another question concerning when the guys wanted to change their name simply to Beach:

When was this?

I have a feeling it would have just lasted for one album or one tour (assuming it would have been a failure of an idea)...what album would fit the name Beach with its title?

Pg. 147, chapter 9 in Carlin's book says it was early 1969. Desper even says that Brian had something written up and signed by himself, but the other guys obviously didn't go for it. Imagine, Sunflower would be the first (and possibly only) album by The Beach. If a band were to have only one album it couldn't get much better than that.

Wow, yeah I never noticed that! But then again, I don't listen to early Beatles or late Beach Boys too often.

So, were they a surfin' band in the studio for roughly 3 years?  I doubt much of the public realizes the BB focused such a relatively short amount of time in this genre in the studio.

Here's a related question:  did they record their final "car" song around this time?

The public knows squat about the BBs in relation to this. Everyone always associates them with surfing and cars, and I'm always having to explain that they didn't even sing about surfing (with rare excptions) past 1964. I blame the beautiful Endless Summer comp...and the Beach Boys themselves, of course.
55  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which album has the worst flow? on: April 26, 2010, 09:27:55 AM
I love both those songs (live version of We Got Love...so far as I know the studio version isn't around?)

It's out there.

It's also a bit of a let down compared to the live version, imo. Like some other BB songs, it's too slow and plodding, not performed with enough energy in the studio. Still a great song that should've been on the album though.

I like GIOMH simply for the fact that It actually sounds like a Brian Wilson recording. There are little musical touches off and on that remind me of Pet Sounds. Not that GIOMH is anywhere near Pet Sounds, mind you. But I listen to songs like You've Touched Me and GIOMH, and I can hear little brief shades and hints of PS.

Exactly what makes it a worthwhile production for me. Plus, I, for some insane reason, don't think his vocals are that awful. "You've Touched Me" which people have often used as an example, is probably my favorite on the album--it's a simple Brian Wilson love song, that is, really, very endearing. Too me he doesn't sound uninterested as much as comfortable just singing over his music. No frills or pretension, he's just making BW music. Plus, that tag! BW always has the best tags and this one's up there with Melt Away and all the others he's done--amazing.

Some of the Paley tapes are on GOIMH!
I happen to think that GIOMH is Brian's best album.

I actually like a lot of it. At least it sounds like a Brian Wilson production, which is more than can be said for Imagination or even 88. I don't know what else everyone hears that is so awful. Yes some of the vocals are a bit off, but it's Brian we're talking about...
58  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anyone Know how many copies these lp's have sold over the year? on: April 23, 2010, 10:47:28 AM
Endless Summer has to be a couple million right? It's a beautiful day in California right now and I can easily see how that comp became so popular. My favorite BB is definitely post Pet Sounds but there is no denying the youthful power of those early songs. And yeah, sealed copies of 15 Big Ones and Love You are still available on eBay.

That is what makes Ronda better than Rhonda imo.

Further evidence you're not crazy .....but that Brian is!

Thank you, that was awesome. Honkin Down the Highway sounded great live too. Especially the crazy drumming.

That horn line behind "tossed and I turned my head was so heavy" is killer

Printed the same in the chord book I have. Strange that the typo would keep getting out there in multiple publications. However, La Calma is right down the street from me. Interesting. Perhaps my bro's co-worker thought the Sunrays were the Beach Boys! Though I assume the guys (Carl especially) would've been out to Audree's not infrequently.

When you say "most of all" you sound like singer-songwriter Mirah. Pretty good all around by the way.
64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's Home Studio on: April 14, 2010, 07:43:02 PM
This isn't completely on topic, but it is related. So my home town is Whittier, CA, a suburb of LA. Today my brother sends me a text claiming that there is a house that an older coworker claims the BB used to record at once in a while very close to my house, in the "Friendly Hills" are of town. I told him I doubt any recording was done but wouldn't necessarily discount the Wilson's showing up to Audree's house (she did live in Whittier, correct?) to play some tunes once in a while. I also know that Sea of Tunes did have some type of office in Whittier as I have an old BB chord book that was published there.

So anyone (AGD) know anything about this? And possibly where Audree lived? It would only reinforce the eerie connections between me and the BB...Thanks in advance if anyone can find any info on this.

Oh, and those pictures on beachboyscentral.com are terrible. Bruce looks like a gremlin!

Al looks out of it, to say the least...what the heck was he smoking? And Dennis looks pretty skinny.
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys writeup of mine (Ranking their albums) on: April 14, 2010, 07:26:37 PM
"I dare you to smoke some dro and not dig the hell out of the laid back mellow grooves of Friends."  LOL. Some interesting rankings. I say, keep on listening and those are bound to shift around a bit. And welcome.

