1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: October 01, 2020, 09:19:14 AM
Is it possible that Melinda could be behind this? Sunflower and Surf's Up are considered to be some of the best group albums, with everyone getting a chance to shine. This goes against the "Brian is the sole genius of the Beach Boys" narrative, so I could see Melinda having a problem with a box set covering this period. From Mike's book, we know she interfered with the C50 tour by changing a setlist and ordering five autotune devices. If she can do that, it seems likely she can get a box set delayed.

Maybe she doesn't like the tracklist. There may not be room for both 'Til I Die (track and backing vocals) and Student Demonstration Time (alternate vocal take) and I could see her lobbying for the former.

I'm just speculating and there's no evidence for this, but it seems plausible to me.

Auto tune is software...unless it’s something like this

https://www.sustainpunch.com/vocal-autotune-pedals/

Everytime I read the thing about “autotune devices being hooked up to the microphones” I shake my head. Read that in Mike’s book and I about wept

There's gotta be at least one computer running the software... So naming it a device is a easy way explaining it to the reader. It's called storytelling Smiley

They're all from that same session as cover photo.
I'm looking for photos from the recording session (the album was recorded in 4 sessions and the party sounds was overdubbed on a 5th)

Are there any photos from the actual Party! sessions?
(Not counting those taken for cover photos)

6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys as part of a wedding on: May 20, 2020, 12:07:45 AM
Congrats!!

Here's the wedding program for my wedding in 2016.
I chose a duo that could be able to handle BB songs. (The guitarist was familiar with Pet Sounds and greatest hits)

God Only Knows

We told the band to be closer to  Leid In Hawaii version than Pet Sounds version. Walking down to the podium during the intro being repeated, when in place they began singing the verse.

I Can Hear Music

One of the few love songs with positive love message only!

Forever

Only With You

This is where I surprised my bride. We had planned all the songs together but she had no idea that I would sing!

Also: We used a slightly sped up version of Disney Girls for our waltz.

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SOngs that the Beach Boys covered on: May 19, 2020, 03:03:30 AM
This is my perspective. The definition of a really good cover is when the general public think of the cover version as the original and not the original.

#1 Barbara Ann - a stellar number one as hardly no one think of the Regents version
#2 I can hear music (the BB version beat Spector on the charts etc)
#3 Sloop John B.

If Mike was stripped of the licence and it went to Brian and Brian / Al / Blondie / maybe David started to tour as The Beach Boys, would Brian get the sole custody of Bruce ?

As I understand it the original agreement between the voting members of BRI was for all members of the band to be able to use the name and pay an amount to BRI for doing so.  After the meeting was over and without discussion Mike offered a higher fee for sole use of the name.  So why not strip Mike and Bruce of the use of the name for bringing the name of the Beach Boys into disrepute and let others use it for a fee - Brian, Al, Blondie and Dave Marks?  They even could offer use of it for backing musicians (as in 'session musician with the Beach Boys'). They may not make the same huge amount of money but they'd make some and at least they'd drag the name out of the gutter.

In order to change the license they need Carl's estate to be onboard as they have 25% each. (And I think they like the money...)
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When Did the Beach Boys' Cheerleaders End? on: January 18, 2020, 06:47:45 AM
Funny, it had been so long since I watched most of those mid 90s concert videos that I had forgotten that they indeed appeared to slash the cheerleader budget prior to removing them, paring it down to two by 1995.

There's the Philadelphia 4th of July 1995 video from a TV airing, and it does indeed appear they only had two cheerleaders at that gig.

Don't know when it was pared back. Here's a show from Europe in 1993 where it appears to be the larger contingent of cheerleaders:

https://youtu.be/Szg9j1fLDc8?t=1111

Here's St. Louis from July 4, 1994, and it still seems to be the full group of dancers:

https://youtu.be/Dn905_69mKk?t=160

Check the clip from Europe! Carl has 3 guys helping him changing guitar after Cal Girls. Pretty obvious it was a much bigger party over all.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / BTTYS in new Disney movie on: January 16, 2020, 12:39:58 AM
Just saw the trailer for Stargirl, new Disney movie on channel Disney+ in March.

Gotta admit, Be true to your school is not your classical goose bumps tune. But in their version it cuts really close!

You’re right.  My kid bought Sunshine Tomorrow with her own money right around the time they made the announcement.

What? I provide my kids with their basic needs. Does she have to buy her own food too?!

Just got back from France, hottest day of the year. Beach Boys playing at Olympia was a real highlight of the vacation!

Not many Smileysmile board members in the crowds, I met a russian fan who had flown from Moscow and a woman from Tokyo both in Paris only for this show.

The setlist was resembling to RAH two days earlier. 46 songs with a very few dull moments.
The audience was on fire, indoors and with a capacity of 1800 it was very intimate. People sat down for most part of the first hour (before intermission). Standing ovations and applause to Bruce & Mike that felt like they never end after California Girls.

Mikes voice was in excellent condition and so was Bruce. First time in a long while that I've heard Bruce really singing with his full range, capacity and strength! He sang Please Let me Wonder with the original phrasing. Later he was dancing behind his keyboard, made his famous jump and clearly enjoying the show. It was his birthday and he got cake on stage and everybody sang happy birthday.

Also, first time I heard Ike and I must say: I like Ike! He's version of Good To My Baby was A++
Christian sounded nice on Sailor and GOK. I don't really like him on GV or Rhonda though

Minus: I would trade Pisces and All the love in Paris for songs from the BB-catalog.
Highlight: Mike and Bruce taking turns on Here Today!

Found this on youtube a while back.

The infamous Beach Boys "Love You" bass synth recreated on a Moog Sub 37. Sorry for bad timing playing this song, is just to demonstrate the sound Smiley. Non sure but I think the original one was made with a Moog Taurus.

15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brians caring personality on: May 22, 2019, 11:12:43 PM
Everywhere there is talk about Mikes big ego. It's a big part of the narrative and legacy in the bands history.

But just sake of the argument:
Give me some really good examples of Brian actually caring for someone else post 1965. (Writing lyrics doesn't count)

17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Greg Jacobson - Dennis weed gofer who claimed... on: January 04, 2019, 10:27:42 AM

Just found this in a thread on facebook. Anyone got more details or can shine a light on this??!

Everything else was concocted and just grabbed in our absence. Dennis’s drinking buddy Greg Jacobson (who claimed later to have produced it) was an occasional visitor and weed gofer for Dennis.
