76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson Sings Gershwin on: April 09, 2010, 12:25:56 PM

(At some point KikMC you're gonna have to tell us what you DO like about the BBs. Either that or head off to the Carpenters Message Board and wind their fans up instead...)

How about opening your eyes to the thread a few topics down entitled "What do the BEach Boys  Mean To You"? Course no one answered that one but three of  us... Hard question, or something? Sleep well. P.S. why does some poster think I'm someone else? I've not posted here before-truly...However from the looks of things it seems some people spend  waaaaaay too much time here....Doe!

Well he likes "Cuddle Up". http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,8625.msg145244.html#msg145244

And I agree. The title is appropriate. Like Sinatra or Fitzgerald. I hope this turns out to be something good. I've liked Gershwin since before The Beach Boys so I hope Brian does him some justice, which I'm sure he's capable of.
77  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why isn't Brian on the 20/20 cover? on: April 09, 2010, 11:57:26 AM
Here's another part of the mystery in regards to 20/20 especially "I can hear music" - . Fact! It has been mentioned on many occasion that this song was the first ever BB's song not to be either written, arranged or produced by Brian and the first where he isn't singing or playing either. In short he had zero to do with it. So why in the linear notes for the twofer CD reissue does Brian write "I wanted the instrumental track of ICHM to be smooth and subliminal. I used acoustic guitars." EH?  Did he shout down instructions to Carl from his bedroom or something?!!!

Does anyone know if Brian even really wrote the notes for all the Capital twofers?
Any info would be much appreciated and hurry as I never know when I'll next be able to gain access to this site!!! LOL!

I think it would be fairer to say Brian dictated the notes to the Capitol 2fers, in response to relevant questions. Said responses were then 'polished'.

So does this mean he had anything to do with ICHM? Did he really have some hand in the production/arrangement?

OK... but if you're going to give your vote to anyone, surely someone with the same surname would - should - be your first choice ?

You would imagine so...but isn't there that more contemporary footage of Brian calling Mike "our main guy" along with Carl in Endless Harmony I think. It seems Brian has always had an image of Mike as the lead Beach Boy, even when Carl was doing most of the production, etc. Of course, Brian could feel completely different, but he's always appeared to tout Mike as the "face" of the Beach Boys I suppose.

Only With You...that thing screams wedding. One of Mike's most gentle lyrics.
80  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: April 06, 2010, 03:13:54 PM
Somehow I've mixed articles up...however, even though the quote is very familiar to me I don't recall having ever read that Crawdaddy article. Strange.
81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: April 06, 2010, 02:20:53 PM
It's actually from an article in Sounds, August 13, 1977. "I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are" by Vivien Goldman. Dennis calls "15 Big Ones" bullmerda basically and says they've been working on wordless stuff. So I always thought that must've been in sessions leading up to "Love You".
82  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Had Sunflower been a hit... on: April 01, 2010, 04:52:11 PM
"All I Wanna Do," "This Whole World," and "It's About Time" scream counter-culture to these ears. Granted I wasn't around at that time, but they definitely sound of the era. As much as Warner promoted the album I think they missed out on that angle.
IAT was the only thing close to "counter culture" at the time. That, along with CCW and surprisingly ASM got decent airplay, but it didn't help sell the album. It just wasn't their time yet. After Big Sur, things started turning around for their live act.

Agree to disagree... Grin. I think "All I Wanna Do" blasting at full volume and a "J" ( Smokin) would definitely sway your opinion however...
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Mythbusters on: April 01, 2010, 04:47:00 PM
MYTH:  The story of The Fantastic Mr. Fox.  It's a work of fiction by the wonderful Roald Dahl.

FACT:  I loved the book as a kid, just saw the movie (loved that too) AND it has a cool soundtrack with (and this is pertinent to why I am posting this) 3 Beach Boys songs (two of them being extra suede choice-wise!  Smokin)

Ol' Man River wasn't even an album track! Is the version in the film extended or a different mix because I didn't recognize some of the parts when I saw the film. Anderson always has a keen ear for music in his films...his seemingly sudden interest in the Boys makes me hope there will be a more widespread reevaluation of their post-Pet Sounds material in the near future. It'd be nice to hear "Yes! Awesome, Beach Boys!" as opposed to "Really?" when I tell someone new they're my favorite band...
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Mythbusters on: March 31, 2010, 11:07:19 AM
Myth: Jan Berry wrote all of the Beach Boys' hits.

