26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your Significant Others on: September 26, 2014, 12:02:31 PM
1. What do your significant others think of your BB obsession?     My wife is fine with it, and to a lesser extent shares it.

2. Do they dig the BB?     Yes, I turned her on to them.

3. Do they now hate the BB because of your obsession?       Nope.

4. If they dig, what album do they like best?      Pet Sounds.  Other non-PS tunes she loves include "Vega-Tables," "Til I Die," and "Heroes and Villains."
She loves the "crazy" BW stuff and thinks "Drip Drop" is the greatest recording in the history of mankind (next to the video version of "I'm Bugged At My Old Man" where BW goes into a coughing fit).

We went to see the 50th reunion show together when the BBs came to DFW.  We were pretty much the only two people in the center lower balcony to stand up for the duration of H&V.  If you happened to see us, hello!

Here's a cover of Good Vibrations that you may not have heard, created in the mid-80s by Genesis P-Orridge with his kooky band/cult/pals Psychic TV.  Hope you enjoy!

It sure looks like the title 'No Pier Pressure' could be the real deal.
It definitely is.

Oh buoy!
29  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's musical quotes on: September 19, 2014, 11:21:56 AM
There are similarities but that has to do with the fact that the musical context is terribly simple for many of these examples, not that there was a conscious effort to reference anything

It's true that I doubt Paul and Gene were listening to Smiley Smile when Paul suddenly lifted the needle and exclaimed, "that spooky shape in the bass and harmony vox would make a great melody for a disco track!"  LOL

Not to go off topic, but Kiss borrowed the Bicycle Rider motif on "I Was Made For Loving You."
Most of the posters in this thread really need to learn how music scales and intervals work.

I assume this means you don't hear the similarity?

I'd like him to do something off McCartney II in full Love You mode. Not going to happen of course.
TEMPORARY SECRETARY

Would effing love this.

"...some pundits are already predicting it could be his next masterpiece.  Wilson said he wrote the songs and then found the artists that could perform them best.  'We lined up a few guest artists,' he said. 'We looked them up and checked them out and they checked out good.'...He considered using a recording he and Beck did of the Irish ballad, 'Danny Boy,' but, 'We didn't put it in the album. It just didn't fit the album very well.' Asked when the other material he recorded with Beck will be released, he said, 'Not soon.'"

This part brings out the cynic in me.

Didn't Brian specifically want to work with Beck?  Now apparently all of that work has gone out the window.  Meanwhile, "we" decided that a trio of hot young chicks "checked out good" and will appear on the album...at least two of whom Brian had probably never previously heard of.

Wow! It's actually on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ge-7m2CjGQ4

Worth it just to watch Shatner dance to "Barbara Ann"...

Priceless!

Because one exclamation point wasn't enough:

"Cast member John Stamos is reportedly at the head of the idea, along with original series creator Jeff Franklin and executive producer Bob Boyett."

As far as we know, the last full show that all six played was August 3rd 1983 at Pacific Amphitheater, Costa Mesa CA. Thereafter either Brian, Dennis or more often both were absent.

Thanks, AGD!

I think we sometimes forget that if any two of us on this board worked in the same office, we'd probably be best office pals.

Absolutely.

Thanks, beacharg!  That's a great clip!  I think you're right about Knebworth being the last show in the UK, at least.

Love it!  Mike kicks ass on this!

Was Knebworth 80 the very last show to feature all three of the Wilsons?  If not, what show was?
42  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your Second Favorite Band Next to the Beachboys on: August 19, 2014, 08:50:04 PM
Yes (Close To The Edge era) and The Beach Boys are probably about tied in my book.  After that, it's: Harry Nilsson, Todd Rundgren, The Pretty Things, Roxy Music, Eno, Bowie, Genesis, Os Mutantes, Burt Bacharach, The Who, The Millennium, The Band, and pretty much everything Motown.

The "broadway" comment seems pretty clueless, though I enjoyed the Fitzcarraldo reference.

I bought a few soon after he started making them (two for me, one for the wife), and I wear mine all the time.  Only one person has ever caught the reference...it was an instant bonding moment.  Grin

Personally, I think that if Landy told him he was pro-choice, he was pro-choice.

Stumbled upon this (virtually unwatchable) live video on youtube today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBTg1AkRl9M

Apparently Brian performed at a pro choice rally in 1989!  This may be old news to some of you, but it's news to me!  If I understand correctly, this was towards the end of his association with Landy.  Here's a picture from the event:
