Yes - the Brian parts are from Smile, too.
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question re. SMiLE Songs Included on Smiley Smile on: October 27, 2007, 06:56:59 PM
No one knows why for certain;  it is one of the great Smile mysteries. Theories: 1. Brian (and the group) wanted tracks solely played by the group -  no outsiders* 2. Brian simply didn't like the Smile versions/ wasn't done tinkering w/ them and must have liked the Smiley versions "enough" to release them or 3. the Smile versions were too complex to deal with/mix/edit - a good example being Vegetables. Simpler was better.
*but interestingly, Brian did use part of the Smie version of Vegetables for the acapella ending and fade.

I thought someone was chastising Brian for engineering at the board - which only an engineer in the union was supposed to be doing.

I think it belongs exactly where it ended up: trash bin.
Ouch!
I think it's neat to have some Smile discussion again on this board. There are plenty of mysteries left to solve. And Cabin Essence is certainly one of them.

How did you virtually isolate Brian's lead on Wonderful?

[Guess: you meticulously syched-up an out of phase version of the instrumental-only take w/ w an in-phase version w/ the vocal? And if you did, my hat's off to you!!]
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surf's Up 1966 Demo on: June 16, 2007, 05:11:06 PM
Using software one could nearly isolate the piano or vocals.

Clean stereo mixes, I think would be the most appealing thing.
Josh 'H',
in your current position have you heard any Smile or Smile related tracks form the master tapes? Anything interesting to report? Are they any closer to rolling out the download website?
Thanks,
Paul

I thnk it is the Mike Love vocal that is said to be rushed. If the chorus sounds "off" you may be hearing the stereo version that features the 'not so great' sync-up of the vocals to the stereo instrumental tracks.

Mark,
When you worked on putting together the excellent Good Vibrations stereo instrumental mix on the new cd single, did you take a crack at synching-up the original mono single, just to see what would happen? If so, how did it sound? Could such a mix ever find commercial release?

Mark,
I'm totally digging Track 4 of the Good Vibrations single CD! Wow!! Beautiful, all true stereo instrumental version of the single!
How long did it take you to: 1 identify all the correct secxtions/takes? 2 put it together as a final mix?
Paul
P.S. Stereo nuts - you must get this, now.

Whoa! Daryl Dragon wrote the vocal parts at the end? Whos there singing it?

I love the tag...its one of the most gorgeous vocals Ive ever listened to...
Truly. And it reminds me of the Hawaiian part from Little Pad somewhat, too.

Brian sings "that's why the child." And a copy of the handwritten lyric sheet that  Mr. Doe mentioned can be seen on p. 46 of the Desper book, "Recording the Beach Boys."

Hopefully, snippets of the vocal sessions from "Look."

Agree completely, Mr. P.F.- the released version is also one of the few preofessionally produced records I know that has an edit that's so bad it's distracting.
Joe, what do you hear as the bad edit?

19  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: December 28, 2005, 05:09:15 PM
Stephen,
Way back when, you had mentioned the possibility of record companies making multitracks available so that fans could perform their own mixes of their favorite material. It looks like we have entered that era. Billy Joel's new retrospective "My Lives" includes a couple tunes that can be mixed (and augmented w/ loops, etc) from an included 8-track set-up via "Umixit."
From the Billy Joel site:
"As an added bonus for Billy Joel fans, the My Lives box-set presents two songs--"Zanzibar" and "I Got To Extremes" (Live, Never Released)--in the revolutionary eight channel, multi-track UmixIt format. A groundbreaking new interactive music experience, UmixIt technology allows the listener to create personalized mixes on a PC. Using UmixIt, fans may mute, solo or add effects to the original recording; record new instrumental or vocal parts; or remix tracks with pre-loaded loops. With UmixIt, the creative possibilities are limitless."
Interesting?
