These tracks are both real stonkers! Wonderfully written...

I have a soft spot for 15BO, I agree with the earlier sentiments that the more 'Wall of sound' pieces are the more successful. JOIML is the best track on here I think, but I also love 'In the still of the night', both of which have the great Arp synth on it. If they had held on a little longer they could have put on Brians excellent 'you've lost that loving feeling' as that would give the album some extra weight. 'Palisades Park' is good too. Another great wall of sound track from this time is Springs 'It's like Heaven' which given some Beach Boys vocals could have sit nicely on here.
That said, I find 'Blueberry hill' and 'Rock and Roll music' quite hideous.

If Pete had mainly focused on making a solid Lifehouse double album and then relegated his flights of fancy ideas to an accopanying film it would have been achievable.

I've made a Lifehouse playlist using Pete's early 70's demos. I avoided the late 70's demos included in the bloated Lifehouse demos box set.

Pure and Easy/ Baba O'Riley/ Goin' Mobile/ Bargain/ Getting in Tune/ Greyhound Girl/ Mary/
Love Ain't for Keepin'/ Behind Blue Eyes/ Too Much of Anything/ Let's See Action/ Meher Baba M3 (early 70's keyboard instrumental from Psychoderelict Music Only Edition) The Relay/ Join Together/ Teenage Wasteland (variation on Baba O'Riley)/ Won't Get Fooled Again/ The Song is Over

The Townsend demos of this are brilliant, he is very underrated as a multi-instrumentalist

Hello
I have a new song up on my myspace and Facebook page, it's called 'Let me impress you' and is off my forthcoming 'work' themed album. It's quite poppy with lots of harmonies in it, please have a listen if you have a minute or two...
Cheers
Matt

Well done, having heard your music before it is certainly very good stuff!

Nice stuff, I particularly like Country life, good production on it too. Will listen closer...
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's shouty vocals on: September 19, 2010, 02:52:09 PM
This may be what I refer to as his "Ozzy" voice.  See also "Fantasy Is Reality/Bells Of Madness".  It's a strangely brassy, shrill sort of sound that he'd never really had before.

I've always heard a lot of similarity between Ozzys current voice and Brians current voice (or certainly his 80s/90s voice), very similar timbre and tone and times - sadly Ozzys voice is pretty much defined by autotune these days. I'm a massive 70s Sabbath fan and Ozzys vocals on those first 8 albums are fantastic. As another voice connection I always thought Ozzys and Roy Woods voice were very similar...

I very much enjoyed the song, the melody and certainly the jaunty groove. I think to second some of the other comments I am not a fan of tribute lyrics as such and the lyrics do the song a disservice as many would write it off (as a novelty) though that would be bad as the rest of the song is good. I think with new lyrics over the same melody it would be a real winner - the girl singing it has a wonderful voice!

I did enjoy this, it certainly gets that 70s vibe - 15 Big ones sort of time comes to mind particularly 'Just once in my life' comes to mind, I think the ARP synth instantly brings to mind that song and album (I love the ARP). Anyway, enjoyable stuff, I sent you a friend request on there too (The Brigadier)
38  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: New: Marianne, Are You Listening? on: September 04, 2010, 04:13:12 AM
I quite like this one - the fuzzbass reminds me of the tone on Lou Reeds 'Berlin' - I like the verses bit with the up and down piano which really reminds me of some early Genesis (which I know you're not a fan of...). Anyway the song is good, though again like 'No romance' which i've just listened to as well it's got an unsettling edge.
39  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: New: No Romance on: September 04, 2010, 04:09:02 AM
It's very pretty but definitely has a negative edge in it too which makes it sort of unpalatable but still enjoyable. The little piano frills added to this nice/not nice flavour. I liked the groove but perhaps found the drums a bit clunky, maybe a lighter sound or percussion might help it - but then again I like the awkwardness and it's nice when the extra percussion comes in anyway.

I think Jellyfish at one point was suppose to do stuff with him too, but that didn't work out either.
He did some work with one of those guys. Manning? I forget whom. Probably something that ended up on a Ringo Starr album or something...

The song Manning and Brian worked on ended up as 'Wish it would rain' on Mannings first album, read about it here under July 1993;

I remember when that article appeared in Uncut in the summer of 1998, it was really exciting to read as I thought 'Cool, maybe there's a good album in here somewhere' but then it went on to explain about Imagination and all that. I was a big Llamas fan at the time too so it was extra disappointing. I did manage to obtain the Paley stuff a couple of years later and they were very wrong not to have released it IMO.
42  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VH1 s**ts on The Beach Boys on: August 28, 2010, 02:26:25 AM
Oasis and Nirvana are great bands. Sad that so many here are too cool for them or wouldn't give them a chance outside of hearing two of their singles.