David Leaf's book (2nd edition), p149. Everyone except Brian.

Yeah, I've seen that edited one. Isn't there one with Brian in the back, looking depressed as hell, drinking a beer? I'm pretty sure I've seen such a photo (online even) but can't seem to find a copy of it...thanks for the help though.
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce Johnsone & Blondie Chaplin getting fired on: April 13, 2010, 10:06:56 AM
While we're on this time period could anyone please point me to the last group photo with Bruce before he left? I've seen it before I believe, but can't find a copy. Thanks.
69  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: more raw/lo-fi brian wilson demos?! on: April 13, 2010, 10:02:34 AM
All of these aforementioned recordings are amazing. Love "It's Over Now". So sad. "That Special Feeling" and "They're Marching Along" are amazingly joyous for the period they were written during, and they definitely pass that on to the listener. I like how Mike says "that's a nice spiritual song" at the end of "Marching". I think he means it, too.
70  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love's Lyrics Are Underappreciated on: April 13, 2010, 09:58:57 AM
and this begs the question I've had for a long time - why didn't Al and Brian write together more often?  And for that matter, why didn't Brian write much with the others (if at all)?  Why didn't say Dennis and Mike write more together - or did they always dislike each other?   And I've wondered if Dennis had become the main source of songs in 67/68 onward (with Mike and others supplying some of the lyrics) what...that would have been pretty cool  group hug

I know it's a little off topic but I can't stand nearly half of Dennis' writing. Or at least how he recorded things. A lot of POB and especially the work on CATP is extremely melodramatic. Awful, maudlin, etc. For instance, I like "River Song" but the over the top track and backing vocals kill it for me. Sorry had to get that out as a group hug is the last thing much of Dennis' work inspires in me!

Back to topic however...I was listening to "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)" in the car this morning. As a young man at approximately the same age as Brian when he recorded this song, I have to say whoever wrote the lyrics was spot on. Mike or Brian, it doesn't matter who, captured the uncertainty of the age. Although a song called "When I Grow Up" might sound juvenile, the questions raised by the lyrics are as honest as it gets. Wonderful words.
71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mount Vernon and Fairytale Music on: April 12, 2010, 10:19:19 AM
Yeah this has inspired me to do a synth based Brian playlist - Switched on Wilson!

Great avatar - is that the one from the spring sessions, where he's playing a synth?

I did the same thing, but it came out kind of short! I didn't want to include "Love You" material, only work from before, since "Love You" seems more like the "commercial" and logical outcome of the arcane music he was making in 71-72.

And yeah, it is him playing an ARP Odyssey. http://www.analogsuicide.com/latest/2009/12/20/arp-odyssey-love-brian-wilsonplus-sample-hold-from-retrosoun.html

It'd be awesome to see how Brian approaches country arrangements. That is if he was responsible for them on the album.
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mount Vernon and Fairytale Music on: April 10, 2010, 10:21:17 PM
Why is it that the "Fairytale Music" mix from the Good Vibrations box set has extra parts--that high pitched melody line in the very beginning? And yet it is lacking, for instance, that ascending synth line (00:23-27) in the background on the regular CD version. What is with the vastly different mixes released? Any one know? Some vocals (what sounds like Brian backing on Radio King Dom) come out better on the box set mix, too.

Overall though, this is a real fascinating period in Brian's work. Who would've thought that the guy who made Surfer Girl would be creating these synth drenched soundscapes only 10 years later. It's unfortunate we have so little of this sound, it's way ahead of it's time. "Sweet Mountain," "Funky Pretty" and "Mount Vernon" are all unlike anything else I've heard from pop music during that time.
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love's Lyrics Are Underappreciated on: April 10, 2010, 10:07:02 PM
I'll be the first to admit that Brian is my favorite Beach Boy, mainly because I, like many, discovered his music before the other guys contributions. However, if there is one thing I don't like about Beach Boys fans, is that so many of them (especially said Brianistas) trash on Mike Love. Honestly, apart from what he is/was personally like, he's added a great amount to their legacy.

California Girls. Good Vibrations. Pretty much all of Wild Honey. All I Wanna Do. Big Sur. Mike has contributed great lyrics to many songs. He is, in my opinion, probably Brian's greatest collaborator.

And really I'm sure all of the guys, Brian included, did many things during their lives that would've made them difficult people to be around, intentional or not.
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Opinions Wanted on: April 10, 2010, 12:42:38 PM
"All I Want To Do" (from 20/20).
No, seriously, "All I Wanna Do" (from Sunflower)...very romantic!
But, as a choice between the two you mentioned..."Only With You".
"Forever" is, after all, a sad song (in the last verse, he sings about going away, although not forever, but still...)

"All I Wanna Do" has to be the best love song I've ever heard.
