Am I right in thinking that one of the live versions that's circulating is a home recording of a (Radio Luxembourg?) broadcast, and that a master or close to it exists in the BB vault?

I may have dreamed this

There  is a live boot of the song that underneath all the nth generation noise sounds like it is a very clear recordig.
28  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Barbara/I've Got a Friend on: July 10, 2013, 11:08:16 PM
Do we know if Dennis conciously rewrote Barbara as I've Got a Friend or is the similarity coincidental?

Same with It's a New Day and I'm Going YourWay?
29  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce on Surf's Up (album) on: February 03, 2013, 07:30:42 PM
It's funny how tastes differ, the only Bruce song on a BB album I like is Tears in the Morning, and the alternate mix that circulates is far better than the album mix IMHO.

I'm not sure if this is one of the tracks Andrew speaks of, but there is a version of The Night Was So Young with an instrumental section playing the "Is Somebody..." melody. I always thought it would have been nice if the released version had faded out with this part.
I thought the rough mix of Mona was much better with the saxes mixed up front.

Are there any recordings (audience or otherwise) for any of Brian Wilson's Gershwin concerts?  I've never come across any.

Caveat: I'm not asking for them, just wondering if there are any recordings.

I cannot for the life of me find sheet music for Gettin' Hungry, anybody have it? Or even a midi of it?

also if anybody has pdfs of the bwps sheet music that'd be nice

It's not sheet music, but here's the chart for it:

Gettin' Hungry  (Brian Wilson/Mike Love)

(original key: B)

Intro: C........F........C........F

...Dm................................................Am
I wake up in the mornin' just to work all through the day
..........Dm....................................................Am
That sun can get so hot that you can sweat your strength away
............F................Dm7.....................G7
And ooooohhhhhhhh come the night time

...............C...............................F
Gettin' hungry, hungry for my kind o' woman
....................C...................................F
I'm gettin' hungry, soon I gotta find me a woman
....................C......................................G7
I'm gettin' hungry, searchin' for a pretty girl

...........Dm...............................................................Am
But I still get up in the mornin' though it's so hard all day long
.........Dm..............................................................Am
If it weren't for the love of a woman I don't think I'd continue on
...........F..............Dm7........................G7
And ooooohhhhhhhh come the night time

....................C7..........F7
I'm gettin' hungry, hungry, for my kind of woman

C...................................F
Hungry, hungry for my kind o' woman
....................C...................................F
I'm gettin' hungry, soon I gotta find me a woman
....................C......................................G7
I'm gettin' hungry, searchin' for a pretty girl

From the recordings of the two Hawaii shows Brian sounds like the one most into the performance.  The Baldwin is the foundation instrument on all the songs and he takes a fair few leads as well.  Dennis is the one who sounds like he's on another planet, there are either no drums or the most minimalist you've ever heard.

Til I Die is where I first thought hang on, there's something going on with his voice.  It does sound a lot weaker than say something like Good Time (is there one or two years between these recordings?).  Having said that, he still nails the lower falsetto line in the round at the end.
37  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: October 24, 2012, 10:13:17 PM
I think we have speculated on this before, and it kind of ties into the Surf's Up discussion above....but why was Brian so loathe to do leads starting around the Sunflower/Surf's Up area? He was still obviously involved in many of the tracks they were cutting at the time in some way or another. Mickey Mouse syndrome? Self-confidence or drug issues?

I think it came down to his physical shape deteriorating (which was helped by the drugs, cigarettes and most likely lack of exercise - which go hand in hand) literally making it physically difficult for him to sing after he hit his mid 20's

That'd be it. I love Brian's late 60s/early 70s vocals (it may be my favorite era of his voice, honestly), but by then, Carl was better suited for songs like "Surf's Up" than Brian was. I don't doubt there was emotion in his voice in his leads, but singing something like that is pretty taxing if you're out of shape (if you can do it at all). Desper posted recently that Brian was not able to hit the notes in the "Columnated ruins domino" part anymore, at least not effectively. I really hope his attempts at the lead still exist somewhere, but I doubt it.

I love the almost metallic sound to his falsetto on Sunflower (particularly his backing falsetto on This Whole World).  IIRC I read somewhere that in the 2000s someone bet Brian a steak dinner that he couldn't hit the high note in Surf's Up anymore.  Brian won the bet apparently.

Some of his leads during this era are still very nice, like his lead for Sail Plane song.

I did a Humble Harv type mix of H&V - it follows the form of the Cantina mix up until Cantina and then goes to IIGS - BY - OMP - YAMS - False Barnyard fade.  IT works quite well.

In 1993, we had the original 2-fers, Sony/Epic albums, Endless Summer, Spirit of America, Made In USA, and maybe the Absolute Best series available by the time the Good Vibrations Box Set appeared. It sold pretty well despite having all of those other releases out there.

Not to be a downer but, in 1993 people were buying CD's at a much higher clip.
I bet that has been taken into account and the units adjusted. Most diehard fans will make the purchase.

I'm not convinced by that.  If the box is mostly released stuff with a smattering of new rarities, I would think the majority of fans would simply download the tracks they don't have, either legitimately or not rather than buying the full boxset.
If no profit is to be made, then why is Capitol comitting to it? Just to be nice guys? You don't think they know what needs to be sold to make a profit? Do you really think they would release it if they know it will lose money?

I think Capitol know exactly what they are doing and I believe there will most likely be a lot of previously unreleased material.  I was responding to the post that die hard fans will buy it regardless of what's on it.

Some of the unreleased stuff I'd like to see on it are:

Mony Mony (and the other 15 big one out takes like Sea Cruise etc..)

Think you'll find "Sea Cruise" was released over 30 years ago.  Roll Eyes
I knew as soon as I typed that you'd pull me up on it.

re: Paley Sessions Saturday Morning in the City and Soul Searchin' both sound good on GIOMH (despite what anyone says, they used the Paley instrumental tracks with some overdubs).

The only thing I can think of to add to this is the audience recording of the first RAH Smile gig as it's the premiere.

Royal Festival Hall

True.  Damn my acronyms Smiley

Isn't it Brian who is the 'owner' who is having the argument with the rest?  I love how "what are you doing" is said.
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: THE BEST Surf's Up revelation. on: September 05, 2012, 11:20:37 PM
"Little Bird" also features the bass pattern from the first movement of "Surf's Up"

That bass line pattern is Brian Wilson's standard piano left hand - 90% of his piano parts feature that bass pattern in the left hand.

I've been listening to your Smile A.D mix the last couple of days.  I am blown away with how you've layered and manipulated various vocals to fit some of the incomplete tracks.  Look in particular sounds fantastic.  I love the use of 2004 Brian on I Wanna Be Around and the backing vocals, the extra vocals on Love To Say Da Da, Child Is Father of the Man and Holidays.  Absolutely superb work, and I'll be using these 'extra vocals' versions to replace the ones I've been using in my own SMiLE mix.

Thanks for all your hard work, and making it available as the Smile Fan Toolkit.

Are any of the officially released mixes of SC the same as the one on the comp reel commonly bootlegged as Landlocked?