I don't think 'too cool' has anything to do with it. I like Nirvana and learnt to play guitar listening to them, cant say I listen to them much now but have nothing against them.
However, as far as Oasis goes I heard all their albums as my friends were into them, I just thought they were bloody awful at a time when pop music was getting exciting and interesting again what with Blur, Suede, Pulp etc getting into the mainstream and the charts. It seems that as soon as Oasis turned up it was like dumbing it all down again, and the bands that came in their wake were monstrous.
Part of their unappeal also came from the utter tosh that dribbled out of the Gallagher brothers - for a band so obviously influenced by the Beatles, they didn't show anything near the level of melodicity, interesting chord changes, wit, or variety of styles that they did.

I can't speak for those in other countries, but as an Englishman I can tell you that in their home country back in the mid 90's Oasis fever was EVERYWHERE and it was excruciating!! You could not go anywhere without hearing their music. If Liam took a dump the tabloids saw fit to run a frontpage article on it and people up and down the country where copying the Gallagher haircut and spouting the phase "mad for it". Thankfully it subsided when Be Here Now was released to criticism (oddly enough the only Oasis record I quite like some stuff from). Without a doubt the most overrated band of all time.

This hits it on the head, if you're a kid now getting into Oasis without all the baggage etc 15 years on then fair enough, but for us British music fans who didn't like Oasis and were bludgeoned by them and their bullmerda at the time I think it leaves rather a bad taste in the mouth...

I really like the MIU album, and I love 'She's got rhythm' it's sort of wrong and right at the same time.
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VH1 s**ts on The Beach Boys on: August 24, 2010, 12:38:23 PM
Only Oasis qualifies also for such a title.

One of the worst bands of all time...

Hey!! Don't be dissing Oasis...or at least not What's The Story Morning Glory? You can crap the rest of their catalog all you want!! LOL LOL

Now everybody, sing along now! "Sheee's electric. She's in a fam-a-lee full of eccentrics..."

I'll take Led Zeppelin over Oasis anyday..... Wink

I love that George Michaels live version, where Elton comes out on stage and just completely DESTROYS the song (in a good way).  George Michaels sings the first verse, pretty good, then Elton comes out and it sounds like GOD is singing it.  I know a lot of people don't like his 'later' voice, but the thunder he's capable of is just amazing.  It sounds like the stadium is going to crumble or something, just awesome.

LOL great video of it.  'little trip back to 1991.  George looks like Ringo.  Elton looks like he's wearing an Osh Kosh B'Gosh jump suit.

I like the bit best when George says 'Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr Elton John...!'
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How the Holland LP stands up in 1973 on: August 24, 2010, 12:23:18 PM
I rarely listen to them anymore but Queen firmly remain in my top 10 all time groups. Their 1973 debut was pretty good and I consider Queen 2 to be a masterpiece, it's one part metal, one part Brian Wilson, set to Tokienish lyrics.

Queen's 80's albums were hideous but even then they always managed to write a couple of good singles for each one and were amazing live.

Queen 2 is indeed a masterpiece IMO, the whole thing is great, the first 3 songs sets it up but it's side two which really shows just how brilliant a writer Freddie was, the whole thing is fucking genius.

I know some people are down on their 80s stuff but there are plenty of gems in there, I think it was a lack of inspiration, indifference, drugs, band infighting, the changing pop scene, technology etc which meant they had to change. I think there's a handful of really great songs on each album from Hot Space (really underrated) up through to Innuendo. 1989s The Miracle I think is their weakest album but there's still some fun bits on it.

It's not that bad a ranking, usually in a lot of these lists the BBs are missed out altogether.
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How the Holland LP stands up in 1973 on: August 24, 2010, 08:37:04 AM
(...)though I find Queens 80s work a lot more palatable than Genesis'!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Genesis continued to be great up thru Genesis in '83.  Invisible Touch in '86 had some okay moments, but was a little obvious and massively overexposed.

The real career killer (imo) was We Can't Dance in '91.

Oh yeah I actually quite like Invisible Touch as it was the first Genesis album I ever heard when I was very little - it's a great 80s pop album - to me WCD as you rightly point out is the low point.

I hear the true reason Gabriel bailed was because tickets weren't selling at all well.

Let's hope that inspires him to move towards the early Genesis reunion...
