Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Ding Dang

I have a few questions about 'Ding Dang'. Question One: When was the version on 'Love You' recorded? Question Two: Who is that speaking at the beginning just as the drums start playing along with the piano? Question Three: Is that Brian singing the verse before the song fades out? I know Mike sings the verses the first two times but for the third time it doesn't really sound like him.

Personally I think had it come out in '67, it would be a success, only because there was so much buzz surrounding the record and its high importance. I don't think it would top Sgt. Pepper but it would be around the same height of popularity, then again....who knows?

Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The M.I.U. Album

What I find interesting about M.I.U is that its one of those few Beach Boys albums that I immediately enjoyed. I remember hearing Pet Sounds for the first time and did not like it at all, but through time it has become one of my favourite albums. M.I.U. in terms of production is great but in terms of lyrics there are hits and misses. I actually admire the way they have taken harmonies from earlier songs and spliced them with new recordings, call it unoriginal, I call it nostalgic in a way. With 'Kona Coast' the melodies and the old harmony from the song 'Hawaii' go together REALLY well in my opinion. It definately beats 'Keepin The Summer Alive'. I laughed when my mom said "Gee, the 80's sure weren't good to them were they?" This was after she borrowed the album to listen to it.

Mike was a big part of their success. They probably still do put out a great product. The fact is that, if you have only Mike & Bruce.....(especially when Brian & Alan are still around and are prominent touring musicians).....then it's not the Beach Boys. It's.....

I've seen that picture and I'm thinking.....no! Not the Beach Boys, just Mike & Bruce plus a bunch of random guys I could care less about. It's just an example of how self-centred Mike is and that he thinks its HIS band. It's not HIS band. He may be one of the lead singers but there isn't an ounce of genius within this guy. I say....keep the band....'cause they might be good, I dunno.....but don't call them the friggin' Beach Boys, because they are far from even living up to their legacy. If Mike thinks he is the leader, why not just name the group after him and the members. But to call them the Beach Boys is disloyal in so many ways. Damn you, Mike! DAMN YOU!

I'm not sure what to think of Smiley Smile....One thing is for sure...its their most NEATEST album. A couple of things I could do without would be the increasingly higher-pitched harmonies on 'She's Goin' Bald'. The first time I heard it, I didn't know what the hell to do or where the hell this was going for that matter. Another thing I dislike is at the beginning of 'Little Pad', there is laughing over decent backing vocals. Other than those 2 things, I think its a very interesting album and is enjoyable to listen to.
