I have yet to hear Animals--maybe I've been sidetracked by that ridiculous pig which I believe escaped its moorings and floated off!  LOL A good friend likes it so maybe I should give it a try...

Haha, don't let the floating pig dissuade you from listening, JK. "Animals" is actually about people.  Wink

the bass part and sound from All I Wanna Do.

Yes, absolutely a wonderful bass line. Helps to create what I would describe as an otherworldly, warm, ethereal soundscape. It sounds (looks?) like swirling, shimmering orange and gold colors. (I relate to music on more of an emotional and mentally visual(?) level, rather than a technical one. Maybe that sounds weird, but that's the best way I can explain it.)

On this dreary, rainy afternoon, Pink Floyd's "One of These Days" randomly came to mind. I love the thumping double-tracked bass in this song. To me it contributes to the song sounding nightmarish, black, dark blues and washed out greys, like being lost in a cold, dark labyrinth of abandoned buildings being pursued by an evil presence.

Cat in the ava is found in the Internet. I collect retro cat pics. It's the best. Do your cats sit catloaf? Isn't it cutest cat pose? Seeing it is like "d'aw!".

Retro cat pic collecting seems like a fun hobby! My cats all sit the catloaf way, very cute indeed. I love how they tuck all their paws under themselves for catloaf. Another cute pose is when they are totally relaxed they sometimes lie on their backs with their bellies up and all four paws stretched out. They don't have a care in the world!

Talking of cats (which everyone seems to be these days):

 LOL

Great choice, though, thanks for the link. Along those lines, I've often felt that "Cats" could have been a song on Animals...

^ There's pic making rounds in google pics with Al & cat beside.

Sweet. :D Tell the cat(s) name(s) & breed(s). What's their main characteristics. You gotta talk up yer 4-pedal pets. Smiley

Oh my goodness, I found it! The pic with Al and a cat...warms my heart to know he likes cats!

Well, RR, I have 5 cats, all domestic shorthairs from various animal shelters. One is a gray tortie, two brown tabbies, and two orange tabbies.

How about you? I'm guessing the cat in your avatar is your kitty?

We denying artist A, B or C's significance means zero anyway. They'll keep being significant. But, there's solution  Smiley - simply to not give flying fig about the artist's significance if you can't stand their music, be it songs, singing voice etc.

Is it due to Mick Jagger's vocs, beachcat? Many dislike RS since MJ is main singer.

Btw, is username blend - being BBs & cat fan?

The reason I don't like the Rolling Stones is primarily Mick Jagger's vocals, yes. Generally when the RS come on my Sirius XM app, I change the channel.

And yes, my username comes from being both a BBs and cat fan. Kitties are the best! While I do know that both Brian and Carl had dogs at some point, I wonder if any of the Beach Boys liked cats too or had them as pets?

No Roger Waters = no Pink Floyd.

Again, we agree. Although I liked Division Bell when it came out, in my head I don't think of it as a Floyd album.

As an aside, I saw Roger Waters' The Wall in 2010 and he totally owned it. Fantastic show.

I hear you, RR, and I also do not understand the shaming thing. So I don't like Bob Dylan...big deal. Now, I don't deny his significance with regard to American culture in the 1960s. I just don't like his vocals--it's really that simple. I don't freak out when people tell me they don't like the Beach Boys--their loss, I think, but I don't stand there and denigrate them.

Wanna know a secret? I don't like the Rolling Stones, either.  Razz Wink

As a matter of interest how many years did Brian stay this trim ?

I'm not sure...in the pics of him I've seen from 1989-1992 he's wearing mostly loose-fitting button down shirts, so it's hard to tell.
36  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the \ on: April 07, 2019, 08:28:08 PM
The Animals did it the best. Dylan's is epic fail. He's terrible singer.

I agree with everything you've said here!

I had a college roommate who adored Dylan, but much as I tried, I could not get over his vocals...

Thanks for the story, thelonelysea! I don't doubt that the events unfolded that way!
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Last Beach Boys song you heard on the radio on: April 06, 2019, 06:41:20 PM
I love fun little threads like these! Thanks, BananaLouie.

I don't listen to regular radio, because it's difficult for me to get good radio reception here in the Appalachians. But I do have Sirius XM, and the last BBs song I heard on there was "Good Vibrations" on the '60s on 6 channel. They seem to play that and "I Get Around" fairly often. Though I also heard "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" on there once recently. Gotta say, I really miss the special Beach Boys channel they had last summer.

Sure Smiley  If I had to choose three songs as my favorites from Flaming Pie they would be:

1. The Song We Were Singing - It reminds me of hanging out with good friends and just doing nothing

2. The World Tonight - I love the edgier lead guitar in this one

3. Calico Skies - Exactly what a sweet little love song should be
What do you think about "Little Willow"?

You know, I hadn't listened to Little Willow in a while, so I just watched the video for it on YouTube, and I have to say, I teared up while watching it. At first I thought it was referring to Linda McCartney, but upon further reading discovered it was written about Maureen Starkey, Ringo's ex-wife.

My favorite bass line ever would be Geddy Lee's in Rush's "YYZ": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdpMpfp-J_I

And in isolation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir-NYVFsSB4

Incredible...

Best in Show was spot on , in my opinion. It's hard for me to watch real dog shows since seeing that film.

I also agree! I've watched it a couple of times already.

My latest movie was Bubba-Hotep. I'm a fan of Bruce Campbell Wink

I’ve lost 57 pounds in the past two years and I’ll be 41 in August...there’s hope for me!

Good for you! That's a fantastic accomplishment.

As for me, I would like to improve my upper body strength as that seems to have faded in the last five or so years.

Hello, beachcat. It's fine. Re: Flaming Pie, you & me both, good album indeed. What's your favorite songs there? Can you share?

Yes, cool pics. He's thinner than even when he's in his 20s.

I agree. I've perused all 100+ pages on this thread, and I'm not certain I've seen Brian looking more fit than he does here. Actually, seeing him this fit at about the age of 46 gives me hope (as a late-30-something) that it is possible for me to maintain a healthy physique into middle age Grin
45  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the \ on: March 13, 2019, 08:19:20 PM
Thanks to reply. I began to think people scared stiff of me, haha! Cheesy Poor folk. Or, only reply if some popular poster did but never start talking themselves.
Anyhoo, didn't like the album. Zero favorites. It may be single such album by Paul. Can you say the same about any Beatle/ Paul?

Hi RR, I'm sorry, I just haven't been on the forum for a bit and didn't see your message Smiley I personally have not listened to Paul McCartney's "New". I only have one of his albums, which is "Flaming Pie," and I adore it. Guess I will have to give "New" a try at some point.

It's okay if you don't like James Taylor, I don't mind Cheesy
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The *official* Brian/BB picture thread on: March 13, 2019, 07:22:38 PM
Guessing they're all from the same photo shoot, since he's wearing the same watch on the left wrist in all three. What excellent shape he was in at this time! Shocked 1988

47  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the 'What are you listening to now?' thread on: February 20, 2019, 07:29:47 PM
Having recently acquired a decent turntable and speakers, and having had a curiosity about vinyl for a long time, I started buying some LPs. I have about a dozen now, and today's listening selection was James Taylor "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon".

James Taylor was in top form in the early 70s. Sweet Baby James (1970), Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon (1971), and One Man Dog (1972) are all fantastic albums. I hadn't listened to JT in a while. Thanks for planting the suggestion.  Smiley

You're welcome, B.E. Hopefully I can acquire Sweet Baby James and One Man Dog on vinyl in the near future. Had SBJ on cassette tape long ago and loved it.
