Tidal have the entire set in Dolby Atmos. Presumably an upmix?
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Interview 1977 at Brother Studios on: November 22, 2022, 01:18:58 AM
Why is it so hard to believe that Dennis could play the guitar? Isn't he playing acoustic on one of The Beatles covers on the Party album? I also thought he played acoustic on I'd Love Just Once to See You
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is your Smile Track Listing? on: October 01, 2016, 05:13:29 PM
My SMiLE track list was created by listening to the various little bits and assembling them how I felt musically they fit together.

Do You Like Worms?
Surf's Up
Great Shape/Barnyard/Old Master Painter/You Were My Sunshine

Old Man River (my own edit using parts of both released versions)
Cabinessence
Heroes and Villains Part 2 (my own edit using various part 2 sections and the chorus from Heroes and Villains plus an alternative of Bag of Tricks and My Children were raised)
Wonderful

Child is Father of the Man (my own edit)
Our Prayer
Good Vibrations
Fire
I Wanna Be Around/Workshop

I much prefer the earlier mix of Mona. Never understood why the saxes were virtually mixed out for the released version.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When was the last time the Beach Boys were an actual live rock band? on: June 11, 2015, 05:28:21 PM
Good to see Brian so into the performance and very audible on the piano.
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How much has Stamos contributed musically to the group over the years? on: June 01, 2015, 06:18:20 PM
Stamos' drumming is fine in that clip of catch a wave. It's started too slow before he comes in, so I doubt there was much he could do.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine as a guitarist. on: May 19, 2015, 03:50:31 PM
I've always thought he was a good solid rhythm guitarist.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What is the most devasting moment in the band's career? on: May 16, 2015, 09:06:58 PM
I'm gonna rank the instance where Denny essentially got told he couldn't tour for his solo album and then return to the Beach Boys, without losing his job within the Beach Boys, as pretty high up there in devastating moments with plenty of wide-ranging (and granted, some speculative) repercussions.  Awful, awful move by his bandmates.
Especially galling as Mike Love then went on and did Celebration.

10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SAN MIGUEL Question on: May 12, 2015, 11:51:57 PM
Isn't there a later 70s remake of San Miguel? I'm sure I've heard a different backing track. Was this a Dennis solo recording session?
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: God Only Knows-Brian sings lead? on: January 02, 2015, 12:38:54 AM
Don't Brian and Carl sing lead together on the Smile recording of Wind Chimes?
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ideas for a BW Box Set on: November 25, 2014, 10:09:14 PM
I'd be happy with a release of the Paley sessions.

Check out Bruce's face when Mike cuts in.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: November 20, 2014, 01:52:32 AM
Hello ? No one here bothered to read the footnote to the 9/29/67 entry ?

"A Bruce Johnston session"

That means... not a Beach Boys session. Bruce offered it to the band when they were looking for material on 20/20.

Yes I read that and I thought it was obviously implied in my post about 20/20 being an odds and sods kind of album.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: November 19, 2014, 11:40:52 PM
-I wonder what Brian's inspiration for Time to Get Along was?

"Time To Get Along" would be a great title for a final Beach Boys album. Smiley

Hey, I didn't know a version of "Bluebirds" was recorded for Wild Honey - is this a new information or did I miss that for a long time?

According to AGD's site there are two sessions for Bluebirds: 29/09/67 and 16/10/68. As 20/20 seems to be an album of 'stuff in the can' I wonder if they're the same recording rather than 16/10/68 being a remake?

Mrs Mills' piano from the Abbey Road keyboard collection is the best tack piano VST I've heard.

Is there a known list of tracks for New Album?
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: AL & BLONDIE IN NYC AT THE RUBIN ON FEBRUARY 7th on: February 12, 2014, 04:59:30 PM
The dumming does sound a lot like Ringo, all those triplet fills and the backbeat thud sounds a lot.like him.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sea Of Tunes Smile vs Smile Sessions Smile on: February 05, 2014, 12:33:19 AM
I personally don't like CD1, but that wasn't why I bought the box. I always listen to my own edit that now sounds great thanks to discs 2 to 4.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Changes/Additions to the Sunflower LP (if any) on: January 03, 2014, 04:55:42 PM
I love Sunflower and wouldn't touch it, though am not totally enamoured of Got To Know The Woman and Deidre.

I would, however, love to see a Sunflower 'sessions' box (or double CD), with a cappella versions and tracks that were recorded/considered for this album in its various permutations.

Here's the back of a double I put together recently. Nearly all the songs were considered, in on form or another, for the Sunflower/Reverberation/Add Some Music album. I know some were recorded after the date the final version of Sunflower was submitted, but I wanted to tidy up a few loose ends - and that's why I included a few songs that predated those sessions.

I should point out that most of these tracks are legally available.

Chain Reaction of Love is a fantastic song.

Aren't the "It's happening again, I thought you were my friend,  help me through this please" falsetto vocals Brian?
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Adult/Child - soniclovenoize reconstruction on: October 25, 2013, 08:41:58 PM
Love your reconstructions thanks so much for putting in the effort.  Particularly liked your reconstruction of Lifehouse.  Have you thought about working some magic on It's A New Day and California Slide?  And before AGD tells me it isn't really called California Slide at the moment I can't remember the real name of the song.  Is it I;m Going Your Way?
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Pitter Patter on: October 20, 2013, 06:01:29 PM
Just a quickie, is it Al singing falsetto on this?
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tongal Contests: California Feelin' & Goin' to the Beach on: July 30, 2013, 04:35:42 PM
Ah, so it is the same recording that's been booted in the past, nicely remixed.  I like how the 'brass' synth sound has been mixed in this version, much less prominent.  Brian's vocal sounds like a scratch vocal and I would probably have mixed out his 'like every day' as it so tentative.  A very nice version of the song, nicely mixed compared to the bootleg version.

So what versions are out there now?

1. Brian's early piano demo
2. Rocky Pamplin version
4. Bootleg mix from late 70s
5. New remix of late 70s version
6. Solo Brian Wilson version from Classics.. CD
7. Solo Al Jardine version from Postcard

As I haven't heard the demo recording, I'd say at the moment Al Jardine's version closely followed by the new remix of the late 70s versions are my favourites.  Solo Brian is probably the worst.  Yes, I think Pamplin's version is better than the solo Brian.
