1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: October 20, 2012, 08:01:27 PM
Okay, since this topic that hit me is rather insignificant and silly, I thought I'd post it here.

I was thinking about the album 'That Lucky Old Sun' the other day, most specifically, the title track reprise just before the song 'Going Home'. For some silly reason I imagined, during the reprise, Brian singing "He's rollin' up to heaven all day!",  then the next song you hear is the dirty version of Ding Dang!  LOL

At first I thought it was Bruce

Man, you gotta be one diehard fan to cover such an unlikely song as 'Meant For You'. A cool cover indeed!
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE Sessions box set! on: July 12, 2011, 08:46:36 AM
For a second, I just imagined hearing the news that the boxset is out now, but when I get to the CD store I see a mostly green box with trees, flowers and bushes and on the front it reads "THE SMILEY SMILE SESSIONS".

I'd be like  Angry RRRRRRRRRRR (this goes on for a minute and 45 seconds, the cashier and everyone else in the store stares at me, slightly freaked out, the cashier just getting ready to pick up the phone..)

And then I'd be like  Undecided Welllllllllllllllll.....if I must! Oh what the hell, I'll take it!

(Honestly, I'm still not sure exactly what my reaction would be...but as much as it would be a EXTREME disappointment, meh..I'd still get it)

As tempted as I would be to pre-order from Amazon, I'm in the same camp as the previous poster who worried about receiving it on time.  With my luck, that would be the one time where Amazon takes 2-3 weeks to get it to me, and in a chewed up condition which means I'll get to send it back for a replacement.  I'm looking at you, Miles Davis Complete Columbia Collection...

Thankfully, I have a local record store which I think I can count on.   And there's always Amoeba in Hollywood.

At one time I'd have just gone to Best Buy, but I can almost predict how the exchange will go:

Me:  So, I'm looking for SMiLE by the Beach Boys, but I can't find it anywhere on the shelf.

BB Employee:  Uh, you're looking to smile?

Me: No, I'm looking for a copy of SMiLE by the Beach Boys.

BB Employee:  Uh, I don't understand what you're looking for.

Me: (more frustrated)  I'm looking for a copy of the album "SMiLE" by the group, "The Beach Boys."  Today is the release date.  Do you have it?

BB Employee:  Uh, who are the Beach Boys?  Wait a minute, didn't they do like, that song Kokomo?  Why would you want an album by them?

Me:  (ready to kill said employee) It's actually a box set.

BB Employee:  So you're looking for a box set of Kokomo songs?

Me:  Look, do you have it or not?

Employee furiously tries looking in the computer.

BB Employee:  Uh, I guess you're right...Today is the release date.  But we don't have any.   Why don't you just go to I-tunes and download it?  Nobody listens to CD's anymore.

Oh, so it's not just my local Best Buy where the employees seem to be clueless?  Sheesh, I can just imagine what would happen if I tried to score a boxed set there:

Me: Ok, one more time.....it's the Beach Boys SMiLE sessions boxed set [I'm speaking very slowly here.  I have to.]  It contains the music on both cds and vinyl.

BB: Oh, vinyl?  Like in vinyl siding?  You need to go down to Home Depot then.

Me: No, dipstick, I'm talking about Lps.  Lps!!!!

BB: Oh, you mean like L.P. siding?  That pressboard stuff?  That would be Home Depot again.

Me:  Why do you work HERE and not at HOME DEPOT?

BB:  I really don't know anything about building materials.  I'm more about music and entertainment.

Me:  **** this!  Why the **** did I ever come in here in the first ****ing place!!!!   ****! ****!!!!! ****!!!!!!!!!!

sockittome, keep up the good work! There should be a separate thread for these gags.  Cheesy
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Smiley Sam's Animated Shorts on: September 12, 2010, 10:49:23 AM
Hey there folks! I haven't been visiting the board all that much lately because, as a Digital Animation student beginning his second year of studies, I thought I would do some practise lipsync animation with my original comicstrip characters George & Bob. I've animated two shorts consisting of the duo (they are about a minute and a half long) and I thought I would post the links to those shorts for anybody who would like to see them. And since animation is completely off-topic when compared to everything else on the message boards, I thought the best idea would be to post them here. So here are the links:

George: Episode 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3xIwGJfMOQ

George: Episode 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh1ocG5dvr8

I also incorporated my own music into the shorts. Anyways...Enjoy!
Tell me what you think about 'em  Smiley

If there are any problems with the links, please let me know and I'll do what I can to fix the situation.

Now THAT.....is a compliment!
9  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Funny Names For Albums on: August 24, 2010, 07:44:13 AM
Here's one:

A band decides after a period that they are changing their style from rock to folk, and as they do so, the title of the next record signals that new direction and also suggests that other great artists take that direction in music as well. The title of the album is called

GO FOLK, YOURSELF
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Smiley Smile on: August 23, 2010, 05:13:30 PM
It's one of those albums that are in desperate need of a good bath in remastering. Same with Wild Honey.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Friends on: August 23, 2010, 05:11:35 PM
I would have a threesome with this album and 'Wild Honey'.  'Smiley Smile' and '20/20' could watch.

