box set.

When I saw Brian's solo credit and the fact that the words didn't sound like any of Van Dyke's other lyrics on the project, I always figured Brian wrote them.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but it was in the 90s so it was probably in Beach Boys Australia or Beach Boys Stomp, but someone says something about confirming that Van Dyke "helped" with the lyrics of Wind Chimes, my inference being that the lyrics we have are VDP's rewrite of Brian's lyrics.  I'm sorry, I know that leaves a ton of [citation needed] and isn't within a hundred miles of conclusive, but I thought it was worth a mention.  If anyone can nail the source that'd be great.

How does a copyright "lapse" and become non-renewable after 50 years?

It's only mechanical copyright and I think it's only in the EU.  All the songwriters should still be collecting royalties on these as they would with any recording of their songs. What has lapsed is Capitol's claim on the actual recordings themselves.  Even then, I think subsequent remasters done by Capitol are in copyright as they could claim any cleaning up and noise reduction as being new work which remains in copyright for the moment.

I don't know the exact story  - I thought when that Heroes fade first circulated it was wrongly identified as barnyard, then the real Barnyard leaked and, hey presto, False Barnyard got its name. Anybody have better info on this?
I don't have my copy to hand, but I believe that the first appearance of the Heroes fade, mislabeled as Barnyard, minus the rest of Heroes and (I think) in stereo, was on the first Smile boot in 1983.  The Japanese 1989(?) CD boot also had the fade listed as Barnyard as well as the actual Barnyard (also listed as Barnyard) .

Nope...but they was two foxes in their day. Since there are a couple of Sparks fans around here, worth mentioning that when he was married to Mary H, Tony got her to record "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth." Ron Mael has mentioned this in an interview or too. It has never been officially released or surfaced otherwise.

It's on the 2007 album Valentine.  If Spotify's got it right, it's just titled "Mother Earth" which does obfuscate it a bit.

I wish I could remember where it came out and when but I know it was the early 70's. It was a typical hits compilation but to the best of my recollection, one side was:
1.Heroes & Villains (single)
2. Wonderful (Smiley Smile)
3. Our Prayer (20/20)
4. Cabinessence (20/20)
5. Surf's Up (Surf's Up)

Anyone know what this is?

Sound like the Capitol Years box set.  Wikipedia refers to a CD edition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Capitol_Years_%28The_Beach_Boys_album%29 but I have a vinyl copy and looking online, it appears to be from 1980 (I can't check it properly as my copy is on the other side of the world).   The first side of disc 5 runs thusly:

1. Good Vibrations
2. Wind Chimes
3. Cabinessence
4. Vegetables
5. Wonderful
6. Our Prayer
7. Heroes And Villains

All the standard album versions (though I believe Cabinessence is collapsed to mono).  I'm sure the booklet explicitly states that it's an attempt to reproduce a Smile listening experience.

Seeing as how the Platinum Collection used stereo mixes for H&V and the Pet Sounds tracks, I can't help wondering if we'll see some of these new stereo mixes like GV cropping up on this hits compilation.

Btw, did you know that Happy Birthday was copyrighted. Not sure if it still is.  3D

Depends who you ask. A lot of people who've looked at the history say the copyright isn't valid. Warner Music, who claim to own the copyright, claim it is. Warner Music can afford better lawyers than you or me, so they'd probably win Wink

As I (possibly incorrectly) understand it, Happy Birthday To You is copyrighted on account of when its lyrics were written, the song where the tune originally appeared Good Morning To All is public domain.  On the commentary track for an episode of Futurama, they mention that they didn't have Happy Birthday used in a birthday scene because they didn't want to pay the royalties.  I can't remember if it was in that particular commentary, but I've heard somewhere that this would even extend to using an instrumental version in a birthday context, because it would still count as a version of Happy Birthday To You and the person with the lyric rights gets some royalties anyway (viz. Gene Rodenberry's Star Trek theme lyrics being a bit of sharp practice to get him money from something that was almost always going to be used instrumentally).
