I decided today to finish a song fitting for this day. Hope someone'll like it Smiley. It's the one on the top of my soundcloud page:). And no no, it's not a cover of the BB song even though they have the same title.

I just tried this and hired Adam Marsland to record some drum tracks for a song and it worked brilliantly Smiley.

As I live in Norway, we did all the correspondence through e-mail. He went carefully forward and asked after making a draft and after making changes if I were displeased with anything or wanted things differently. He was very easy, friendly and not least professional to communicate with - which I consider a crucial combination as email correspondence on this kind of thing _could_ create misunderstandings and such boring things. I just received the drum tracks yesterday, so I haven't gotten the chance to start working on the song with these tracks yet, but isolated and in a draft with the song they sound excellent and beyond what I expected!

As far as trying out studio work through the internet for the first time goes, I highly recommend this Smiley

@SloopJohnB
I understand some of the vocals are quite "amatur" but
That's part of the experience in my opinion.

@Puppet-Pony
Unfortunately I'm not in possession of a real piano, only a keyboard, but I made due with it, I've actually never taken a piano lesson! Wonderful was really tough to pull off because I've only written 3 or 4 new vocal arangements, then all the parts had to be recorded. I think you got the full effect of the album, it's not trying to BE a cover of smile, its supposed to be an expression of SMiLE.

What kind of music do you usually write? Anything on the same scale of arrangement? How did you record, computer, software?

This made me laugh and smile Smiley Very fun to listen to! It's like a very lo-fi indiepop twisted SMiLE. Its unique(sometimes) expression and its flaws makes it at times so much less stiff and dead-like almost all other BB/SMiLE covers. Wish the piano had a different sound, loved the playing itself of it, but the sound I didn't like. The vocals on Wonderful were quite quite impressive. Vocals other places, not so. Surf's up vocals are great Smiley Backing vocals are perfect and out of tune in a most pleasant way! Also really liked the lead vocals, the alternative melody you came up with at the high parts was of good choice. I liked it best when it sounded less like SMiLE and more like a something really strange something incarnation of SMiLE. So soothing for a brain filled up with strong coughing medicin Smiley.

Very nice sweet song Smiley I really liked your vocals on this one. Very nice harmonies and I really like the tone of your lead vocals!

About the mix, I unfortunately found it a little bit messy. The acoustic guitar being the main issue for me, how did you record it? It sounds a little bit like it's recorded with a jack plugged into the acoustic guitar. I would pan it more to the right and turn down the volume so it doesn't stick out so much. I guess this is just my taste, but I would maybe re-record and go for a more conventional acoustic guitar sound - more fluffy-like, I think it would accompany the nice piano sound/playing and the natural drum-sound very well.

I'm maybe boring, but I would try a more typical mix, with the drums(snare) in the middle, and vocals, and pan other instruments further out to their own panning-place so each would get more space so it'd become clearer. And, turn up the volume of the snare!

Also, I'm not completely sure, but some instruments sound like they have a weird kind of reverb and are sticking out, not sure. Did you use a stereo reverb on them - it doesn't like it on some instruments? Also, I would maybe try to use a bit more compressor on the lead vocals, for more level consistency - maybe. Not sure! And definitely turn up the volume of the background vocals, those are sweet and deserve more attention Smiley

These are just my opinions, so I hope I don't sound cruel, or like I know better or anything!

Anyway, a very nice song indeed!

Nice song, enjoyed it Smiley! The highlights for me, was the "cacophonous"-part, works great as a sweet chorus and fits perfectly to the rest of the song! And, the weird spooky part in the verses, I love it, didn't see it coming! Think maybe those parts should be louder in volume. Your vocals remind me a little bit of musical-vocals in the verses, which works fine, but they sounded a lot sweeter in the "chorus" part!

Interesting piece of music. I like the sound of the production, especially some of the bass parts which are very Pet Sounds-like...

Thanks! If someone would bother, I'm very open and happy for criticism about arrangement or tips for production. I still haven't started the mixing of my songs, so would be nice to have some more things to put on my to-do-list.

sounds like the High Llamas a bit

or like, Sean Lennon meeting with Sean O'Hagen over yogurt and green tea and coming up with some music

Thanks for the response and for you listening Smiley I just heard some songs by the High Llamas, and I see what you mean! The other comparison sounds very lovely! For myself, I think it sounds like a mix of a poor mans george benson - breezin' and I wanna-be the surf-guitar in pet sounds Smiley

I'm nowadays working on something I'd like to call an album, and got one instrumental song which I think is sometimes inspired by Pet Sounds(the song). Despite my usage of different of chords is very very limited. I'm not done with the mix or the planned fade out. Hope it's enjoyable and not boring! Smiley

Welcome on board Smiley. I'm not sure since I'm a newbie myself, but I think it would be more appropriate to post in the "welcome to the smiley... board". But, as you're already here. What's your top 4 songs by the BB, right noooow?