LOL I'll invite Sunflower too! But for gosh sakes, don't even think of inviting 15 Big Ones. He's such a buzz-kill
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Wild Honey on: August 23, 2010, 05:08:49 PM

If I could make love to this album, I would.  And my standards in vinyl-copulation are high.

LOL nice!

But make sure to clean up after yourself! Vinyl should always have proper maintenance, almost like a pet.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: August 23, 2010, 09:56:00 AM
Man, it's so quiet. I have to turn it up to top volume just to almost be able to hear it. I wonder who recorded them
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Friends on: August 23, 2010, 09:51:25 AM
Wow! I must be the only person who likes that song (Transcendental Meditation). That's actually one of my favourite songs from the album. I just love Brian's vocal on that one
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Wild Honey on: August 23, 2010, 09:48:10 AM
You know, I've never seen the back cover to the Wild Honey LP! Nor have I seen the inside jacket. Could somebody post them?
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are There Members Here Who... on: August 23, 2010, 07:17:27 AM
Gee I would've been -24 years old so...can't really remember LOL   When SMiLE was actually released, I would've been 13, but at that time I wasn't into The Beach Boys, I was into Ozzy Osbourne. Funny how my tastes went from Pop to Metal and back to Pop again
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian & SMiLE on: August 20, 2010, 07:54:00 AM
For a long time I used to ignore Smiley Smile and would listen to the SMiLE session material, because at that point I was comparing the two, but then recently I had another thought......Smiley is such a unique album and it indeed stands out, because I've never heard any other group who have handled psychedelia the way they had at that time, very stripped down and such. Whenever I hear a psychedelic album, the production is (most of the time) heavy and clean sounding, whereas with Smiley, they take a different route going the opposite direction, creating very light, thin and raw sound (I don't know if 'raw' is the best word), and that, I think, is why the album was hated at the time. Because I don't think many bands had approached psychedelia in that particular direction before, and the record-buying public had probably expected just the same as what they've already heard previously with other acts. The one thing that Smiley and Pet Sounds have in common is the kind of reception from the public the 2 records had received in the beginning. (Though, with Smiley, many of the original opinions still stand). Personally, even though Carl called it a bunt, which I can agree with production-wise, I think it was a foreward move from many other bands, just as SMiLE would have been a foreward move.

Whenever I listen to Smiley Smile nowadays, I don't think about SMiLE, I think of Smiley as a stand alone record that is special because its a unique album in their discography and it was a unique album for those times. Now I don't call it the best 1967 album. Nooo way, but its one of the more unique releases of that year.

I remember listening to Smiley Smile the other day, and when I got to track 6 (Good Vibrations), I suddenly imagined the songs on the album as people, and that Good Vibrations came on and said "Look at me! I'm Good Vibrations!....Wait, who the hell are these guys?"
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: August 18, 2010, 05:49:50 AM
This may have been posted already, but what the heck:

This guy sounds EXACTLY like Brian Wilson....he has a slew of great covers.

I honestly thought you guys were kidding! Holy She-it! Immaculate
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Mythbusters on: August 17, 2010, 07:54:34 PM
I agree with how you say that Sgt. Pepper was straight-laced 'cause, when you think about it, it was. It's not that much of a forward move from Revolver, but thats just my opinion.

Having read about what songs Dennis played drums on, it leads me to a question: Did Denny ever play drums on any of the sessions for SMiLE? Or was Hal Blaine the main man for those sessions?......oh....wait a minute.........they were touring at the time....so..........crap! That was kind of a dumb question.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: August 17, 2010, 07:03:53 PM
This is off-topic, but I had this thought in my head the other day while mowing the grass....

What would a Brian Wilson solo album from 1970 sound like?

hmmmmm........
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brian's Eyes on: March 12, 2010, 08:17:47 AM
I heard something about how he had minor surgery or somethin' around the eyes back in the eighties. My question is why? Was there something wrong?
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower Is 40 Years Old on: March 01, 2010, 07:34:21 PM
I remember hearing Sunflower for the first time. It was paired together with Surf's Up, and I borrowed the cd from the local public library. Before hearing it I remember thinking how its probably going to be more-or-less a nostalgic corny pop album(then again, back then I've only ever heard the hits). But when I heard the opening chords of 'Slip On Through' and then Dennis' vocal, I was like "WHOAH!" I was totally stunned and shocked about the record, and then listening to 'Surf's Up' after  made it all the more surprising because of how much they'd grown artistically. Back then, I've only heard everything up to the Pet Sounds album so thats what made it a shock for me. To me, this album is their best TEAM effort.
In my mind, Pet Sounds was Brian's masterpiece, but Sunflower was The Beach Boys' masterpiece as a whole.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: November 02, 2009, 05:44:35 PM
The acting is just AWWWFUL. But it sure is funny. I never knew a biopic had even existed of them. At 1:15, does that guy ever look like Mike there. It seems like they're making fun of Brian's breakdown. Did he really act out that much in reality on that plane?
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Just An Imitation on: November 01, 2009, 05:52:18 PM
Does anyone know the lyrics to that song? I know it was written after Murry died. Was the song even finished, and is there a recording of it anywhere?