Fact: It was actually CHUCK Berry who wrote most of them, except for the one's Brian wrote in Holland...

?

86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which album has the worst flow? on: March 29, 2010, 11:48:08 PM
To me, it's gotta be 15 Big Ones...idk why it wasn't one half oldies/one half originals...but to include oddities like Everyones in Love & Susie Cincinnati are baffling as well. I'll put together the perfect tracklist, if there is one for this cluttered album.

Sea Cruise should've been on there for sure, and the single mix of Rock n Roll Music
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which album has the worst flow? on: March 29, 2010, 10:10:57 PM
Friends has Transcendental Meditation on it. Do not discount this.

I don't mind said song, but think it would've been cool to add "I Went to Sleep" after that...a great little closer.
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: March 29, 2010, 10:08:25 PM
I thought it was about the ego-death often reported during intense psychedelic experiences...they didn't like the drug reference. I think.

Can anyone tell what kind of cigs those are on the table?

Imagine the ad: WANTED:  get paid very well to sit 8  hours a day with 2 twenty minute breaks to watch old reels looking for  particular archival footage of the Beach Boys. Call....
Mark

Dream job...
91  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can Brian still do falsetto? on: March 28, 2010, 09:03:47 PM
Here's a rather interesting video of Brian singing his original part to "Surfer Girl", at a party in 1991.  Though a little rough, its really not that bad, and there are moments in there that sound just like the original recording.

Discuss   Grin

The vocals don't bug me as much as the fact that the band seems lost for a while there. Thankfully Brian chimes in with a "speed it up". Thanks for the video.
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why isn't Brian on the 20/20 cover? on: March 28, 2010, 08:54:42 PM
A better question would be why isn't Brian on "I Can Hear Music," it's a Spector cover!
Well if Bruce Johnston remembers right, he didn't sing on that one.

I believe it's apparent that TdHabib knows this. I think he was just commenting how odd it is that the first song that did not include Brian at all was a Spector cover. You figure he would've been pretty hyped to sing even backing on that, considering his love for Spector's music...So what was Brian up to at the time that he couldn't contribute? Clearly his voice is all over the Sunflower tracks that were recorded in early 69, but for the last couple months of 68 he was pretty quiet.
93  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Surf's Up on: March 28, 2010, 08:47:27 PM
I really like Looking At Tomorrow. It's short, but sweet. Especially that flanged sound that permeates every note of the song.
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: March 28, 2010, 08:45:03 PM
Unlike most, I actually love "Add Some Music Too Your Day". It's able to penetrate past the part of my brain that would normally notice how corny the lyrics are and directly bury itself in the overgrown child part of me.

Indeed, the lyrics are corny. However, they're also very true. Great lyrics because they speak the truth and don't care whether it's "hip" or not.
95  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite Genius/Quirky moments of BW post Smile on: March 27, 2010, 12:15:34 PM
"Don't sit around on your ass, smoking grass..."

Brian said this? Who would've thought...
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite Genius/Quirky moments of BW post Smile on: March 26, 2010, 03:16:20 PM
I Went to sleep - the snoring, and of course the whole song
Busy Doin' Nothin' - the directions to his house - brilliant lyrics!
When a Man Loves a Woman - the goofy roller skating rink organ solo - that was Brian, wasn't it?
Had to Phone Ya - the "you . . . you" repeated way past reason . . . first time I heard it it was WTF?
Johnny Carson - when Mike lisps "such a manly tone" - I assume that was Brian's idea
Solar System - "if Mars had life on it, I might find my wife on it" - genius!  Laughed my ass off when I first heard that.

All classics. Humor is one of the most unique aspects of the Boys music.
97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian or Dennis - who was/is the better piano player? on: March 26, 2010, 03:07:29 PM
Brian's piano and organ work on 15 Big Ones is keeping me in the Brian camp. Dennis' piano playing is a bit too boring in my opinion.
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favorite Backing Track? on: March 26, 2010, 02:58:24 PM
Hard to say...how about a top 3? In chronological order, as of right now:

Amusement Parks USA
All I Wanna Do
Honkin' Down the Highway

And listening to "Blueberry Hill" right now, I have to say it's a pretty ballsy arrangement...that bass...etc.

Rickie and Blondie had lots of hair, too.

I love Child of Winter. It is utterly baffling to me; and I've never heard anything that sounds as inventive and demented at the same time. Strange how it's hardly ever mentioned but (I think) this was Brian's first solo production since "Add Some Music"...what a change in such a short time.
